If I lived in the Northeast I would take a vacation to the South and find a truck, can't remember last time I saw a rusty truck around here. I would never consider buying a truck with rust like that, I understand you don't always have a choice if you lived in the rust belt. Nice video thanks.

Thanks so much! Unfortunately I'm going to be in the market for another truck soon. My F150 has both rocker panels rusted through and it won't pass inspection anymore. Only 142,000 miles and it still runs excellent. Good luck on your truck purchase. I'd be interested in a Tacoma but it won't tow what I would like to buy.

@@AdventuresWithMe00 I FOUND ONE, bought it today, not so much rust, 2003, 83,000 miles, with a cap, had a slight rear ended but nothing bad and fixed, tow thingy too. Muffller pipe rusted in rear but solid. No noise. Love love love it. Took me awhile but found it !!!!! Ford sold it to a dealer and engine is so clean. Bringing it in for muffler and new fluids ... In few months will get new tires, still has good tread but would want a fresh start. Price with extended warranty tax, dealer doc plates registration 6999.00

Your research is flawed. It's the 3v 5.4 that has most of the issues. The 2v's are quite robust and have few problems. The 2v's were produced from 97-03, and the 3v's were from 04-10. Also, the 4.6 is damned near bulletproof.
@AdventuresWithMe00

Thanks for clarifying that Daniel. When I was buying the truck I was looking for something around 10-12 years old and I'd heard that the 5.4 was not good in that generation. But it's an important distinction I didn't know.

I had a 5.4L Triton in an '08 F-150 King Ranch crew cab. It had good power and was very lucky. No problems with the spark plugs blowing out or stripping. But I had the dealer change them. Normally I would do that myself, but the price per plug and dealing with them breaking, stripping and possibly blowing out made it worth the extra labor cost. If anything happened after they were replaced, the dealer guarantees their work and the parts. My next door neighbor had the 4.6L in a tenth generation F-150, single cab with the long bed. Seemed a little under powered. And he was replacing the back cylinder coil pack at least once a year. I suspected it was because he replaced it with a cheaper aftermarket coil pack. And he replaced the plugs, wires, and that pack and the coil pack still went bad in a few months later on the same back cylinder. My brother also had a tenth gen F-150 but the crew cab short box. While trying to replace his own spark plugs, he stripped out a couple of the holes and broke a few plugs in the process. After few choice words, he got it back together and installed a couple heli-coil inserts. But it didn't take long to blow out one of the spark plugs. That was the last time it ran. It was kinda rusty, so he parted it out and junked it. More recently I purchased an '06 Ford F-350 6.0L diesel with the extended cab and regular box. I needed it for hauling stuff. And got a good price on it since it needed a new turbo. And after replacing the turbo, all was well until a year later. It went through all the usual problems, one right after the other... EGR valve, EGR cooler, ICP and IPR sensor failure, a couple bad injectors, and then finally the HPOP failure and oil cooler. Each costing thousands of dollars. I finally had enough and traded it and the '14 F-150 3.5L Ecoboost Platinum crew cab I bought used in late '14 for a brand new '17 F-250 6.2L gasser Platinum crew cab. Best thing I ever did! Never going back to a diesel again. And done with Ford's turbo problems!

You make zero sence. You say you did your research, but bought the truck with the worst reliability issues of the big three. You bought a truck with an engine and trans that is extremely rare.... I work on 2-300 5.4s for every 4.2 I see. The pos you bought has so many known problems I can not believe people buy them. Constant electrical problems, constant failing GEM's, (that are no longer available), constant vaccum hub issues, third brake lights that always leak causing water damage, front axle design that destroys tires no matter how well it is maintained or aligned.... The reasons the f150 is the best selling truck are because they fail to the point of not being worth repairing much sooner then a GM or Dodge, ford gives huge discounts on fleet purchases, and lastly, because ford buyers are brand loyal braindead idiots.... I can not count the number of people I know that have nothing but constant problems with ford junk, but continue to buy more ford junk....it keeps me really busy , I guess thats a good thing.

bdd1469... Fords are only good if you can afford to buy new and replace every 5 years. Otherwise, they are just total shit. Owned several F-250 and F-350 Super Dutys from the early 2000's era. When new I'm sure they were great, but I got 'em when they were 2/3rds shot. (I can't afford new trucks.) Fords have proven to be gigantic rot-boxes and have shit-loads of electrical problems as well. The list goes on and on. Their gasoline V-8 and V-10 engines were moderately reliable, but had their own woes, such as broken exhaust studs, cracked manifolds, bad ignition coils, and more. The diesels were trash unless you had a 7.3L PowerStroke that was well cared for. Ford finally caught up with Chevys shit designs from the 1990's and now produces alternators that fail constantly as well. Idiots! Needless to say, I finally gave up on Ford trucks and don't plan on ever going back to them, unless I have a mental moment some time in the future. (Unlikely.) Dodge (Ram) or Chevy for my HD pickups from now on. People can say what ever they want, but I've been much happier with the Cummins 5.9L powered Gen II Dodge Rams than any other pickup on the market. Dodge V-10's are also a great engine, despite their poor fuel economy.

