You are required to take every clam you dig, regardless of it's condition. Pouring salt on a clam is the same as pouring one on a slug. It's not legal.

Where I used to live on the coast, people would clam and crab every year. Sometimes there were a lot, sometimes there werent. But it's been going on much longer than the twenty years I've been alive. And I haven't yet heard about the razor clams being in any danger.
