Meet Martin Royds, an inspirational regenerative #farmer from #braidwood on Jillamatong, who through a complete mindset shift has increased #biodiversity and #productivity resulting in increased #resilience
As a fifth-generation farmer, Martin began farming using conventional practices. He also became a contract sprayer. The excessive use of herbicides and insecticides poisoned him. Around the same time, he realised that his farming practices were not economically or environmentally sustainable. This launched him into a #regenerativefarming journey
Martin now applies #holisticmanagement and an understanding of how the #australian landscape works to slow water down, retain fertility and store them both in his farm landscape. He prevents moisture draining from his #landscape through the installation of leaky weirs and contour banks that stop erosion and spread water out. He recycles nutrients through innovative dam design and employing stock to transfer fertility uphill. His implementation of these principles has improved his farm’s soil health, water-holding capacity and #pasture diversity - all while restoring natural processes and decreasing the impact of climate extremes.
During the bushfires Martin was the only farm with water. He provide water access to the firefighting helicopters to put out the fires from his weir.

So fabulous to see farmers acknowledging weather change and changing practice. So much pride and excitement in his demeanour. Well done. The world needs more farmers with your lateral thinking and care for our planet, whilst earning a quid.❤

Nicely done. I would like to comment that tall trees with an open canopy are ideal so the light still gets through, and the shade moves with the sun forcing the stock to move so no one area gets super tramped, and over fertilized by manure. Also the right amount of shade for the size of the herd to spread out the stock, and manure as appears to be part of the management here.😀
