How to Cast an Open Faced - Conventional "Bait Caster" Fishing Reel

I definitely put ALL my money on conventional reels. They are more monofilament friendly than spinning reels. Monofilament is the best line but the screwy mechanism on a spinning reel twists and tangles the line. Also when you cast a spinning reel the line comes off in a clumpy way which induces lots of drag thereby reducing distance and accuracy

Braid 4 Life. I’ve hung 120lb mirrors on a wall using 65lb braid. Shit can’t be broken unless hung up on oysters. I’ve yanked tree trunks out of the water hook still in tact.

Gonna put a heavy disagree, braid is better than mono in nearly every conceivable way. The only serious negative about braid is that really sensitive and observant fish can detect braided line a little better than mono, but once you get above 20lb line that changes entirely.

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

Appreciate this so much bro. I found a couple reels of this style cheap for catfishing, wanted the click drag but never knew how they worked. Once I've got them cleaned & greased I'll be outback throwing a water bottle for practice. Showing a kid can do it, sadly was just the push I needed to stay with these old reels vs buying a new one

Great vid, I see you are primarily sidearmed as you indicate not over the top. I think sidearm works for me throwing live bait if I have room. Seems like less shock to the bait. However, I always throw over the top when tossing metals and plugs, side by side with other guys in a blitz on the beach. So, I'd recommend guys learn both styles but your cast and the kids are A+! +1; I never use side arm casting except for trees or skipping; that's for baseball golf and other silly things. The overhand cast will always outperform the side arm. Look at where the bait is at release? It's overhead and not coming up off the ground. And yes you won't snag the guy next door or out of the back of the boat. I am stopping fishing with my best friend out of the back of his boat cause I am tired of watching his bait whiz past my face or wrapped around my rod. I could use other colorful examples but this is not the place. Tight lines.

You need stronger leader line. 50lb with 5 Oz. You can then use lighter main line for more distance.In uk this is rule for safety. However if you are not powercasting you are probably ok.

Thanks for the video. I just got my first conventional(penn squall 2 casting special) and oh boy was the first day a rough one. I wasn’t even aware when buying the reel that backlash was such an issue with these. After about 30 birds nests, I finally gave up out of frustration. I did spool it with braid, so I think I’ll swap it out for mono today to make it a bit more forgiving. Hopefully using these tips tonight, I’ll have some success. Cheers!

Don’t give up!!! You’ll be glad you stuck with it. Just start slow and don’t try to overdo it. Once you get the rhythm of your reel, you’ll be casting far!!!!

Those videos are very curious for me because in Europe we don't use such types of conventional reels for casting, but for trolling or vertical jigging. The ones we use for casting are open front conventional reels with magnetic or centrifugal brakes such for example the Daiwa SL20SH or the famous Daiwa 7ht, but also reels like the good ole Abu Garcia 6500 CT Mag... We also use different types of rods for that type of reels, for example the very renowned Daiwa HPBs

@@watchyourlip3209 if you know what I mean, expecially in Italy but also in other european countries with an outlet on the mediterranean sea, we use a surfcasting form that is the mediterranean adaptation of english style (Neil Mckellow, Paul Kerry). In a nutshell, because tides arent sufficient for moving the bottom, we wait for frontal wind that creates strong waves.

Got a conventional reel to try something other than spinning reels, I watched this video before buying to get an idea of what to do, and while I am nowhere near as talented with it as you are, I was able to cast without destroying the reel and the few backlashes I got were very easy to undo. If it were not for experienced fisherman making educational videos such as this one, my reel would probably look like a cast net lol.

Here in the uk ... Rule of thumb..for your shock leader is.. 10lb for every 1oz that you cast... Me myself i use 20 foot ...60lb shockleader down to 15lb main line..👍

Went out today with 12' rod and Penn squidder, 30lb line (Nassau sound, Jacksonville, FL), very frustrating day, many birds nests. Came home and got on KZbin to try to figure out what I'm doing wrong, Thanks for your vid. If I cast overhand or try the up and out way, the same thing happens, at 80 -100 yards something is catching the line on the spool before it hits the water...then I get a massive backlash (birds net) or sometimes the line breaks and I lose everything. When I first got it, I practised casting on a soccer field and decided to mag it, so I put 2 mags and 2 washers. I think after watching your video i need to tighten the ball bearing (I've kept the spool loose) and keep my thumb on the spool (I let go after I cast).

I use both conventional and spinning reels while surf fishing, but in my opinion, conventional reels are just funner. They definitely require a bit more attention to technique, but it's very satisfying once you get it down. Much easier to throw heavy lead with conventional as well. Spinning reels definitely have their time and place, but if you spend a lot of time at the surf chucking bait, a conventional reel or two should definitely be in your arsenal.