Ken... Ford trucks have terrible reliability and tremendous rotting issues. What Ford does do right is they have a great marketing campaign, and they know how to sell poor quality trash to the general public. Remember when their slogan was "Quality is Job 1"? I do, and guess what... they haven't used, nor do they dare use, that slogan in nearly two decades now.

AdventureswithMe... because he's a mechanic, just like me. We techs KNOW that Fords are nothing but TRASH, because we see 'em in the shop all the time for a lot of different problems. I've also had the mis-fortune of owning a few of them myself. Nothing but gigantic shit-boxes once they get 5+ years on them and a 75K+ miles on 'em. A former boss of mine has a 2015 F-250 diesel. The bed is already rotting away from the underneath! Remarkable quality fail. He's also had issues with the emissions control garbage and other silly expensive problems. The truck doesn't even see terribly hard use, and moderate towing at best. Fortunately for him, he's wealthy and doesn't hang onto a vehicle very long. He'll sell it before the rot becomes too obvious and the next poor sucker (oops, I mean, owner) will end up with the headache.

Do you have any advice about how to negotiate on a truck? I'm finding many of the trucks in my area seem like they're listed way above KBB value.
@AdventuresWithMe00
@AdventuresWithMe00 7 жыл бұрын
They are expensive. I was taken aback by the prices on used 4wd trucks when I started looking. But new trucks are over $50,000 now. I made a spreadsheet of what used trucks were out there so I could try to compare apples to apples. It made the better deals easier to spot. I would also try to get a handle on how long the trucks have been listed for sale. (Craigslist will often have the number of days the ad has run.) After that all you can do is make an offer. You can bring up KBB value to explain why it's a fair offer.

Okay. Thanks. I'm rethinking owning a truck. I thought it'd be fun to have a smaller one, and I might need it for work once in awhile. But it's not essential. Now that I'm getting a feel for the market, I'm beginning to think it's a little senseless to pay what people are asking for em unless it's going to serve a specific, practical purpose for me.
@AdventuresWithMe00
@AdventuresWithMe00 7 жыл бұрын
I get that. My own story of truck ownership was that I originally was going to buy a Jeep. At 50 years old I never had any interest in owning a pickup. But in researching Jeeps I found that they were also pretty expensive, had big rust problems and were not very reliable. The cargo area is also limited. A truck started to make more sense to me. I needed 4wd because I just moved to a rural area. Once I bought the F150 I found that I used it far more than I thought I would. It's saved me a lot of time and money when I had to haul things. That said, I realized later I could have gotten a Jeep and just bought a trailer when I needed to haul cargo. But I got my truck for $3600, so it was a good deal. Now I don't know if I'll go without owning a truck. On top of the utility they are very fun to drive. I didn't think I'd ever say that.
@jfknospe1
@jfknospe1 7 жыл бұрын
First, be willing to walk away. You'd be surprised how well that helps for negotiating the price. I'll go into a dealer or private owner. Look at the truck and if they don't budge on price, just walk away. If they're too high, the truck won't move. Come back a couple weeks later and the dealer/owner will tend to soften up. If the trucks are selling for that high price in your area, you may need to look outside your area. I've found some great deals 4 to 5 hour drive away or in a neighboring state. Take someone with you just in case you buy. Hopefully, someone that can also be your conscience and willing to let you know if you're getting "emotionally" attached to a truck. Yep, its a bad thing and that's why dealers hand you the keys. Once they have you in the drivers seat, they usually have a sale.

