Clever adding the 4x4's in the corners. Great idea. Yes, you are correct in that the wood will split or bow as time goes by. One thing I would say is be sure to use EXTERIOR grade screws so they do not rust.

For those worrying about using pressure-treated lumber with growing veggies, you can staple poly cloth all around the box (not the bottom) to help keep any possible chemicals away from the plants. It's great for keeping moisture away from the wood as well for even more longevity.

I tried box bed gardening. 4 x 4, and 4 x 8. Overall it worked well. Control of the soil - low weed infestation - set pathways - fairly easy harvest. I need to suggest, however, that older gardeners will have a greater appreciation of 2 foot widths. That's what I learned that summer.

To save money…go to Lowes or Home Depot and go to the aisle that has bagged cement mix and you can find vinyl boxes for mixing the cement in. They come in 6”, 8” and I can’t remember if they come deeper or not. Anyway, after you purchase the depth you need for your garden, before planting, drill holes in the bottom in random places for drainage. Then add newspapers or whatever over the bottom and fill with your planting mixture. There are a lot of things you can grow in a 6-8” depth container. Before my raised bed was built, I used these for herbs, strawberries, leaf lettuce. The boxes were resting on pretty much just a frame. We also made a PVC frame over the boxes for netting so the birds would not eat up all the strawberries. Another tip, buy a soaker hose and wind it in between your new plants. Then you can water in a very short time, with the water going directly to the roots. Be careful not to overwater. I used the boxes for years for my summer garden, and I still have them. They will last a very long time.

I love these! I am slowly getting rid of my front lawn and turning it into garden. back yard is too shady and some of these boxes would look really nice. right now I have an intentionally messy foundation planting that is soon to be registered as a monarch habitat, the boxes would provide the nice tended look that the neighbors would prefer. win-win.

hi hollis i have a raised beds this my sound crazy but they are 3ft high and all are lined with old disused compost bag cheaper that way. you see Hollis i suffer with knee problems i've had both my knee joints replaced i cannot kneel at all Surgeon said no kneeling ! or you'll be back for further surgery so come winter we go down to Arizona to my wife Pauline`s cousin they live near to Tombstone on the edge of the desert does the old knees a power of good Hollis some days in the cold i go through hell with the pain but must go on with gods help and my Pauline your videos too Hollis you and Nancy are sent from heaven Ed

Just a thought when building with wood for an ex cabinet maker. Use tightbond wood glue between your pieces of wood. The only thing the screws are for then is to hold it together while it dries. the glue bonds tight often tighter than the natural fibers of the board. then you wont have to worry about it falling apart as fast.

I dont know. Gardening is something new to me. Woodworking is not. I dont believe titebond is toxic. the titebond III is rated for outdoor so it shouldnt break down. I dont even know where to look to find out if the soil could absorb the chemicals.

Hi Hollis & Nancy! I just love your videos, & especially how you thank God & give Him all the glory! I have been healed of colon cancer 2 years - thank You, Jesus! I didn't do a garden this year because since I was sick so many things have gone into disrepair around here, & I want catching up, so something had to give. My garden is full of weeds taller than me now! 😣 I think I'm going to spray them with green gobbler vinegar & burn them off once they are dried & then till it in before winter. Does that sound OK? I'm currently watching you build raised beds because here in NH we grow rocks, & I've tried both earth & raised... I think I'm going to build some raised around the earth to have the best of both & my good soil in the middle won't wash away in the heavy rain :) I'm so thankful you share your knowledge & experience with others. I agree the corners should be attached to a meatier piece of wood as the in-between. The other way you described as bad is true, the ends are where the wood will get weak and rot years earlier than the rest, so they won't get the value out of the wood, and will have to re-do almost right away.

+Jimmie Thomas By focusing on the fall you are now ahead of the curve and can really do a good job with your soil. Add plenty of peat, compost and Black Kow. Till in some leaves. Your soil will be really healthy and rich for fall. Use this time to set up your irrigation system. Build some grow tables for your containers and any other racks, processing Station, etc

Hello - I used 1/3 each of black cow, peat moss, top soil in a raised bed for vegetable garden and was wondering if you think that is enough nutrients or think I should add some other fertilizer. FYI - thank you for bringing the Lord into what you do.

I use the same combination, with a half-part each of perlite and vermiculite, and I don't believe the nutrition is there. To get things going, while I'm waiting on the compost pile to do it's thing, I like to throw in some Jobe's organic fertilizer when I'm filling the containers, and if I can I add some Dr Earth's worm castings because the enzymes and bacterial profile is essential for healthy growth. Nutrients are important but it's actually the bacteria and fungi that get the nutrients into the plants, so don't forget to incorporate them! Oh, and also maybe toss in a bit of lime to balance the acidity of all peat moss. You're off to a good start! Good luck!

My husband built me a raised bed some years ago. He used 1” x 6” pressure treated boards for the sides and bottom. For the corners, he used 4” x 4” pressure treated posts. Your corners and ours are pretty much made the same way. Leaving the corner posts’ tops uncovered was a really bad idea. All 4 corners posts have rotted at the tops. Now I realize what we should have done. We are getting ready to replace all 4 corner posts and this time we are buying plastic caps for them. If we were more experienced at building, we would have caught our mistake. We are getting ready to cut new posts and this time we will put a plastic cap on each one at a cost of only $2.38 each. Also, I stained our raised bed and that part is holding up real well. He made my bed counter height because bending down is a big deal as I get older. I love your mix for the plants. +ROSE MARY LADINSKY Set the box down on the dirt where you want it and mark the four feet in the dirt. Remove the box and dig holes on the marks with post hole diggers. Place box back in the holes and level it up. All done 👍

Hollis, can you explain the layering of the peat moss, compost, then the manure instead of mixing all 3 together?

When I start my raised bed that much material is too thick and soft for my small cultivator to blend. I leave it in layers and plant the first year. The second year I use my cultivator to blend it and mix it before planting.

I know this is an ooolld video but could you tell me how or where I can get the plans for the two beds next to the one your building now. The one with the trellis and the green buckets. And for manure I have chickens and the manure has been sitting for about 6 months. Good to go? I love your videos and I'm getting some good ideas. I'm moving to Connecticut next year and I'm going to be doing half earth garden and half raised beds. I will have 6 4x8 raised beds. How many bags of Miracle Gro Really Good Compost did you use? Thank you so much for watching! So glad our videos have helped you. Best of luck to you with your new garden👍👍. Mix three equal parts of peat, compost and Black Kow. Add to the raised bed until you are about 3 inches below the top edge. For Connecticut I recommend a 12” raised bed

I live in an rv park. I want a raised bed, but if I'm not here in six months I want to take it with me. Have you ever built something smaller, on a wheel base maybe, that I can load onto a trailer and move from one location to the next? Thoughts? Just found your channel, loving it.

It's our journey I'd say go with the same concept. Measure the width so that itll fit in the bed of your truck, Maybe make the bed taller for proper room for root growth and screw a sheet of plywood to the bottom as the base so your soil will stay in the bed while being moved. Screw a heavy duty hook or ring to one end and winch it, or use ratchet straps to pull it into the bed of your truck. Maybe use 4 wheeler ramps to get it in there right.
