IRWINQUICK-GRIPCorner Clamp : amzn.to/30fTpF5
Irwin Medium Duty Clamp: amzn.to/2ITY2Bk
For this project I wanted to keep the build cost below $100 and also ensure you don't need many tools or a truck to build these shelves. Overall I am very happy with the end product and think this project is approachable even with a very small amount of experience. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments and below are some additional details.
Overall Dimensions
Height = 8 ft
Width = 8 ft
Depth = 2 ft
List of Supplies
1) 2x4 boards: 25 total 8 ft long for the following components:
a) 6 for the legs
b) 8 for the sides of the shelves
c) 5 cut into 20 separate 21 in pieces
d) 6 cut into 24 separate 20 in pieces
2) 1/2 inch 4 ft x 8 ft sheets osb: 2 total
- Note these will need to be both cut into 2 ft x 8 ft strips for
the shelf top
3) 2 3/4 inch general construction screws
- I used 2 3/4 in but 2 1/2 in would work and are usually
much easier to find
Example: homedepot.sjv.io/2L9dQ
Tools Used
1) Irwin Medium Duty Clamp: amzn.to/2ITY2Bk
2) Makita 18V combo drill kit: amzn.to/2Jsw78j
3) 9 In torpedo level: amzn.to/30qoQNl
4) IRWINQUICK-GRIPCorner Clamp: amzn.to/3xNo7IU
5) Stanley Tape Measure: amzn.to/2WPzr5K
6) 1/8 In drill bit: amzn.to/2LH2iDR
7) T25 Drill bit: amzn.to/2LGSF7S
8) Speed square: amzn.to/2XrSC2h
Additional Tools for Weekend Warriors
Dewalt Drill Bit Set: amzn.to/2w0xAA4
Dewalt Screwdriver Bit Set: amzn.to/2UqTvK9

one of the only videos out there even today that show the proper way to support the shelves with jack studs -- and on top of that how to get it cut without owning Festools lol thanks for this wealth of info to us weekend warriors! in case any one else is planning to build a garage storage shelf like this watch the other DIY ones and you will see that MOST ppl only use face on screws to hold up the shelves - will it work sure - will it last maybe - but I sure as hell would sleep better at night knowing it will never collapse and fall onto my car!

Hey Scott: I have followed you for about 2 years now along with other video people with the same subjects that you have and I like your approach best in all categories. I'm not a carpenter or electrician (just a retired aircraft mechanic) but I can tell the difference between a hack and a professional. I have used a few of your videos in my daughters new home and I'm her champion now. I'm also a private person and don't want my computer flooded with emails, bells, whistles or gongs going off faster than I'm able to keep up with them. You have the best shelf designed that I have seen, step by step you are exactly what I have been looking for... my first shelf built I started with a strip across and screwing it into the wall and add more on the side so the shelf would sit on top, after building one shelf I didn't like it because I had drill holes into my wall so I stop the project and decided to find another method than I saw your channel.... I loved how you presented the information, it makes more sense than having to drill holes into my wall....

Great video. One of the better shelf designs on KZbin. I’m thinking about not building the center vertical supports though. I’ll probably attach the tops though to the floor joists above. Scott, i am happy to report that i finished building my shelving 8 ft by 8ft by 2 ft yesterday and I could not be more pleased. it is super solid and I am proud of it. it took me about 4.5 hours overall so I was considerably slow but the speed didn't matter to me. i took my time building it. i also had to cut pieces myself because after I loaded the wood in the cart, lowe's saw was not functioning yesterday. i just love it and I can see the potential for things to come with it. you are a huge inspiration for it. i am dropping back again to say a big thank you.

Great video, and I'd want to add that your 3" deck screw only has about 100lb shear strength, so I'd double them up. I realize they're not support in your video, but if you get enough weight on there, and it starts raking from earthquake, or what have you, things can go pear shaped pretty quick. The reinforcement is crucial! Thanks. In my previous home, the previous homeowners built some shelves similar to this, except there was no reinforcement. Overtime the thing was falling apart. It took me more time to reinforce them than ripping them out and rebuilding new ones. Now I need a shelf like this for my new home. Great tutorial, thank you! Made all the necessary adjustments for my shelves, went to Home Depot optimistic. The prices are over the roof, $10 for a 2x4, $40-$50 for one sheet of plywood. So the total cost will be way over $300. Idk if it's just the HD in my area but it's not worth it when a steel shelving is $300.

Hey Dengriff, depending on how much you are planning on loading up the shelves you would probably be okay without the middle support. If you do test it without the middle support and could report back your findings that would be Awesome!

Scott this looks amazing! I’m wanting to do this for storage bins. Could the leg posts be side mounted instead of front? This would put the uneven dead space gap on the exterior rather than on the shelf space itself.

