i live in the netherlands i germinated a hass avocado pit with the toothpick method let the plant grow to 30 cm and pruned it to 15cm then let it grow back to 30cm and then potted it in soil this week and it is doing great hope it will live a long time!

Buddy, I've had so many failures with planting and growing avocados. Especially Simmonds. I live in Venice, FL. I watched one of your videos where you planted one, covered it, didn't even water it because you said the rain was coming so this is what I did. I dug the hole, wide and shallow (just as high as the pot). I drenched the hole full of water. Took the Simmonds out (it is about 5 feet tall). I didn't break up the root too much aside from getting the roots a bit more out because it was SLIGHTLY root bound and didn't want the root to continue in a circle. I sprinkled some great white mycorrhizae on it, I didn't cut any roots or trim the tree however. Covered it, added some mushroom compost and organic aspen mulch and left it alone. We have had a little rain since but no down pours. I must say, aside from a few yellow leaves (and I literally mean few, like 5 lol) the tree looks healthy. The question I have for you, at what point should I say, "ok... can't wait on the rain anymore.. time to water"? Or do I? And if yes, water, for how long? Would love a video on watering. That's my biggest issue with everything from avocados to mangoes. Thanks bud. I had also sent you an email on ordering some Simmonds Avocados, if you had any.

yes I would go ahead and water it every 5 days until the rains come. in that vid I just didn't feel like getting out the hose and everything because I knew it was gonna rain I start with Simmonds in about 10 days.

I threw an avocado seed into my compost pile thinking nothing of it, and found a really beautiful little plant after a while! I pulled it up and was surprised that it was the avocado seed growing. I've got it in a pot now and it survived getting nibbled by a caterpillar and grew back, it's over a foot tall now with several leaves. Fingers crossed it'll be okay indoors this winter!

Hi there the only method that has worked for me is too peel the seed then wrap it in damp kitchen roll in a plastic bag until it sprouts a root. Then either put it in water and later into soil or just put them straight into soil. (Actually just on top of the soil with the root buried) I have noticed the seeds put straight into soil after sprouting roots look a lot healthier than the seedlings transplanted from water to soil.

I never had any luck from seeding in water with toothpicks or the wet paper towel method or zip lock bag I live in Victoria Australia its a cold environment all year except summer so its hard to grow them from seed this is my second year with a lot of experiments I finally got a seedling from a store brought seed I put It in 300ml bottle top i have cut off put soil in it then put my seed in the soil then put it upside down in the rest of the bottle I filled with water so it self feeds water from the bottle and the soil keeps it from dyeing from mold it take longer to seed but once it dose you can transplant into a bigger pot and it wont suffer shock going from only water to soil as it was raised in soil and water.

N Z, it's unlikely you'll be able to get fruit indoors I don't think London's climate will allow you to do more than keep the tree as a house plant which can be fun and rewarding, but not quite the same as getting fruit.

Just discovered your channel and cant get enough of it. I live in Greece which has a mediterranean climate and have tried several times to grow from seed. Some dont make it and then some do root and sprout but they grow for a while and then the leaves start to die on me and the plant eventually withers. What am I doing wrong. They are not big enough to re-pot so its not that. I have only used the seed in the glass method and usually do this around this time of the year.

All depends where you live. If you're in a cold environment you can bring it inside and keep it next to a window and just keep the soil damp. If it has a growth spurt then transfer to a bigger pot.

For whatever reasons, the conditions are just right again. Here in Chinatown, where our average temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit, avocado seeds have rooted and sprouted in the ground. I see seedlings. Maybe this time, the trees will grow to give fruit. Now I have to get a hunting knife. That will make all the difference.

Mohammad, we'll graft these trees next year and they'll start to fruit quickly, like 2-3 years. But I'll prune the buds for the first few years because I don't want big heavy fruit growing on a little tree that hasn't matured yet...i'd rather they dedicate that energy to growth.

I have a tree that is about a year and half, its about 3-4 ft tall. I learned from you that it needs to be pruned in order to get it to branch. If I want it to have good fruit I know I need to graft it, but at this point, with it being so tall, what do I do first? It needs a bigger pot, but also to be pruned, and I want to graft it. Can I do all this at once? Or should I just prune it and re-pot it, and wait till next spring to graft it? when it'll be taller. Sorry for the long question, but thank you for all the info!

