Finally catching up after our road trip! Got a love Brookies and underwater releases!

Thanks! I'm working hard to get more underwater shots like that in the catch segments, so long as I don't unnecessarily stress the fish out too much.

Thanks Lance! The beauty of the air brush is it just adds up in layers and comes together much more quickly than you think! Thanks for watching!

That's a fantastic video idea! I know I covered it in my series on carving a wooden trout, but I think it was mixed in with a ton of other things in that part. I will certainly have a video cover this in detail in the near future.

I've got many many hours in on figuring out my style and...ya know..."reference sampling" fish out there on the water, but everybody has their own approach and style to carving, so I know yours would be rad and will evolve over time, too! Thanks for watching!

Oh man, you have to give it a shot! I started out with basic hardware store chisels, a hammer and handsaw, and went from there. With Dremel tools and nicer chisels so accessible, I’d highly recommend hopping in and giving it a shot!

Kinda got a backlog of fish that I’ve got on camera, actually! Caught a giant German brown trout on the fly, a big smallmouth bass, white crappie, and should get my hands on a big ol’ largemouth bass here shortly. Thinking I’ll switch up to the smallmouth bass for the next one. What would you like to see next?

beautiful work! im about to paint my first wood carved brook trout. wondering why you carved the tail separate instead of one piece with the body like you did for the dorsal and anal fins? was it grain direction?
@RiverbendWoodworks Жыл бұрын
Hi Danny, for most of my carvings I prefer the separate tail approach because of the flexibility it gives me in cutting out the initial body shape on the bandsaw and because I usually don’t have the full picture of how I want to mount the carving at that point. It gives me a little more freedom to detail the fin without having a really delicate part attached. If the fish is much smaller than this however, i almost always carve the tail as part of the design. Grain direction does factor in for basically all fins because it sure can save a lot of headache if you get the grain right from the start. Just wanted to note that I love your work on your channel! You do fantastic breakdowns of the process!
@Danny_Harris-Arts Жыл бұрын
@@RiverbendWoodworks I used to do them separately but the fit and finish was harder than the rest of the fins for me. But I’m new to wood carving, 3 years now so I’m still learning. Been following your channel for a year or so. I enjoy your work.

I think you should carve a jumbo trophy size bass. Closed mouth pose. Obviously don't expect it to be a catch to carve.
@RiverbendWoodworks3 жыл бұрын
As a matter of fact I have a Catch2Carve of a giant smallmouth I caught on a fly just a few weeks ago! That'll be in the works shortly. I tried my hand at largemouth the other day and lost two fish over 5lbs on popper frog flies! Soooo bummed.
@Dnps8073 жыл бұрын
@@RiverbendWoodworks I'm thinking along the lines of really big. Like a 15 lb fat bellied sow kind of big.

Oh man, I'd have to start fishing' in a whole new kinda place for that Catch2Carve :-P Would love the challenge of that though!
@Dnps8073 жыл бұрын
@@RiverbendWoodworks you could skip the catch part, and it would still be a great project. Can always just use a smaller fish for a model, and you definitely have the skills

What tool are you using on the ends of the fins? Some sort of burning tool?
@RiverbendWoodworks3 жыл бұрын
I do use my Colwood woodturner for the fin tips because you can get a very fin edge and it also hardens the tips in preparation for paint. Works great.

What type of wood do you like to work with for carving?

Honestly, I prefer tupelo because it holds a great edge, but lately I’ve been getting my hands on bass wood, which is also a great option.

Did you know that the ol 'Square Tail is not a trout , but rather a char . I don't believe that Lake Trout (Touge round my neck of the woods) is either, also a char. Don't even get me started on Striped Bass !!
