How To: Calibrate a Brix Refractometer

Ensure the repeated accuracy and consistency of your measurements by calibrating your brix refractometer. Follow along with us to learn how.
Here's what you'll need:
1. A screwdriver
2. A solution applicator and cleaning cloth
3. Distilled water
For the purpose of this video, we'll be using the R9500 Brix Refractometer. These steps will work for most brix refractometers.
The steps start at 0:32 -
Step 1: Open the cover plate and place 2 or 3 drops of distilled water onto the prism - 0:32
Step 2: Cover the plate and press lightly to ensure the water spreads evenly across the whole surface area - 0:46
Step 3: Hold the refractometer towards a light source and look into the eyepiece - 0:50
Step 4: If the boundary line between the upper blue field and the lower white field is not located on the 0 degree Celsius line, adjust the calibration screw until both lines meet - 0:56
Step 5: Wipe the water from the prism and clean with a dry cloth - 1:16

Hello, please note that distilled water should be used whenever a brix measurement is performed as per the video description. For more information, we recommend checking out the REED R9500’s manual which can be found at our website linked in the description of the video .

Hello, please note that for seawater salinity we would recommend looking at our REED R9600 Salinity refractometer instead of our R9500 Brix Refractometer. The R9600 should have no problem determining the salinity level in your seawater as it has a measuring range of 0-28% salinity.

Does this need the water to be at 20°C?

Hello Wilvien, please note that our brix refractometer makes use of a temperature compensation table to allow for taking measurements between 10 °C and 30 °C. That being said, we recommend performing calibrations at 20 °C for accurate measurements.

I have been in this hobby for over 30 years and have never seen a hobby grade refractometer calibrated that way and be even remotely close to accurate. They sell calibration fluid at 35 ppm for a reason.

Hello Chris, please note that as with most brix refractometers, our REED Refractometers can be calibrated with most standards, including a 35 ppm standard. We recommend calibrating with a standard that is close to the expected reading, but the procedure for both distilled water and a 35ppm standard remains the same.