Hi Jennifer, You want to have at least a month between stressful events. I recommend you prune first then wait a month and repot. Then you can graft in the summer. Good luck!

My mango seed is starting to turn slightly yellow, it used to be white. And the seed is already stuck firmly into the soil. I decided to check the soil of my avocado and it came with a really strong foul smell, especially around its canapy not too deep, the deeper I go, the more roots I accidentally break, so I usually stop digging when I reach that level. I check the soil because there's something off about my main avocado- he's not growing, there is a really bad smell from the rootstock as well and the tiny buds or nodes right above the leaves turned orange or brown, so it's not likely that he'll send out a side shoot. When I looked closer, I saw larvae crawling in the soil and most of the roots I've broken, appeared dark brown and dried up, or rotten even. But ner the rootstock the roots are pale, but still extremely fragile. There is quite a bit of browning on the leaves, which grows when the tree is thirsty. Every leaf has some damage. I'm worried. There are microscopic white spots on the leaves, particularly the lower ones. I'm very worried. I think it's infested with spider mites. And this root rot problem is geeting out of hand. I might think about buying a copper fungicide. Do you think that a copper fungicide would help, as well as a fertilizer? I think it will.

Thanks for taking the time to make these excellent videos, I have two 4 feet avocado trees which i am planning on planting in the ground next year, problem is the leaves turn brown and the top of the plant turns black, I saw you use copper spray so i bought a bottle and sprayed them they are starting to look better after two days, you said spray them once a month, if the plant gets wet would i have to spray more often? The next thing i plant to do is graft them with another variety but i want o leave one of the original branches on the plant as well, is that okay?

Mdiaz Diaz, Thank you for the compliment and congratulations on your two trees. Good question regarding moisture and spraying. It's best to spray when the tree is dry and will stay dry for the rest of the day. So if it's recently rained wait a bit or if you expect it to rain later then wait a day. It's fine if the tree gets wet between monthly applications. And yes, you can leave some original growth as well as graft. In fact you can graft multiple varieties to the same tree if you want. People have been successful with up to 4 varieties on one tree.

I've had this happen. you need to carefully dig the roots out from under the pot then cut or break the pot away from your tree and repot in a bigger size.

I live in south central Texas and I finally have achieved sprouting an avocado seed that was store bought. It has now reached a height of 12 inches and I believe I should transplant to a pot, but I want to ensure a good soil combination for growth. Any advice?

Congratulations on the successful sprout! And yes your'e ready to transplant. All you need to do is fill a three gallon or bigger pot with regular potting soil. No need for any special mix or anything, just regular potting soil. Then you can go around the inner ring of the pot with a spoonful or two of 6-6-6 fertilizer. Be sure and stick to the outside of the pot so you don't burn the roots and stalk. I assume at some point it will be indoors over winter so keep it near a window a keep the potting soil damp. You'll want to keep going to bigger pots over time so you don't stunt the tree's growth. Good luck!

Jennifer, Thanks for reaching out. The bigger the pot the better so as big as you can fit is the way to go. Also, given the short ceiling I recommend you periodically prune the top to encourage lateral growth and stem widening. Good luck with the tree over the winter.

dear sir: I bought two trees, a avacodo, a peach. Both in 15 gallon container. Is it worth while to transfer to a burlap type bag for one year before putting into ground permanently? Winter in 9b zone has a few freeze nights and I need the trees to be ready for outdoor. I want to get them strong indoors using burlap/bag first (ie air prune, and move into indoor during cold nights during that time)? Is it worth doing? Are you sure they were in the 15 gallon pot for years? Nurseries typically don’t leave trees in the same pot for years to prevent them from becoming route bound. Anyhow I think it would be best to leave it in a pot rather than transfer the burlap bags otherwise your plan is perfect

I have a question. I have several seedlings that are about 10-15in long. The problem is the stem is not really thick, it's somewhat skinny. How thick does the stem have to be, and how could I get the stem to "thicken" up? Also, how high up from the bottom of the stem do you recommend grafting? 3-4 inches? Thanks!

the stem needs to match the diameter of the budwood you're grafting, it can be thick or thin as long as it matches. I prune the tops of my seedlings which causes the stem to thicken. As for how high maybe 5-6 inches. Good luck!

