How to Calculate Reverberation Time in a Room - Acoustic Absorption Explained

In the first video of our series, we go over the meaning of acoustical absorption and how it relates to the different finishes (drywall, tile flooring, ACT, etc.) in a space. We'll also explain how to calculate Reverberation Time, or RT60, in a room. This formula takes into account the size of a room, and the finishes in a room along with the Noise Reduction Coefficient, or NRC, of each finish. The NRC of a material tells you the percentage of sound that it absorbs. As we explain in the video, the RT60 in a room is the amount of time it takes from an impulse noise (such as a clap) to when the sound level goes back to ambient.

What does ACT mean??? Acoustic tile? Great video! Finally someone who shows the math behind acoustic absorption but make sure you don't make us fill in the blanks. Don't assume everyone knows every acronym ever created by man. Thanks!!

For your third example (3:46), aren't the sabins 360? You have 480 resulting in a .81 RT60, but I get 360 resulting in a 1.11 RT60. 8000 = 20 = 22.22 X .05 = 1.11 second 360 9 Am I off? SA = walls 1600 sq ft at .1 (40) + ceiling 400 sq ft at .4 (160) + floor 400 sq t at .4 (160) = 360 sabins
