Kids having fun and an adult who monitors them safely. A rare youtube video. Thanks for sharing. Love how gentle the fish are returned. I was half expecting to see the fish "launched" back in. We'll done!

if you guys are crying over the kid holding the fish by the tail then consiter this... these are bluegill fish. look at their top fin. see how thick they are? ill tell you why they are thick, its because they are SPINES. these spines are coated with a very irritating mucus that, if injected under the skin, can cause WEEKS of swelling and pain. best way to hold a bluegill? use your finger and thumb and make a ring grab and slide the fish down the righ from head toward back, stop midway. as long as you grab tightly and keep the fish from wiggleing he wont prick you and you will have a firm grasp. but a child often does not have the understanding to hold tightly. so the 2nd best way is to hold it by the tail so that if it wiggles you can simply drop it without harm.
@KimberlyChisholmJustcallmeEll9 жыл бұрын
+max radke When I was a kid I held them by the mouth. Little fingers have no problems with that. When I got bigger I held them tightly in my palm like you suggested.

Blue Gill are EXTREMELY resilient!! I remember as a young child fishing in a very small pond on a friends farm and catching the same five over and over and over in the same day and they never seemed phased at all..... Those same five fish were caught hundreds of times in that summer... Now I realize the torture there, but I didn't at the time....
@bravohuey11 жыл бұрын
Not sure if it's been ID'd yet or not, but that big fella you caught first was definitely a Bluegill/pumkinseed hybrid. I've caught lots of hybrids down south but never that one as we don't have pumpkinseeds down here. I've caught bluegills with a hook tied to my big toe before but never like that. Tell the kids Great Job!

Oh, and: 1.tilapia is my favorite, too. 2. I had 2 CFL bulbs blow up only they weren't damaged before. happened abt yr. apart. After the second one blew, I got rid of all CFL--won't have 'em. Though I might try them in the greenhouse for winter. Am thinking LED is better. Wha do you think?

@BecherGaming It depends on the fish. The minimum I would use for a mature Bluegill is a 30 gallon. 40 gallon breeder or 55 gallon for a LMB but You would have to upgrade to a 75 when its at full size.

In my state you are allowed to catch bluegills any way you want. You can't keep them if they are over 5 inches if you don't use a pole. But the smaller ones you can. They breed 5 times a year and are extremely abundant so i don't know why they'd have any restriction. They do taste good but i think of them more as a baitfish than a gamefish.

killkick 177: here in the u.s. there are also many rules for fishing, both for fresh and salt water. sometimes every body of water has different size or amount limits for different species of fish! if u fish here, its good to get a guide book at a tackle shop, so u don't screw up. of course u need a fishing license(i'm talking about florida, don't know about the rest, except california) both for fresh and salt.

they aren't the same thing. yellow Perch (which is probably what you are talking about) are in the walleye family. There were no perch in that video, just pumpkin seed (in the net) and blue gill (in the bucket)
@dofishbuster12 жыл бұрын
In order to have bigger fish you could need to be harvesting some. Overpopulation will stunt fish especially those in the sunfish category (bream, bass, crappie). As it stands in my own pond we have a largemouth stunting problem if you want to call it that. We have lots of large gills and shellcracker which are fairly easy to catch and small bass that are too easy to get.
@kjm544811 жыл бұрын
Just as an fyi, the fish that was shown caught in the net was the pumpkin seed, and all of the fish in the bucket were blue gill. you switched the names of them around. I use to do this too. so much fun

That was awesome. You would need a lot of patient and food to trick the fish to come over to the net. Have you ever watch Man vs. Wild with Bear Grylls or Survivorman with Les Stroud? They catch their fish with a stick. The stick is shape into a spear.

to titusx19: a bluegill is not a pumpkinseed(different species). what u mean to say is sunfish. the sunfish family includes bluegills, pumpkinseeds, shellcrackers etc. even crappies and largemouth bass. don't get mad people, this info comes from a reputable fishery biology book, not from me! also good fishing method, no hooks!
@1ranger80011 жыл бұрын

Looks like fun for the kids, but this would be illegal here in Oregon. Chumming and netting, you get a fine and no fishing license for two years. We used to be able to chum catfish, use a light and fish at night for them. I'm pretty sure that all of that is illegal now.
@jerkisim13 жыл бұрын
That is a fishing technique that is called chumming. Basicly you throw bait or chum into the water so that the fish will "overcome their natural cautious nature". "Assorted types of chum are cat food, ground-up fish cereal dog food, and bread"

I can catch fish with nets with ease, an easy way is to dangle bait attached to a string a busy place, as a heap of fish attack it you slowly scoop them up I've used this technique to catch fish that in the aquarium are worth over 100 dollars, I catch many Butterfly fish, which in general are expensive, catch Whitebait, good bait for fishing and sever pufferfish, another aquarium fish

If you have a net you can also catch fish without needing any food. Just drop it in the water and wait 10 minutes or so. Then just pull it up and see what kind of fish you have caught simply by catching them while they're swimming over top of the net.

A very old lady taught me an abrupt way to catch fish. Now, mind you, I'll never get in another john boat with her. She scared the heck out of me. You see we were in this tank and this lady was just smiling ear ta ear-she was wicked. She had this bottle wrapped in old torn and tattered clothing and then she had this real heavy piece of something wrapped in some more cloth. Well she sprinkled these flacky pieces on the surface of the water, waited for a fish to come to the surface, and then she whacked it to death with this heavy pipe. Man-oh-man, she caught me by surprise and I almost fell overboard, besides that I got soaked and while I was coming to my senses, I looked into her eyes and asked if I was next? Well like "Geiko's Flo" she said, " you never know". Well the next time I saw here I told her "bank fishin was good enough for me". ATB, Jb.

I'm going to tell you guys a story and this is true. so I took one of those crab baskets that lay flat when they are at the bottom of the water and when you pull the rope it turns to a basket. well I didn't have a fishing pole in my back yard at the time but I had one of those because I tied chicken to the bottom and caught turtles with it. Now that day I saw one of the biggest bass I have ever seen swimming around so I threw that crab basket in the water and found some worms and threw the worms above it and the bass would come over the basket and I pulled it up after a few times I got him but I did not realize how heavy he was. he was about 5 lbs (not to big but big enough) and so when I pulled him up he bent the wiring that went all around the basket and flopped out. rip my dignity.
