This vid is a complete instructional and tips for how to target Trophy Speckled Trout - aka Gator Trout. This vid goes through everything about gator speckled trout - like the best bait, the patterns, each month tactics, and how to locate these monster speckled trout.
In this vid we talk about each month and the patterns - obviously each region will have specifics that apply and Texas might be different from South Carolina - but there are generalities that apply to all speckled trout.
Speckled Trout main forage (bait) is mullet, menhaden (bunker), spot, croaker, peeler crabs, shrimp, and when they get to Gator size - smaller trout and anything they can fit into their mouth. That's why I compare these trophy trout to Chopper Bluefish - they are voracious feeders and are also territorial.
Most gator speckled trout will be caught in shallow water as they evolved to have darker backs, purple backs - and that allows these trophy fish to soak in more of the sun and conserve energy - and most importantly - bait.
Speckled Trout will also suspend in deeper water depths in and around schools of bait - especially in the dead of winter and in the dead of summer to find the most optimal water temp - not to warm and not too cold. They prefer upper 60s to low 70s is the prime water temp for these gators.

I been watching these videos for a few days, I had taken a trip to Carolina Beach to fish Cape Fear river and caught nothing but some 10 inch black drum and whatever those brown croaking fish are. Watched a couple more yesterday and went back down to Wilmington to try it again. Caught my first redfish! Around 18-20 inches long. Sure was thrilling after 30 little brown croaking fish. Such a big beautiful fish. Going back sunday to try it again! These videos are super helpful being in the same general vicinity. Keep it up! Maybe I'll get to try my hand at speckled trout next.

Our personal best speckled fishing in NW FL Gulf coast has been in Oct/Nov. My wife generally outfishes me from the kayak in the bays, I usually do better from the beach. But in Oct/Nov, we usually get more speckleds than everything else combined.

Great video. @19:00 yup. Big trout are often going to be cruising on the edges of a large school of smaller trout. When the school stops biting give it another five or ten minutes, and vary the retrieve. Always take note of the stomach contents of the size of fish being kept and the season. A limit of fish with the same stomach contents is a giant signal for next day trips or future years. The best advice I was too dumb to adopt when young was to KEEP A NOTEBOOK. Divide it into 12 month sections and take note by month of year&day, locations, weather, tide, moon, baits that caught, and stomach contents. An old timer showed me one of those when I was young and dumb, and I didn't take the hint. Regretting it now I'm old and dumb. O'course he showed me his redfish book, and not his trout book. He knew I didn't like redfish. heh.

I think some people see popping corks as either cheating, lazy, or something along the lines as fishing for bluegill. I strongly disagree with the negative ideas on them. Popping corks (any corks actually) have their place. They help keep bait/lures suspended to fixed depths, which helps keep them out of weeds and rocks, but more importantly (to me anyway) keeps them at specifically designated locations in the water column.

Thanks for the Tutorial! Hope to see you produce an instructional on using various artificial baits for catching Pompano from the beach. Also, would like for you to go into some depth as to exactly what is the difference between Pompano and Permit. Do they taste alike? They look almost alike. Thanks!

Can you guys do a video about fishing when you don't have a boat? Some of the places you have shown look like it might be on private property. Not everyone has the hook up. Look forward to some more content. Kevin from VA Beach

Great video, lots of great info. But as a photographer, shooting a video such as this. PLEASE put your camera on a tripod. It is very hard to watch you while someone is trying to hold the camera still and level. Just a thought. It will help your videos look more professional.

Man I really appreciate your content! I’m from Texas and currently visiting here in NC! Not used to clear waters and trying to learn as much as I can! Hoping to get on the water sometime this week down by Wilmington Beach area. I’m not sure of any bay areas here, if you could point me in the direction of a spot you think I should try I’d be more than happy! Don’t have the yak or much gear at all unfortunately but could definitely do a little wade fishing! Thanks brotha!