It never let us down in the 105k miles we had it. We live in CA so there’s zero rust. I get 13mpg but I think I got a good truck overall. Only thing I spent on it was new tires and steering stabilizer which I installed myself. I also replaced all the power lock actuators and the rear window struts. I purchased a 2001 Ford F150 4.2 auto 4x4 from a dealership in Florida. it only had 32000 original miles and was supposed to be mint. I had an inspection done on the truck and they said it was ok. I had the truck shipped to California. 6 months later, the frame broke due to rust. I had to have the insurance company total the truck as it cost more to fix it. The body shop found the entire truck was bondo and rust. The ad said original paint, it was not. It turned out the truck was a snow plow in Boston and traded in on a new truck. I contacted the inspection service and they were out of business. So was the dealership. I filed a complaint with the Florida Attorney General, but apparently it's a pretty wide spread thing. 2 years later I still haven't heard anything.

It's cool you made a video advising what to look for in a used truck . First mistake you bought a rusted truck , and always take a scanner and see if there's any codes , and take a look at the o2 sensors and don't be a parts changer..looking at the o2 sensors in closed loop could have shown you the intake leak etc. and saved you from replacing the mass air flow sensor.sure you did not need all those parts replaced at the dealer , they took advantage of the situation..There are plenty of Ford tech guys on how to videos that can advise you on repairs. I am looking for a pick up myself , and although I like Ford pick up trucks it's at the bottom of my list..Ram truck power or Silverado reliability and most likely a Toyota Tacoma or Tundra is the way I'm thinking to go..thanks for the video and sale the Ford , unless you remove the bed and really take care of the frame rust it will never stop eating away at the truck..be safe riding your bike , maybe I'll see on the rode with my bike...

Thanks JOGO, those are great tips. I wish I had known that when I was buying this truck. I think I should recut the video and call it, "Don't make the mistakes I made..." As an update, I've put about 16,000 miles on the truck since I bought it 18 months ago. I've had rust pop through the driver's bed corner and that piece just fell off the truck. I've been able to get a handle on the frame rust by using Fluid Film twice a year. The truck has been running well, but it threw another Check Engine code again. This one is to replace an O2 sensor, which I need to do. I'm still happy with my truck as I got such a good deal on it ($3600), but I would have done it differently if I could do it again. I would recommend a Toyota, but they were out of my price range at the time. Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, everyone is a Toyota-baby. It's unfortunate because Toyota reliability means nothing when you don't have access to quality remanufactured transmissions and engines. Sure, the Toyota may last longer, but once something major needs to be changed, that's it. You have to purchase a new truck, or rely on low quality remanufactured engines and transmissions. The top-quality, most advanced engine and transmission remanufacturers only do domestic parts.

O2 sensors do not indicate 'intake' (vacuum) leaks lmfao. FUEL TRIM, indicates everything. granted the fuel trims come from the O2, your O2 could be biased and/or contaminated, giving it an accurate or completely whacked out reading, as they ONLY sense Oxygen... could be electrical..etc...etc..etc.. I wont keep bashing you but anyway, @Adventureswithme.. did you hear what you said? "I went to AutoZone and the wannabe never-touched-a-car-before Parts sellers gave me the code (and surely their 'pro' diagnostic advice), THEN, you went ONLINE because you believed the information online could solve the problem... .. ... If that was your thought process, what is your thought process as to why the hell Mechanics even have jobs then? If you can go to an OBD2CodeGuide.c0m or whatever, and it gives you a list of 400 things that COULD be the problem, with Top 5 being 'most common'.. when any and everything on that list could have literally nothing to do with the problem.. But lets say for a second the Top 5 actually did (and usually do) give some good insight on where the problem is. If you had a MAF or O2 sensor code, you would (did) jump to replacing the sensor? Didnt check the basics like voltage/Ground connections? i wont say u shouldve pulled out a scope and started viewing waveforms, or put your Multimeter on Frequency and read the Hertz output that should be 3,000 to 7,000 @ idle(If its even a Karmen Vortec/Hot Wire design that outputs Hertz /etc /etc, but what im saying is that i dont understand why there is such a huge misconception about the check engine light AND the morons at Autozone/O Rileys/advance etc.. They are NOT Technicians.. Like everything in life you take any advice with caution, without fully committing until you do your OWN research like you said.. hence the other guys comment as well. Also once the truck warms up, 90% of all intake manifold leaks disapear due to expansion.. so thats out of the bag... BUT thats enough "Constructive Critiquing", as i don't criticize. Just use common sense bro. On a side note, if you have a Code Reader that DOESNT view 'Live Data', Throw it away right now as its utterly useless. Pulling some codes aint jack and this isnt 1991 OBD-1, then u might as well flash the codes yourself & count the blinking light lmao. Learn what Live Data is, study it, know the parameters and what each value SHOULD be, and you'll have more knowlege than 60% of the 'mechanics' around here AND save yourself the headache of jumping on the 'check engine' light. (Best tip of the year : Autel AL319; is 40$, reads live data, fits in your pocket, your welcome) All in all, it was a great video not for the 'tips' or 'advice', but the learning experience you provided to everyone as to why you DONT do any of the things you did, in starting out your Used truck buying experience, as well as any life lessons and/or mistakes you have now corrected along the way. Thanks for your time in making this video and even MORE for reading this 45 Chapter NovelI'm typing up for you lol. Hope the truck is still running well, take care.

