Absolute simplicity on a backwoods lake for backwoods gills. Seriously, there's nothing better

Our mill pond is blocked in and never really gets fished. My boy made it through a 36" road culvert with his kayak. Got on a sand bar when the gills were spawning. He caught two that broke my 11 3/4" gill record. Both of his were 12 1/2 inches. Mine were caught in mid michigan his were caught in southern michigan. These were all catch and release. He has now bested me on everything but a walleye, perch, crappie and pike.

What about shore fishing for bull gills with different baits both live and plastics?

Man I expect to see you go back to that place a lot. It’s perfect. I don’t know how you held back bringing the whole tackle box and seeing how big those bass are.

The bass we did catch were small. (and we caught a lot of them) Makes for an interesting population dynamic where there are tons of stunted bass and the bluegills are able to get big without predation. Thats one of the things I meant about a lakes potential.

Great video, what is your go to method of finding lakes like this?
@Wired2Fish4 жыл бұрын
I use a combination of satellite imagery like google maps or onX and DNR or Fish and Game population assessments. Some states provide information on passed population surveys for lakes that can give you an idea of the species and abundance. There is a lot of reading between the lines with that I will say and it takes ground proofing to see correlations but it will steer you in the right direction. That said, a lot of lakes are too small or too remote to have been surveyed so there is a lot of dice rolling with no good info. I have missed as many if not more times than I've hit a good fishery and they usually take two good honest efforts before writing them off as a no-go. The best ones are usually hard to get to and may not have a name or any depth and species info. Some are just minnow ponds with no game fish or a high bullhead population. This lake had a survey with little information but it did say it had bluegill at least at one time. Then you have to look at what predators if any are present (which can be important for controlling over abundance and stunting). A lakes fertility is also important, which you can gage by satellite imaging. Gives you an idea of emergent vegetation types and also the possibility for enough depth to support life throughout the year. A lot of fertile lakes are shallow which can mean they are prone to winterkill where fish lose dissolved oxygen and die off. This takes away the time aspect as most large individuals are slow growing. They also need to be tucked away enough where fishing pressure is light and those individual fish don't get harvested before reaching their maximum potential. I will also use Humminbird's FishSmart app or Navionics if the lake has been mapped.

Nice slabs. Agree with you that the pannie jumbos are sacred. Sad when you see a dope keeping 10 or 11 inch gills. Love the Merc running on propane. How long does a cannister last you on idle/slow speed running? I assume you keep a separate can in case you run out. Keep up the great vids!
@Wired2Fish4 жыл бұрын
You get about an hour of run-time per gallon of Propane if you're running wide open around 5k RMP. So a 1lb cylinder is appx .25 gallons and you can run two 1lb cylinders at a time with this configuration. So about half a gallon. Which equates to a half-hour running wide open. You can also just bring along a standard 20lb tank and get appx 5 hours of run time. Again, that's full throttle. I can catch bluegills but I'll leave to at idle RPM conversion to you or another math whizz haha! Thanks for tuning in David!

But can you catch them without electronics?
@Wired2Fish4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Didn't rely on electronics to find fish here so much but I do like to have them around to keep an eye on depth changes or weed patches that I may not have seen with my eyes. Also for storing way points which gives me an exact point of reference to come back to. So electronics are additional, not essential here. Simple as it gets catching them. Just toss it out and drift around or troll until you get bit..

Can you find a new restaurant or vacation spot without GPS? Of course you can. Electronics and GPS allow you to find those spots quicker. When you find where you need to be quicker, the longer you can spend there having a good time.
@Wired2Fish4 жыл бұрын
It does come down to time and efficiency. Sacrifice pure simplicity but if I wanted that I'd set a trap net and take a nap on shore.

Hope you do! Otherwise this little Jon boat set-up and my kayak have provided me with access to good fishing and fishability. I just cant get anywhere real fast! Affordable options though.
