We primarily use cast iron for cooking in our home and were asked to demonstrate how we care for and maintain our cast iron. Our cast iron is well seasoned so this video is not on how to season a cast iron skillet rather on the subject of cleaning and maintaining the skillet. Hope you find it useful. As mentioned this is not the only way to care for and maintain cast iron but I have found it to be what works for our family. If you have any other questions do not hesitate to ask in the comments below.

So not only did I learn how to clean my cast iron properly but I learned that the burners on a stove are called "eyes" as well. 😆 I never heard this before and had to Google it to see if I was hearing correctly and sure enough southerners call burners "👀 " Originally from wood stoves and a term for Whirlpool brand stoves. I love learning something new everyday. Blessings ❤🙏

I love, love my cast iron. I was given my grandmother's when she passed because the family knew that I would use it. So much history (and use) with those pans. I couldn't have gotten a better gift.

I'm so happy that you don't heat the pans before washing them under the water. Trying to maneuver a hot pan under hot water and tons of steam with foggy glasses was almost impossible. I'm brand new to cast iron but I followed your advice and invested in a few sizes of pots and pans when the time came to change my t-fals. I'll use your method of cleaning from now on and save myself the trouble

You should, but again I recommend just going antiquing and finding one that doesn't appear pitted, or rusted or with a bunch of "junk" built up on it

Good video! I think lard is the best to use on cast iron, but I’ve heard that flaxseed oil is great for the original seasoning. Although, there are conflicting reports on that as well. I use a baking soda paste on mine if I’ve cooked something strongly seasoned. I let it sit for a while and rinse it off. Thanks for sharing!

Oh good, I bought the same scrubbers. I did good on that part. Half way cleaning a used one I bought a year ago from an antique store and just haven't taken the time for it until now. I'm doing a dry scrub with baking soda and that steel pad ball to start and the old grease and moth ball smell coming off of it reminds me of my great grandma's house in the country growing up. It stinks but you kind of want to bottle that smell from your childhood. lol

Happy Mother's Day! I've been collecting cast iron (new and supposedly pre-seasoned) for quite some time now as we intend to have it seasoned by the time our homestead is ready to be lived on. I can't wait for the day.Anyway, I've found it helpful to get a good season to cook things like bacon and to pan-fry meats or make something like deep fried fritters in newly cleaned and seasoned cast iron. I'm not sure why solid shortening or lard is recommended for the step after cleaning them with hot water? Does it actually matter if you use oil or solid shortening/fat?
@1870s
@1870s 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter whether you use liquid or solid fats. Iron will rust so you have to maintain the coating on it

I know this is a super old video but, can I store my cast iron in the oven and do I need to take it out when I cook in the oven? I don't use it mainly because I don't know how. When my dad passed away I got all his pieces. He probably had 20-30 pieces. Those I put in my spare room. Am I doing it wrong. I want to try to learn how to use it but I haven't done it yet.

I do wonder how greasy it makes the pans when stacking after you grease them. I do not have the room to leave my pans in the stove.

It can be okay to do, but you can't do it with anything that you're going to cook for a really long time. The acid will break down the codeine a bit

You can, but if you leave them sit long it can get funky. If you use them many times per week like we do, you can get away with it.

I am new to cast iron cooking. Why do you not use soap?
@1870s
@1870s 4 жыл бұрын
Soap is designed to remove oil, therefore soap will damage your seasoning. Some say this is a myth but I have personally had cast iron pans ruined from uniformed house members trying to be helpful in cleaning my cast iron with soap or put in dishwasher. So I choose to follow the traditional way myth or not for cleaning my cast iron

OK, somebody help me out. Had the whole pan all stripped down to nothing. Rinsed it out good, put it on the burner to dry and heat up. Called Dad (country boy) and I told him how far along I was, sent pictures and said "Dad, I'm putting it in the oven. Bacon grease or Crisco?" He said bacon grease. Cool. Covered the whole thing including the handle, put it in the oven at 350 for an hour. It has cooled for round two. It's sticky as crap! I didn't think I had too much bacon grease and wiped out the excess. What did I do wrong before I start round two?