I bought wood at two different locations: Home Depot and Lowes: #1...I went to HD and the cost was $175; it was $150 at Lowes. #2...at HD, I checked the 1st cuts(20"/21") and they were good, but many future cuts were off (I had to re-cut). #3...at Lowes, they charge $.25 per cut and I checked the 1st cuts again and they also made many wrong cuts. NOTE: The wrong cuts were due to the stop moving or sloppy alignment, plus the workers were not that into this. DEFINITELY do the cuts yourself and save the hassle. That is my take.

Thanks for the information and feedback Bill. I actually agree, if you have the power tools and vehicle to carry the uncut material doing the cuts yourself is best. Best of luck on the project.

One caveat that you should add: Before you go to the trouble of pulling all your lumber, first go and check that the panel saw and radial arm saw at your Home Depot or Lowes are both actually working! You may have to go to another nearby store. Also, I think it's worth the extra money to buy Douglas fir prime grade 2 x 4s, which tend to have fewer defects, twisting, and warping than lesser quality 2 x 4s. I recently built three very similar six foot tall, eight foot wide, two foot deep two shelf units for our storage unit at a total cost of about $120 per unit (including fastening hardware). I wanted the ability to assemble and disassemble them on site without the need for power tools, so I used 1/4 inch hex bolts instead of screws to attach the uprights to the shelves. I pre-assembled the shelves with screws and pre-drilled holes for the hex bolts. The shelves and uprights were made of 1/2 inch OSB and 2 x 4s, but I saved a few bucks by using 2 x 3s for the shelf cross braces and vertical supports. The thing is like a rock! Each unit breaks down into two shelves, four uprights, and a U shaped base plate made of 2 x 3s so I can store heavy items on moving dollies underneath the first shelf.

Hi, I have two questions: 1) for the legs, do they have to be pressure treated since it touches the basement floor? 2) how would you anchor this to the concrete wall?
@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Wonbo 1) I think it would be a good idea to make the legs out of pressure treated especially if your basement is humid/damp. 2) I just used metal strap like this amzn.to/34gAX2n and attached 1 to each end and then to the floor trusses. Best of luck on the project!
@WonboShim
@WonboShim 4 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Thank you! So for number 2, that essentially anchors the shelf to the trusses, instead of the wall right?
@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, if you secure the strap (from the truss) such when the shelf just starts to tip then the strap pulls tight that will be enough to keep the shelf from tipping.

First off... That's not "Plywood", it is O.S.B.! Oriented Strand Board! There is a difference! Second, I have found that having the lumber pre-cut does save time, but you need to observe the employee doing the cuts. Some of these persons don't do their best to get the dimensions right. Thirdly, you as the designer need to get your dimensions down perfectly right, else wise you'll get to make the adjustments yourself. And you'll be lucky if the dimension is just too long. Too short means going back to the store for another piece of lumber.

I JUST finished building this in my garage, and MAAAAAAAAAAAN, this thing is solid and sturdy. I can tell this thing is going to stand the test of time. The only change I made was turning the 3rd shelf into the top shelf. After putting the plyboard up, I screwed into the support under it, then sawed off the ends of the 8' legs so it's 6' tall now.

Thanks for the tutorial, just finished mine. 6ft wide by 5'6" tall, so I skipped out on the middle verticals. I also used left over screws and sheet materials from other projects, so I had to counter sink some shorter screws until they gripped. My lowest shelf is sturdy plywood, and the uppers are slightly weaker MDF, yet it is taking the weight fine.

Did this in the UK, measurements were a bit different because of it being metric here, the 2x4s are slightly shorter than 8FT, took me a while to realise because I had got limited space for it too 🤣 also had to adjust the height because my garage roof is sloped, I would definitely recommend those corner clamps after building it without them, would have been a lot easier!

Hey Rose, glad the video helped you out. Just a reminder that it is good to add a "anti-tip" strap to the shelf once completed. If it is in your basement you could connect the strap between the top of the shelving unit and the floor joists. That way if someone (usually kids) jump on the shelves there is no chance of tipping over. Best of luck on the project.

Scott - thanks for the video. I built 4 of these, making them 10' tall by 12' long. Bottom shelf at 3'. Next shelf 2' up. Top shelf at top of uprights. Lag screwed them into the 6x6 supports in my shop. Done and solid as a rock. I have 48' of 3-level shelving on a 60' wall with 3' beneath where I can store things that need to be on the floor due to weight. I really like the inside supports in your design that keep the weight off the outside uprights. And your advice about leveling starting with the middle shelf is spot on. Well done!

@@EverydayHomeRepairs its along one long wall of a 30x60 shop. roof is 14' at the eave so I have 4' from the top shelf to the bottom of the truss. I'm going to separate them into pairs so there is a 12' gap in the middle. in the gap, i'm thinking about french cleat and magnetic strip wall for handing all my hand tools (not a fan of tool boxes). If I dont do the tool wall, I have an 8' rolling work bench I'd like to store in that space so its out of the way.
