JG just a suggestion, 1st thanks for everything you got my through when my professors couldn't... Now, idk if you're familiar with any of the data analysis tests but if so it would be awesome if you did videos on those. Maybe just explaining them you know the T-tests, Chi, Mann etc... and maybe even how to learn to choose those tests. I'm done with school but data/statistics is something you just have to keep at so I always look for vids & study and no one explains like you ❤!!! Thanks again for everything.

A population has the following values: { 2, -2, 2 -2}. The mean of those samples is 0. The Difference between any element in the set from the mean is 2. Using your formula, you get sqrt( (4 + 4 + 4 +4)/(4-1)) = 2.3. Wouldn't the The proper way to handle this when the entire population of a set is known is to divide by (n), instead of (n-1) therefore we see: sqrt (( 4 + 4 + 4 +4 ) / 4) = 2
@Chadabi Жыл бұрын
Yes, but usually in statistics exams you estimate the population mean and standard deviation from a sample or samples because generally the whole field of basic statistics is about going from a sample to a population. But in this case he should be using N instead of n-1

I wish I knew why the formula for standard deviation used here has "n-1" in the denominator. Just like with the mean it seems like the sum of the squares of each individual deviation should be divided by the number of elements in the set, i.e. just "n." Does my confusion here make sense to anyone that could help me? Thank you. Update: I found out via Khan Academy. It has to do with the fact that a small sample from a larger set returns a standard deviation closer to the larger set when n-1 is used in the denominator. If the sample set has almost the same population as the larger set then n-1 and n will be much closer in value. The standard deviation within the smaller sample set will approach the std dev of the larger set as more values are included in the sample set. For a very large population, say n = 9,000, a sample set taken from it containing all but one element will have an n = 8999 and an n - 1 = 8998. Obviously the 8998 is only 0.022% away from the "parent" population where n = 9000 so the std deviations of the sample and the parent sets will almost match perfectly. If the sample only had 100 elements in it then dividing by 99 (n-1) will yield a std dev closer to the std dev of the parent population than dividing by 100 (n) and this is due to the sample containing only 1.11% of the parent set. It is not an easy reason. Many videos on Khan try to explain it. Essentially, if the sample of a population is significantly smaller than the population it is taken from then the standard deviation of the sample will itself deviate more from the main population's std dev if we divide by n. Dividing by (n - 1) is a way to correct for this "bias" which results in a std dev that is smaller than it should be and which goes away as the value of (n - 1) for the sample gets closer to the the value of (n) for the population from which the sample is taken. See Khan Academy for more lol.

@@ryanw1140 Ah. Maybe don't worry about it then unless you are interested in a solid understanding of statistics for other reasons lol.