Hi- I inherited my dad’s old Penn reels. He had a 505HS super jigmaster, Senator 1/0, and a Leveline 350M. The last two have a 3:1 gear ratio. I’m thinking of using these with crab snares to catch dungenous crab. One question I had is regarding use of the bail(?) lever. I noticed that before you cast, you moved the lever to have a free bail. After completing the cast, do you move the lever back to “lock” the bail and retrieve line? Thanks!

General rule of thumb is 10lb of test for each ounce of weight. So if you're using 30lb test mainline use a 60lb shock leader to avoid crack offs

I bought a lews laser xl and i was so worried about casting and backlash... so far i havent had a single issue with casting but working the drag.. baitclicker.. and overall adjustment im having trouble. the owners manual was just a diagram of how to take the thing apart and i have no idea how to set my drag or bait clicker once i have my bait out and on the bottom... bout to switch back to spinning.

There are two drag systems. One is the ball bearing nob. It tightens or loosens the spool. Adjust this on how easy you want line to come off the reel when in free spool. The drag system (either a star drag or lever drag) is set for how tight you want it when in gear fighting the fish. Adjust appropriately to line pound test. I wouldn’t give up quite yet!!!!

I don’t like buying reels that have the level wind mechanism on it. It’s cumbersome and they break real easy and it limits your casting ability for the larger ones especially. I much prefer to do the level wind myself using my thumb.

I do think that spinning reels with braided line and fluorocarbon leaders has its place in fishing especially In finesse techniques for freshwater bass but when it comes to saltwater fishing it's hard to beat old school Monofilament.

But I also like to fish for panfish on a lighter spinning reel setup with a braid to fluorocarbon leader bottom fishing rig. Of course I'm a multi-species angler so it just depends on what I'm fishing for at the time.

It’s likely Stainless steel wire used for trolling. The wire will get a lure or bait down quite deep for lake trout or salmon. Also used in the salt water boat fishing to catch striped bass and bluefish

I dont know why sometimes when i cast with a little power while the sinker is in the air my line starts lifting off the spool and sometimes it gets tangled. I use my thumb to keep the line lifting under control but it doesnt always work. Gonna go practice today i got 3 different mono lines to test. I want to see if one of them is more forgiving.

Welcome to surf fishing!!! Yes. I use mine at night. It just takes some getting used to in order to time it out when to stop the spool from spinning. Practice! Practice! Practice!!

Great question. You have to manually level wind it. I use my left thumb and while reeling in, holding the rod with 4 fingers and palm, the thumb on top moves the line slowly left and right. It’s cumbersome at first but after a while you don’t even realize you’re doing it. Becomes second nature

Hey bud - That can be tough. If your spool is wet, it will help a little but I would start with tightening your ball baring until you really get a feel for the reel. I burn my thumb from time to time. It's kind of part of the deal when long casting with conventional and braid.

sure - I have some reel lubricant that i use in gears from time to time but I will spritz with WD40 in between lubing. The best thing to do is rinse reels with fresh water after every use.

In terms of safety, the payload yer throwing MUST have a shock leader on the main line, where for every ounce of weight the shock leader needs at least a minimum of 10lbs breaking strength. It is Extremely easy to break even 30lb line on a strong cast with only a 4oz payload. Since the payload is inclusive bait plus weight, it really pays to go no less than a 50lb shock leader that needs to be long enough to wind 6-8 times around the spool, not counting the drop used off the rod tip. With a 10ft surf rod, this will mean about 30ft of shock leader. Shock leaders are mandatory requirements for tournament casting for distance. There are a number of good knots to tie mainline mono (typically 10lbs to 20lbs) to shock leader mono, this is my favorite - i.imgur.com/LUkkC5w.png - this is a small but very strong knot that will easily pass through rod guides. An open faced reel is a fixed spool reel, which is a spinning reel. The reel used in this video is a conventional reel, or multiplier, or revolver, or casting reel or bait casting reel. Most modern revolving spool reels have at least two or three adjustments = 1. The spool freeplay, which is a knob on the gear side plate or knobs on both the gear plate and end plate. It's only job is to center the spool within the frame (cage) of the reel. It is NOT a spool braking mechanism and if used as such the spool's spindle (the shaft going through the spool) and/or the spool bearings will become toast in short order. 2. Centrifugal friction brake blocks (2 to 6) on the spool that can be activated or removed to adjust the amount of spool control depending on payload weight, casting force, and wind. 3. Magnetic brake(s) within the reel that are external knob controlled. Magnetic eddy currents will force a metal (aluminum) spool to slow down in a friction less manner. The most important part of surfcasting is casting technique. After that comes the rod, the line, and lastly the reel. The above is about 1/10th percent of what one needs to know about casting revolvers for fish or distance ... or both.

