Here is how I got my first new mtb in 20 years and 4th in 30 years of riding (been riding a hardtail and full suspension for past 20 years and rode fully rigid steel (kind of think that was the most fun) for first 10 or so years, even did DH on the fully rigid back in the day): I saw the Ibis Mojo 4 in white on the internet back in Dec/Jan. Fell in love, even though it's probably a little more bike than I need for my local trails, it's just too beautiful to pass up. So, I thought I could get one pretty easily. Turns out, my size was sold out everywhere. I ended up sending many, many emails to all the internet sellers, no one had one. Then, I found a place that would order one for me with delivery in Jan/Feb 2022. Almost put down a deposit. In the meantime, I kept scouring the internet. Found a place in Utah (I am in NY) that had some for demo/rental use and I noticed that they occasionally sell their rental bikes. I sent them an email asking if they had a medium white one for sale, and they said yes but that someone else had already expressed interest. I gave up for a while, even sent an email to Ibis, they gave me some places on the East coast to check out, no one had one. Then, after being a bit depressed lol for a couple of weeks, I get an email from the place in Utah. Would you be interested in an SLX build white medium Mojo that has been used for 6 days, but with full Fox Factory suspension and carbon handlebars? Yes, please and thank you, I said. So, got it with upgrades for less than price of new one without upgrades. I will be picking it up at UPS tomorrow (thanks Bikeflights.com) and that's my story. Sometimes patience pays off. Plus, already ordered and received new pedals (on sale) and grips, though considering using my current 20 y.o. speedplay frogs. may get a new saddle and handlebar and, of course, Chris King headset.

PSA:for all you new mountain bikers welcome to the sport!!! I bet you’ll love the sport but one thing PLEASE learn the rules of the trail I have seen new ridders just standing in the middle of single track and the ridders going full speed down that are gonna have to smash on the breaks or fall please have the decency to stand off the trail learn the rules of the trail also be weary of the people around you I was going down single track at full speed and a new ridder decided to hesitate and completely stop in the middle of the track making me have to swerve around them and fall into a dead bush don’t ruin people’s days it’s such a simple rule that’s over looked in non bike park trails I’ve also had a sprained ankle due to a person on a e bike who thought they were the fastest person on the trail passing me without a warning making me smash my ankle on a rock so please PLEASE be nice to the other ridders on the trail I will always welcome new ridders but don’t be over confident if can hurt you and others

So true! I got a bell so that riders can hear my coming and when I was riding down a two way trail every rider I came upon was just sitting in the middle of the trail. I move over to let them by and slow down and yet they won't budge at all and act like I'm doing something wrong yet I know they can hear me before they see me. If everyone does their part then everyone can have fun out shredding.

I agree with the tips for the most part. One thing that can be a bit misleading is the "small stuff" with regard to Carbon frames. One time on my OG Ripley I had what appeared to be a scratch on my downtube, I thought it was the clear coat, after getting a second opinion, everyone ( riding buddies and Ibis included) told me it's a crack, not just a crack, a serious one! I had my local shop send it to their frame repair dude and got it repaired. It wasn't cheap, but it got fixed. If you guys don't have experience with Carbon, would be a good idea to bring someone with you that does when buying used.

I think if you are a complete mountain biking beginer and you have never been on a trail in your life, this is a good video. But if you have ever been on a mountain bike trail I would say to look at what the people around you are riding and ask people if you can try their bikes, mountain bikers are nice people and they usually say yes. I had a buddy that just put a deposit down on a giant stance (which I find bike shops over reccomend) but rented a norco shore for a bike park weekend, you have to pedal and even climb a bit to get to a few of the trails and the dirt is really sandy so its a good test of how a bike pedals. He absolutely loved the shore and is going to buy the rental one at the end of the season. In general, I find bike shops (especially in my area) almost always reccommend short travel trail bikes as they work ok for most people and they dont have to spend much time looking into the clients riding style, which I find very weird because almost every decent rider at my local spot rides bikes with 160 to 170mm of travel. Especially if you ride lesser known or secret trails I would take advice from bike shops with a grain of salt. Some people might also be better served by downcountry bikes if you live somewhere extremely flat, or maybe agressive hardtails if your area doesn't have partricularly rough terrain. but for a complete beginner over the age of 20 I do agree with bike shops and I think that a short travel trail bike is a safe bet.

hey i was looking for some advice. i kinda just got into trails last year and i bought a trek marlin 4 of a mate for 200$ AU. He's rode that thing through hell and back and i feel im having to deal with all the problems. i found out the back axle was bent and it was missing two berings in the read hub. other things like broken teeth on my front caset and a chain that is way to big for the bike giving it lots of slack. i'm really trying to get into this sport but i don't know if i should spend a bunch of money fixing it. or just go for a high level hard tail or a entry level dual suspention bike. i was just wondering if you could give me some suggestions. my budget is 1,700$ to 2,400$ AU. get back to this comment if you can thanks.
