I must apologize for the changing quality through out the video; I had some technical issues.

Not gonna lie, was half-expecting to the video to be 5 seconds long with just the words "mit zwei hand" and that would be the end of it, haha

I usually use the one with the crossguard on my right shoulder. But you have to get used to it, because with heavier variants, your shoulder will hurt after prolonged periods. I carried it like that all day on a convent and my shoulder hurt for the next 2 days. I have a pretty chunky boi though, so that certainly did not help.

Interesting tutorial. I was thinking about that, because I plan to buy a greatsword next spring and I want to carry it at medieval festivals. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Sir !

Yeah I usually shuffle between these on festival since sometimes I want to look at the goods of the sellers without bumping into their tent-ceilings or need to hold the sword in a manner so people behind me don't get hit when I turn. Hope some of these grips will help you💪

I'd consider the fact that there are so many options, that there is no really good universal option. I'd guess the factors would be how well protected the arms were, how quickly deployable, whether or not the weapon becomes dangerous for the carrier or those around him and of course, how energy efficient it was. Personally, if I was alone and the weather would be as enjoyable as the weather you had while filming, I'd very much agree with the first over the shoulder approach.

I wonder what the biggest sword is that is actually somewhat convenient to carry around
@UserNamechannel
@UserNamechannel 2 жыл бұрын
Depends how big you are. A longsword is already a little less convenient than an arming sword. So, probably a large-ish variation of longsword for most people would be the max to wear on the hip, and even that wouldn't exactly disappear from your mind as you carry it.
@pandapruitt2542
@pandapruitt2542 2 жыл бұрын
@@UserNamechannel maybe it would be a sword that doesn't exist like a really long really flexible sword you just wrapped around your torso lol

Hi! The manuscripts and depictions usually say that a Montante for example should be about the size of the wielder. Something about the length from the ground to the chin, or even Man high. I think if you have to carry a weapon around, it will get on your nerves, like a Rifle or machine gun for the soldier who has been carrying it around for days and weeks. Even a smaller sword on your hip. Maybe a long Dagger will do the trick.

I ever ask me if the way of the swiss guards method is a variation because of the assautrifles modern soldiers use regulary. Btw. Godinho told us to carry the greatsword without the sheet at night, because if you had to use it and leave the sheet in the streets, you could be identified by it 😄 Okay nothing we should be thinking of today 😅😁

There's another option: a functioning backscabbard! Someone else here on youtube, Shadiversity, figured out how to make a functional backscabbard. Essentially, you make a scabbard that is open on one side down to half its length, with a bit of extra, rigid material flaring out there, along which the guide the sword in, and to avoid poking yourself. In order to secure it to your back, you can use any manner of ties or belts you think should work, although I have seen that two straps - one standard going from shoulder to hip and the other being able to be tied or fastened on at right angles to the first, under the arm - works very well
@bagamnan9170

or you could get a scabbard for it and wear it on your back like a backpack as seen in videogames right?
@A_Medieval_Shadow
@A_Medieval_Shadow 2 жыл бұрын
I think you can make it work like a sheath with a gunsling around your shoulder. It is mind boggling how difficult it is to find a text, a picture, carpets and so on wgich depicts or describes a Sheath or a scabbard. With the parrying lugs on Montantes for example it is difficult to build, but not impossible to make one. Then again, you find nothing and the sources I could find describe the swords carried with the bare Blade. Shadiversity found several cool possibilities to wear swords on your back. He even made viable Backscabbard for longswords. You should check out his video about using magnets to draw and sheath a sword, they are good.

@@A_Medieval_Shadow Yeah Shadiversity really experimented a lot on making this idea work more or less convenient, but still not nearly as convenient as carrying a standard sword. Honestly I doubt there ever was a custom to carry swords like them, because no where in history did they find such an item or was it mentioned. My assumption is that they simply carried their sword, one way or another, but not sheated, as there are no references anywhere that support this theory. Still good thinking on his part though :)
