We designed our Tailgate Tuesday series exclusively for the construction industry. We know that OSHA doesn’t always put things in the clearest terms, so we wanted to make it easy to understand for everyone. In this Tailgate-Safety-Topic we talk about the importance of knowing how to calculate fall clearance distance with SRL’s, and why fall protection safety is so important to protect yourself and your workers when working from heights.
We hope this tailgate safety video helps you better understand how to calculate fall clearance distance when using SRL’s. If it did be sure to leave a like, comment to let us know about any other OSHA construction safety videos you would like to see, and subscribe to be notified about our next video to learn some more confined space safety tips!

One more possible scenario. If the worker ties off below their D-ring, free fall would apply. That freefall distance would also have to be added into the fall clearance. For example, if they secured their lanyard at platform level, approximately 5 feet below their D-ring, they would be risking a 5-7'ish FFD. Some SRL's don't permit a FFD but if they do, that could significantly increase the clearance that's needed.

This video is great, but this is a generic way of calculating the distance. But it is always my recommendation to calculate the distance using the specific guidance in the SRL owner’s manual.

So I see on type b soil the first horizontal bench at the bottom looks to be doubled. Why is that a 8’ horizontal bench?

why dont we include the height of the worker like we do for 6' lanyard?
