Plant the gerbera daisy in early spring, after the last frost. Plant the seeds immediately upon opening the package or they will dry out. Gerbera daisy seeds are very delicate and if they're not able to retain their moisture, they won't germinate. Plant the seeds or flowers in a spot that will allow them a full day of sunlight.
Plant the daisy in nutrient-rich soil with 1 to 2 inches of organic compost mixed in. This increases germination and moisture.
Don't worry about humidity. However when keeping a plant indoors during the winter, you may want to spray the leaves and buds with water once or twice a week. Open flowers don't need to be sprayed.
Remove dead flowers from the flowerbed or pot, so they don't continue soaking up nutrients. Otherwise, the dead flowers will deprive the other plants, causing their health to decline .
1)Place your gerberas in a sunny windowsill where they can get approximately six hours of sunlight per day. Find a semi-shaded area outside if you are growing them outdoors -- a shaded patio or veranda is ideal.
2)Expose your gerberas to average local temperatures. Avoid temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, if possible, since heat may cause your gerberas to stop blooming. If you can't provide your gerberas with a shaded outdoor area, move them indoors during the hottest hours of the day.
3)Water your gerbera plants in the morning. Avoid wetting the flowers -- moisten the soil that the pants grow in. Allow the soil to dry before watering again. Avoid overwatering your gerberas as this may trigger poor flower growth and root or crown rot.
4)Fertilize your gerberas every other week during the spring and summer flowering period. Use a water-soluble fertilizer that's rich in potassium and phosphorous.
5)Mist the leaves of your gerbera plants with water at least once a week to increase the humidity and prevent red spider mites.
6)Remove old, discolored leaves and faded flowers and stems to maintain your gerbera plants, prevent fungus infections and to encourage new growth.