I've started growing an adovado tree myself, got no clue which kind it is, or type a or b it is, but it's grown well and hasn't died yet. I also live in Norway and started in January from seed. It's gotten about 5 inches or so tall but i've run into some issues. For one, it's having the same symptom of one of yours as it only grows leaves on the top of it, Though it has tried to grow leaves below, they don't seem to get any progress and one shoot died before it got to a leaf. I can't really Prune it to give it another shot at leaves as it wont have any if i do. I'm having a problem with the leaves not being completely green and a little see through. I've heard it could be an iron deficiancy but idk. I had it under a bedside lamp for its seed to seedling stage and upped it to a brighter lamp afterwards and have now tried to use a growlight, but i'm unsure of what color to use. Only the top leaves seem to grow bigger, while leaves right below remain small, so idk what it means. kinda new to this.

I’m sorry to have to break bad news to you. You won’t be able to keep an avocado tree alive in the Canadian winter. Not even in the Canadian autumn. It’s just too darn cold up there. Sorry about that. Your only option is to keep it indoors as a house plant maybe bring it outside on warm summer days.

a little spoonful about every 60 days. Put it around the edge of the pot, not close to the stem or you can burn it.

SleepyLizard yes both of their leaves are looking greener and healthier, I think they had to much direct sunlight so I moved them slightly further from my window and they seem happy. Thanks for your help I think I’ll transplant them this week and hope they do well

nah, it's just a branch. prune the smaller one so the big one gets all the nutrients, otherwise they're just going to stunt each other's growth.

My daughter in law gave me an avocado plant about 6 months ago or so, it’s now about 8 ft tall and I’m going to have to bring it in for the winter (zone 6). I’m not trying to grow fruit I just like the plant. What should I do going forward , trim it somehow? I could wrap it and put it in my garage if you think that would be better for it? Not sure what to do going forward?

Terry, yes definitely prune the tree to keep it at the size you want. And it might be worthwhile to repot it next season. After you bring it back outside give it a month to acclimate then transplant to a bigger pot. Keep in mind, moving from outside to inside or inside to outside can cause the tree to lose some leaves, don't worry about that it's normal.

I have a question hoping you can help me with. I had 2 avocado trees that died on me and apparently they died of root rot. Now I got a new avocado tree coming in. Can I or should I plant the avocado tree in the same exact soil as the other avocado trees that died of root rot or do I need to replace the soil so that I don't run the risk of the new tree getting the root rot infection?

Hi P Train, are you talking about in the ground or in pots? If you're referring to planting directly in the ground I'd choose another spot, maybe with higher ground or build a mound. if pots then make sure they have good drainage and use new potting soil thanks for reaching out.

The new dead avacado trees had in the pots pearl light and mushroom compost and the avocado trees still got root rot so should I use playground sand and pearl light to help increase the drainage even more? I have a green avocado in a 10 gallon bucket who’s Hass graft failed (I don’t know the variety of the seed, it came in a hello fresh meal box lol). I thought I killed it because I cut the leaves off to graft. The graph failed right away. All my grafts died. It’s so dry in southern az. Anyway, I was mourning my graphs when this one sprouted 2 new tops! it’s stupid happy in a south facing window in the house now… I just mist it once a day and water it once a week. I want to order scions & try grafting it again. How do you deal with a failed graft?

I'm happy to hear your tree is recovering. You are dealing with the failed graft exactly the way you should, cut it below the graft and let the seedling recover and try again.

Fisher, no bother at all. As long as you live somewhere that doesn't get frost you can plant the tree anytime. I like to plant them small because you don't need to dig as big a hole and also the roots will be well formed by the time the tree gets 4 to 5 feet tall. If you get frosts you might want to let the tree mature a bit more in a bigger pot...the bigger trees can survive a frost but the small ones might die.

So I grew a avacado from seed using the toothpick method. It thrived for a year then I re-potted it and the leaves dried up and died but there was new leaves but they dried up. I live in the uk and left it in the sun while it was hot but it had thrived in the house. Was it too much sun too fast or the re potting that killed it? I’m so mad that I killed it. sometimes repotting can be traumatic and they wilt and die. Your best bet is to do a few at a time...if you've got 6 or 7 and some of them don't make it you'll have others that did.

Hi J, a tree planted from seed will fruit in 7-10 years...or not at all. It's luck of the draw. If you want the tree to fruit find a nearby nursery and have them graft it for you. You'll have fruit in 3 years.

