How to Calibrate the Epilog IRIS Camera Laser Camera Calibration

Over the last few months, I have received a lot of questions about how I got started with laser machining and my entire journey. I decided to make a video going over my whole journey to this point. I hope that you find it helpful!

Thanks man for takin' the time to create a calibration overview. I use the Fusion 32 and find that the camera is okay for certain use cases but quite often annoying as it wastes time, material, and substrates as the further away you get from the center the WORSE it gets...calibration or not. Concentric circles don't line up inside of coasters, artwork gets skewed along the adjacent axis, and other "artifacts" such as focus issues show up in the finished product. My thoughts are that the standard design should have included "at least" two overhead cameras on all machines like they did for the Fusion 48. For spot on accuracy I end up using the red dot, measuring jigs and using templates, registration methods, etc. There are plenty of fantastic features on the Fusion, don't get me wrong, but kind of a bummer after spending five figures on these machines with the overhead fisheye camera as a main selling point. The Epilog Edge you're working with in this video may not show these issues as much because of the smaller platform, but as you stated, it's expected. A vid that shows how to get around this issue in the Job Manager may be really helpful (the Mini would never experience this problem as there is no camera)...just my opinion. storytellerHD I agree that there should be two cameras in all pro models. I still need to do more testing with it. When the item is under the camera it works great, but your correct about moving further out. I’ll have to look into it more.

I found this video very helpful! Just received my Edge 12 and the camera alignment was way out of wack. I couldn’t even see the laser bed. Epilog support recommended camera alignment but I was skeptical it could correct such a huge misalignment. The process in the manual is simple, but as they only supplied a blank anodized aluminum sheet (that was not perfectly flat) - I had no idea where to place magnets to avoid interfering with the engraving. Your video solved that problem for me. I think Epilog should include a picture of the engraving in their manual with ruled lines to indicate clear space where magnets can be placed. Doesn’t need to be to scale as long as the ruler lines are annotated. Thanks to your video, I got a .57 with the first calibration.

I know this is 2 years old, but thanks for doing it. I have a new Maker, and the instruction manual is leaving something to be desired in a few spots (outdated equipment shown, and referencing a page for calibration that doesn't have the instructions).

Great video! I'm curious, how did you find the value range of .5 - .6 as the acceptable score?? I have been searching for the recommended score in the manual but can't find any mention of this.

Thank you. Y Axis drive alarm, tracking alarm, anything happened while you were using it? I have Y left, Y right drive alarm now. So I can't use the machine. It's been 3 days since I requested technical support in Korea. There is still no answer. Is technical support fast in the US? Yaxis is not controlled properly.

Technical support in the U.S. is usually the same day. I haven’t received an error. What happens if you power cycle the machine? Will it let you use it without the camera being calibrated for now?

The calibration is stored in the machine. You just have to go to the calibration setting and it will run the file for you.

The camera of my epilog engraver stop working, any idea??

I would check and see if there is a firmware update. Some causes I’ve seen for this are a firmware issue, the IP address on the machine doesn’t match the IP address in your job manager software, or if you’re on a wireless connection and the Wi-Fi goes out that can happen. I hope that helps you narrow it down.

Thanks so much for the amazing video. One question, can I use the camera on the edge model to cut around printed area? I noticed on Epilog website that the edge model camera doesn’t have the camera with registration and wondering if the ones on the edge would work to cut prints.

So you can do it if you use a work around. I actually want to do a video on this but need to get a printed item.

@@ahmedas1991 I have cut around printed objects before with the camera it has. It is tricky to line up sometimes but it can work.

Thank you for the awesome video! I just calibrated my Epilog Fusion Edge 24 for the first time and received some troubling results. (Just received it today and went through training this afternoon) It has two iris cameras and it registered a score of .26 on one and .33 on the other. Do you know what could have caused this low of a score? With that score do I need to run the calibration again or how would you proceed with correcting it to be a good score of .5-.6?

My first suggestion is make sure that your bed is level across the table. That could throw off your score.
