In theory yes but you will need to check that all the assumptions and simplifications in BEM are reasonable for hydro. I have never worked with hydro, so I have never made those checks.

Hi Rosie, One quick question - is generation of tip vortices accounted for in the calculation of CL and CD for Blade Element Theory (with something like Lifting Line Theory), or is that not possible?
@prospertwizeyimana86152 жыл бұрын
Great work, In the video you mentioned that you can't use the BEMT to determine the optimum number of blades. But you also mentioned that this theory is good enough for the preliminary design of major blade geometry parameters including the number of the blades. Kindly clarify this. Thanks Prosper
@jakobgebel6332 Жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWeldKGeqseVn7M because in a 3 bladed turbine each blade does not affect the next one that much, zhus the overestimation of BEM (hich cant account for that loss) is relatively low. but if you would add 300 more blades, (which would obviously be insane) this model would think you have 100 times more thrust and torque, as it doesnt "know" the blades can affect each other. it always assumes perfect flow for all blades
@khalildeghoum3 жыл бұрын
thank you so much. I want to know are you have a program Matlab for BEM?
@EngineeringwithRosie3 жыл бұрын
I normally just use an Excel spreadsheet and copy paste to iterate the flow factors until it converges. It is very fast and cheap, I haven't had Matlab since I left uni. This book has some Matlab codes that come with it I believe: www.springer.com/gp/book/9781849961745 I used them years ago and they were a bit buggy so make sure to check if you use them.

Can you make a video about VAWT? its aerodynamics and how a deflector increase its efficiency?
@burhanahmed29783 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosie. I am designing a H-rotor VAWT but I am difficulty coming up with best dimensions for the blade. any suggestions??
@EngineeringwithRosie3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would suggest starting with your requirements (how much power do you want to produce) and your wind resource. Then that should get you in the right ballpark for sizing. Next I would choose based on what the standard sizes are for the critical components you need. It will be much cheaper, easier faster and more reliable if you can get as much as possible off-the-shelf. If you plan to build your own blades, this might mean thinking about how much space you have to get equipment in and out of your workshop, what standard lengths timber comes in if you will build a frame or mould, stuff like that. Good luck and please let me know how you go with your exciting project! By the way I am working on a video on VAWT design theory, but it is still probably a couple of months away.

I am not going to be able to make that video, it is a bit beyond my field of expertise sorry 😬 I was trying to find a video from someone else that could help you instead, but I haven't had much luck there either. Or its affect on turbine design? And if it's turbine design, which aspects specifically?

Hi Roise. Im design engeneer, and I m going to build HAWT with diameter 24 m. Wich aerofoil are U recomended TSR 4.5. Power output 20kwh. For BEM modeling and optimisation i use Qblade. Can U recomended softwere for design Hawt. Thank U for video and reply.
@EngineeringwithRosie3 жыл бұрын
Hi Demyan, wow that is a big turbine to be making on your own! The aerofoil will need to be chosen based on a lot of factors unique to your design, so I can't tell you what will suit you best. Don't forget structure and manufacturing, they will be just as important as aerodynamics when you're choosing your blade geometry. And you don't need to use the same aerofoil along the whole blade. Your size is in between "small" turbines (~50kW) and utility (MW scale), so you might find it hard to get an aerofoil for that size. I would suggest looking at research published in the early 1980s, when 20kW was utility scale. Try Sandia, NREL maybe universities like DTU or Delft, they might have published aerofoils youcould use. If you need to use aerofoils from much larger or much smaller turbines or aeroplanes then don't forget to calculate your Renoylds numbers because if yours is very different to what the aerofoil is intended for, you won't get the expected performance. And can you tell me what software you are looking for? You have Q-blade for the aerodynamic design, do you need 3D modelling software or something else?
@demyankor34013 жыл бұрын
@@EngineeringwithRosie Hi Rosie. I started my personal project couple month ago with mixed success. In my job I'm using autodesk inventor but it doesn't help(. Сoncerning to aerofoil I picked up NREL aerofoil S821, S819, S820, and in Qblade i calculate an optimum rotor, Cp, Torche, Thrust, bending moment. But I can't simulate 4 blade rotor with unusial inner structure in that aeroelastic tool. I understand that I need some CAD. Curently I know 2 programs - Qblade (2 moth of exp) and Ashes (2 days ). So I want to find some simple tool for calculating wind thurbine and rotor optimisation. As U writed above aboute Re nomb of current section of aerofoil I understan that. But I dont know where I can get 360 der aerofoil polar? X foil simulate in -25 deg + 30 deg. And eventualy I realised that it is experemental data or it is CFD computed data? Can u give a clue?

@Joorin47113 жыл бұрын
It's all about making iterations and as quickly as possible stop exploring something that has low or no potential. After having found something that looks promising it's time to spend more time and energy (money) to refine that idea with, for example, more complex analysis. The two statements you quote are not in opposition to each other since finding the "optimal solution" relies on later, and more expensive, steps in the process.
