A lot of people don't realize the floor of the container is water resistant plywood screwed to the robust steel floor frame. Its waterproofed on the bottom but its not designed for the kind of immersion that would occur when placed underground, if improperly installed. Also the roof and walls are thin corrugated sheet, all the containers strength is in the corner pillars and the floor supports. Some consider it a good idea to flip the container upside down for underground storage so the massive weight of a few feet of dirt can be taken up by the strong floor and distributed welll to the pillars. Something is still needed to spread the weight across the roof, and it should be waterproofed. Concrete is generally used but eventually that can crack, additional water proofing and drainage is a good idea. The side walls also need reinforcement to prevent the earth crushing inwards. Masonry walls and excellen6t for this purpose. As a bonus an air gap can be left between that and the wall of the container itself to keep water away andstop rusting and ingress.

You think if one wanted to bury a 40ft container only half way into the ground by about 4 feet, the walls of the container should be fine with basic wooden framing reinforcement? The climate of the container is in a desert like environmental that experiences only a few inches a year and otherwise has dry soil, so I would assume that rust would hardly be an issue

Did you purchase the container from the same company that delivered it to site?