I have an avocado tree I got from a local grower In Sarasota FL. It is around 3 1/2 feet tall. There are a few branches close to the grown, some leaves touching the grass, seems something might be taking a bite out of them? I am trying to learn if and how to prune this tree. Any suggestions? I am new at this first timer. I have a 4 foot and a 5 1/2 foot mango tree. I am wondering about them too. I love your videos on both. I'm just worried about cutting them. Marc, yes you can go ahead and prune the low branches. Pruning is important, especially pruning the top which encourages lateral growth and truck thickening. It's hard to do the first time because you feel like you're harming the tree but in the long run it's healthy for your tree. Good luck with it!

I'm growing two indoor avocado trees that were grown in water, one of them has been planted in soil, however, the leaves of this one are turning brown. It's been in the soil now for about a month and I'm wondering if you could give some tips on how to save it if possible? I've watched some tutorials of people saying that it could be too much salt in the water, if this is the case, should I repot it using some better soil? You need to start pruning the top. That causes lateral growth. Research pruning techniques and you'll be good...it's hard to do at first because you've been trying to make things grow and now you gotta cut them but once you see the results it's easier.

Got 2x bacon and 1x haas,(In Australia) they are almost a year old, need to ammend our soil before we plant, lots of clay so I'm planning to did some big holes and add some gypsum and start some compost in each hole and then put them on top in a mound, sound like a good plan? I don't want to kill them (we get frost sometimes in winter and 40 deg days in summer so they have to be protected till they are about 2 i hear. Morgs88, Yeah sounds like a good plan you have there. As for protecting from frost this vid might give you some ideas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZKaqZWNpdR_a6c. Once they reach maturity they will tolerate cold better but you'll still need to take action in the event of a frost. As for growing trees from seed you have two issues neither of which are a myth: First, the tree will take 10 or more years to produce fruit if it ever produces at all. Second, if they do produce fruit it usually doesn't taste very good. I have one mature tree from seed that grew in a forested section of my property. I think a squirrel or something left a seed there and nobody ever noticed it. Some years it gives 200 fruit other years it gives none, one year it gave 2. In any case the fruit is bland, not bad but just bland. I'll be grafting onto it next year. If your trees, the Bacon and Hass are seedlings from the seeds of Bacon and Hass avocados they are actually not Bacon and Hass. The mix of DNA in that seed will be the product of the male and female flowers that pollinated it therefore it's DNA will differ from the mother tree. So if they're grown from seed you'll need to graft Bacon and Hass (or whatever variety you want) onto them to make them true. If on the other hand you bought grafted trees or grafted them yourself then you should start seeing fruit 2-3 years from now. Hi Asha, Sometimes your tree will lose a few leaves and regrow new ones when you transplant. I'd say keep watering every other day and look for new leaf growth.

I had an avocado seed in a cup of water for a few months, it finally opened up and there was a little bud coming out with some roots. It stopped growing and was sitting outside in this cup for ages, so I just planted it in my garden. A few weeks later, I saw that I had an avocado sapling that's growing pretty quickly! Katie, You can do it if you dig a nice wide hole and go gently. You'll notice the tree start to droop a little but then it'll be ok

Where are you located at? I have 2 mango trees I planted 4 years ago and they are not growing. I'm in Florida and we have a sandy soil. We have a sandy soil , I fertilize in spring and they have 2 or 3 new shoots come out and thats it. I have some avocado seeds just starting in a cup that I'm going to plant. I guess I need to dig out some of the sand and replace it with some other soil. Any advise from a pro?

I started 4 seeds with roots just after the seed split 3 of them successfully sprouted out (the seeds started out in a damp paper towel in a plastic bag on my windowsill in a box) and I'm actually surprised they are still alive since they have to have artificial sunlight

Joshua, I just did a vid the other day about a seed I set in water then forgot about for over 2 months and it sprouted into a little tree. Avocado trees are survivors. I had used the seed as nothing more than a prop in a vid then discarded it. Imagine my surprise when I was cleaning my patio and came across it. thank you for your comment.

@@SleepyLizard at first the seeds were showing no progress after a while in the box so I just got starter pots and planted them. I basically thought if they are going to make it I need to give them some soil and currently they are skinny tall baby trees and are enjoying the new red and purple (or blue I forgot which light spectrum) grow panel I got them. Currently in my collect I own over 20 different plant species with a wide range of requirements especially my carnivorous plants.