I had a new F-150,a 2002. It was a piece of shit. It was in the shop 3 times before it had 22k on it. The slave clutch went out at 53k. Unlike a Chevy the slave clutch is internal. A 20 minute job on a Chevy took about 8 hours on that piece of shit ford. I've had two new fords and both were junk.

That's too bad James. When I was looking I figured there were so many F150's sold every year that there must be something to the reliability. I'm finding out that isn't true. I've got about $4,000 sunk into this 14 year old truck now.

Why haven't you sprayed the bottom with chainsaw chain oil (30% diesel for sprayer) or undercoating?

I used Fluid Film, which seems to work as well. I don't think anything would have made the difference...the rust was pretty advanced when I got the truck. I ended up having to sell it because it wouldn't pass state inspection due to rust.

AdventureswithMe Oh man, the dealer (or whoever you bought that thing from) sure saw you coming. Too bad you didn't know me before buying that money-pit rust-bucket. i could have saved you thousands and many inconvenient failure headaches by talking you out of buying it. It was worth $1,500 to $2,000 max when you bought it, Certainly not $3,750, plus taxes, which means you were just over $4,000 when you brought it home. OUCH! Now you say you have over $6,700 into it? Holy crow man. I honestly feel bad for you bud. You really could have bought a lot better 4x4 truck for that amount of money. All vehicles need service. Don't give us that false B.S. about foreign junk needing no work. That belief is the biggest farce known to man. Oh well, guess we all gotta live and learn in our own ways.

I know, believe me we drool over the vehicles you have in the southwest. I think for the budget I had it would have been a little cost prohibitive to transport a truck across the country, but it's definitely a good option around here. As rusty as my truck is, it's pretty normal for around here. In fact, you don't see as many 10-15 year old trucks around as you would think, because of the rust.

mold man the great Had my F150 for 15 years very minimal work ever needed to be done. Guess what I bought a new F150 because of that dependability. I laugh when I hear about my buddies with their Rams and silverados in and out of the shop. Im not all about one brand being better than another but the chevy's I looked at I just couldn't pull the trigger on.

@@lh98 that's close to being unheard of for a Ford truck. A couple of my friends have f150 and one had to bring his wife suv into work 3x cause his ford.. and other caught a ride with me twice

mold man the great most every vehicle breaks down at some point and I wouldn't believe you if you told me yours never has. They are machines that need maintenance and if ppl fail to do the maintenance things will happen. Small things like starters and alternators are bound to happen at no fault of the vehicle they just get worn. I have a friend that has a Chevy 1500 and the thing broke down so many times he finally got rid of it. Another friend with a gmc (basically same thing) and he's dumped a ton of $ into it. When I was looking for a newer half ton I looked at 2014&15 silverados but they all had rust starting on then frames already this is back a few years so they were essentially new trucks. Went and drove the 15 f150 and bought it. Those chevy's seems like all of them rust way too soon. Friend had a ram too and damn thing rusted like crazy. That was in the shop left and right for tranny issues and was bondo/metal patched a million times. On the other side of that my uncle had an older f150 maybe 2005? And he blew the motor. My guess not doing proper maintenance and probably ran it low on oil but I never did ask. Point is they ALL are going to have an issue at some time so I don't buy the one brand better than others across the board. Although that 99 f150 I had 15 years and only replaced the starter, the battery a couple times 15 years is a lot and batts don't last that long, an alternator once, a serpentine belt, brakes obviously as all vehicles go through them with wear, but nothing major ever and the most costly was the brakes and alternator. I got my money's worth easily on that rig. Wish I would have been undercoating it to prevent rust being in northeast and that was my fault.
@lh98

mold man the great also it's kinda funny because while you were giving rides to friends with fords I was doing the exact opposite using my ford to drive them to get parts and get to work too. One of them bought a ford and hasn't looked back (the Chevy guy) he was just done with Chevy after leaving him stranded so many times. I prefer ford over the others BUT I am certain each brand has good and bad in them.
