Perfect length, no fluff, well edited, and fantastic information. One tip I'd add for beginners would be to carve the bowl first. This might assist when correcting overcut in the bowl.
@edwardcharles976410 жыл бұрын
Ben, I don't know about carving spoons but I know about backs! Your lower back will give you problems in a few years. You need to raise your chopping block so you're not bent over so much. Try and stand as straight up as possible. Nice vid and lots of advice, most on the safest way of cutting. Give your lower back some consideration as well.
@GrandpaBill10 жыл бұрын
BOY! can I agree with that! At 69 I'm really paying for it big time. Now if I bend over for even a few minutes, I'm feeling for the next hour or two. Save your back now and you won't have to pay for it later.

A real treat to watch. It’s so nice to see a demonstration where the presenter isn’t in love with the sound of his own voice and just gets on with the job. Thank you for a really inspirational video.

Great lesson, thank you for sharing it. I bought some carving knives from you several years back. They have much longer handles than the one you're using for carving the bowl in this video. I cannot remember what you called them years back. It struck me as a Native American name. Just found the name by scrolling down your list of spoon carving videos: Mocotaugan is the word I was looking for. When you get to 73, the remembering gets a bit tougher. Thanks again for the fine video.

Nice job, just the type of spoon shape I like. You did good on the details as well. The one thing I wish you had added at the end is some advice on treating the wood so it's food safe. (Because of the acids in some foods can get into the wood fibers.)

Just found this video and find it far superior to others on the same subject. In reviewing the comments I took note of one expressing concern with lower back issues using your axe technique. After 2 back surgeries I would not be able to use the axe as you have. But I will use your shaping instructional with a shaving horse and drawknife to allow me to stand up when I finish. Ha

I was expecting it to turn out a lot more bulky than that. More chunky. Did some green wood work last year and loved it. You've inspired me to have a go at some more kitchen spoons this season. Which are the best to use for kitchen utensils without poisoning anyone? :D I feel a bit more confident about correct, controlled and safe cutting (etc.) techniques after having seen this. Oh, and I like the way you say, 'spoon'.
@Youngknives8210 жыл бұрын
Very informative Ben and some great skills shown! But can I add one point? When I was taught to make spoons I was told to always leave a section at the end of the bowl so you can work back from the bowl with ease then cut it off when everything else is done
