How To Build Horse Jump Standards...Building A Set Of Jumps Series

Hi everyone!
So this is the second part of my series on how to build a set of horse jumps. I will show you how you can build a complete set of jumps that would cost you over $2000.00 if you were to buy them online, but you can build the same set for about $300.00, or less if you are thrifty!
This time I am going to show you step by step how I build schooling standards from getting the wood until the standards are completed and ready to be used.

Try setting up a stop block 16 inches from the blade, then you won’t waist time measuring and marking all that lumber. Fast repeatable cuts

Any timber that is going to be in contact with the ground should be pressure treated so they don’t rot really quickly

Nice video. Don't understand why you skipped the step of attaching the base. Anyone can drill a hole or spread caulk. I'd have liked to see how you squared flat boards on round edges.

What jump cups do u use

I found the most affordable jump cups at horse.com at around $4.50 a pair. They work pretty well. But my favorite jump cups are the Dapple Equine one handed cups. They are fantastic, strong, and last forever. Sometimes you can find them on Amazon for around $11.00 a pair! But usually they are around $25.00 a pair. So pretty expensive.

My wife and I are about to build some standards this weekend. Thank you for making this video. I do have one question. Did you choose to use landscaping timbers vs. a 4x4s to save $$$ or do you just prefer the timbers instead? We bought 4x4s. Your jumps look awesome! I'm a newbie at building jumps and need all the help I can get! and Thank you!

Hi Layron! Congrats on taking the first step to making some jumps!!!! That is so exciting!!!! I like to use the landscaping timbers mainly due to cost, secondly due to weight. I have found the landscaping timbers to be lighter, and easier for me to move around, but ultimately it is the cost :) The conventional jump cups fit better on the 4 x 4 standards too But when you think about it, even by using the 4 x 4 wood, you will be able to create some great jump standards for a fraction of the cost of buying a set ready made. So you are a winner either way in my opinion :) Happy jump building!!!

what brand of oil based paint are you using and where can I buy it.

I use Rust-Oleum paint, and I get it at Home Depot. They have the best prices. The blue that I used in this video I bought at Big R (it's like a tractor supply store) and it was called Ford blue. It was more expensive than my usual, but it was wort it because I got the color I wanted :) I didn't like the blue Rust-Oleum has (it's called sail blue). I have also bought different colors I couldn't make at Sherwin Williams, but that was REALLY expensive, like $22.00 for a quart of paint.