I'm not new to using baitcasters I got that down, but I'm new to using these conventional reels, I just bought an off brand & haven't used it yet, my ? is that it doesn't have a magnetic braking system, just free flowing spool, will that result in more birds nest & will I still be able to cast out far without magnetic braking system? I plan on testing/practicing this weekend with the tension knob.

Good question. When you cast one of these reels, there is a bar in the middle, called the spool that spins. As the lure and line are going out, it is at the same speed as the spool is spinning. But when the lure or weight hits, the water and the line stops coming out the spool continues to spin unless you stop it. This creates the line on the spool to loosen but the line is not moving any more and it gets all knotted up. The only way to stop it from happening is to stop the spool from spinning with your thumb at the same time. Your lure hits the water.

@@feralgoat3771 yes. They can be casted. It takes lots of practice though. It also depends on what kind of rod you have. If you have a boat rod on your 4/0 then casting from the pier will be tough. And always level wind when retrieving your line whether you have a fish or just reeling back in

@@Ben-dw8ts Ok cool - I would definitely go with something like a Starr Rod or Crowder Rod. At least 8' - maybe 9 or even 10'. Longer the rod, the more leverage you will have for casting distance and the better you will be able to keep the line above the braking waves. You can probably put like 40 or 50 pound brain on a squall - ask the dude at the tackle shop. I wouldn't go lighter than 30 pound test. Using a 6 oz. pyramid or sputnik weight, you should be able to launch that thing! Good luck! let me know when you get tight!

If you're gonna cast conventional, you need a rod that's designed for a conventional reel. Technically speaking, you could mount a conventional reel on a spinning rod, but that's a bad idea for numerous reasons. The guides on a conventional rod are not only smaller, but they're mounted much closer to the rod to accommodate the lower profile of a conventional reel. For surf applications, conventional rods are usually rated a bit higher for weight than their spinning rod counterparts. If you're throwing 8 'n bait into a heavy surf, conventional is gonna be a much better option. All that being said, it's ultimately about getting the right equipment for the type of fishing you're doing. More often than not, a privately owned tackle shop that's got a good reputation with the locals is gonna be your best source for gear related information.

Coming from spinning reel.. i figure i would need to try conventional for surf fishing but im not sure whether i should stay left handed (because all spinner reel are left handed) you are casting right handed and it seems more natural to reel with your right hand and use your left thumb to distribute evenly the line.. but this require to switch hands after it lands.. but on a spinning reel, i find it more natural to use the left hand to reel probably because the spining handle makes larger circles and you don't need as much spinning. But im worry about battling a big fish with my left hand if i use right handed conventional.. should i just use those conventional that has auto left and right line distribution? I guess i will have to order a few on amazon and use their refund policy

Well brother, all I can tell you is that the more you practice with it the easier it will become. It does take time so don’t get frustrated. I would start with a jig master from Penn. Not too expensive. Get the right rod and put the right line. Then go down to the beach without plans to fish and just practice. Do that a couple of times and you’ll then start fishing. It’s only a matter of time

@@watchyourlip3209 ordered some random reel called Piscifun Chaos XS Round Reel . But i might also order the pen jigmaster. But i think the pen is a full open reel and you need to use your thumb to evenly roll the line.. other conventional reels do that for you and you donne need to worry about that. As for the rod, i still can't find a 12 feet 3 pieces . 2 pieces 12 feet don't feet my vehicle. I think only 9 feet 2 pieces can.. to fit the trunk i need 3 sections rod if i choose 12 feet rod. As for mono, i went with 20 pounds.. but i think it is too weak, maybe i should use 30 pounds mono?

@@reefgratos2035 the squider and the jigmaster are both excellent reels. The squider is a little smaller and maybe a little easier to learn with. The jigmaster is a bit more beefy though. So if you plan on fishing for big tarpon or jack crevalles - jigmaster would be preferable Are they brand new? Those sound like prices of new reels. If they are used, just buy new ones. They wouldn’t be much more at all

so the handle length isn't as important? It seems many spinning rods have longer handles (butt to reel length) even at 8 footers. But it is important the the rod can handle the weight and the line rating.

Hi great video and helped allot, I just got a penn 285 Multiplier, its a great reel but birds nests are a nightmare. I struggle to keep the thumb on the reel because the bars are in the way. I've taken the back two bars off now in the hope of seeing more line, should the line be wet to practice and can the thumb touch the reel edge rather than the line itself. Spinner reels (right handed)have lever on left side, eyes down, reel with left hand, and can usually change lever side. Conventional reels(right handed) have lever on right side, eyes up, reel with right hand, cannot usually change handle side.
