the reason why they suggest doing the water protection spray is because of the length of time it takes for the spray to dry. which is roughly 12-24 hours, also when the boot is wet the leather pores are opena dn better able to absorb the waterproofing spray. LOWA has a video on their website on boot care and maintenance. it's in german but if you throw on Closed Captions (there is a handy CC button near the settings option in the video) it explains it very well.
