How to catch giant perch!
Some of the largest perch in North America reside in the mountains of Idaho on Lake Cascade. In fact, just this year a perch weighing in over 3lbs was caught through the ice. However, once spring hits many don't know how to catch Cascade's famous gold. From late April to early June our favorite way to catch giant perch is to troll Rapala's in the shallows.
Follow along as we give you a step by step instruction on how to be successful fishing perch on Lake Cascade. And you can be sure that this technique will work for giant perch all over North America.

Thanks for the helpful tips. Does jigging, similar to ice fishing, also work for perch in the summertime?

Yep but starting about now fish will typically be a bit deeper off breaks or in those deeper weed lines. Sometimes those weeds can be hard to jig through so a “Lindy” type rig may be a bit easier to use.

@@OLDHATOUTDOORS I'm now living in the Tri-Cities area of SE Washington. I've had great luck using a rig my brother and I developed for the Columbia River. 3 - 4 feet behind yer typical bottom bouncer (walleye rig) we would take the spinner and wire assembly from a "Beetle-Spin", replacing the jig with two #6 short shank bait keeper hooks... one about 2" behind the spinner and the 2nd one another 3" further back. We'd put a 1/2" chunk of Canadian Night Crawler on each hook and troll exactly as we would for Walleye. No limit here... We've brought home over 90 perch one time! Of course, they're not monsters like you have in Cascade Lake. --- 9" - 12" --- 8" and smaller get tossed back. I'd be interested in seeing you try this method. As far as I know, no one else has ever tried it. (We selfishly kept it a secret... Now we're old and think we should pass it along)

About those pre-spawn big bellies? Unless you're eating the eggs, that's just extra guts that gets thrown away. -- A waste. -- My useless opinion is that you should let 'em spawn. More babies to replace what you harvest. Besides, these guys are cannibals. A lot of these Padawans, the Jedi younglings, become food for the Dark Side Monsters you're looking for. (Yes, these are the poyche you're looking for) But hey, I'm not a local and my opinion was framed by my youth in Michigan. We had a MUCH higher population competing for a limited number of fish. It was seen as "unsportsmanlike" to harvest females prior to, or during the spawn. Soooo.., take my opinion (and bias) with a grain of salt... I hope to enjoy fishing this lake for my favorite whitest and tastiest freshwater fish on this continent.., someday. (High on the Bucket List.. old, disabled, retired) --- You're "Living the Dream!" Those big perch had already spawned. This is fishing right after they dropped their eggs. You should see their belly’s in the winter just before spawn!

Have you fished the Gold Fork arm at all? Find the weeds in 10-12’ and fish Lindy Rig style with a worm.
