⭐️ How to center your spins! ⭐️
Shhhhhh! It’s a secret!! 🤫
Ok no it’s not 😂 and for years I didn’t know how, my friends didn’t know and even some coaches couldn’t tell me!!
This video is actually made up of two of my KZbin videos: “Spin Doodle Theory” and “how to do an upright spin”.
Travelling is caused by turning too early. That early turn can be a result of many different things:
❗️Not tightening the curve enough
❗️Not bending your knee enough and at the right time
❗️Not waiting long enough
❗️Hitting your toe/rocker too early
❗️Twisting your shoulders on the 3 turn
These exercises can give you the right control on your entry to correct the entry curve problems.
⭐️ 2 things in mind:
🌟 Bend your knee towards the end of the entry edge
🌟 hold your right side (shoulder, arm, leg and hip) back for longer
(Left side if you spin the other way!)
Try it, let me know how it goes 👍🏼

I keep rewatching this. You're the only one who really breaks down a lot of the stuff that makes it centered. I still travel and can camel and sit and one foot and attitude spin but I think people hate me at the rink because they all travel.

Thank you so much for visualising the one foot spin ! As it is so difficult not to travel all over the ice or loose balance. I will definitly keep this in mind for next time ❤️

The second bend is a games changer, hope it works for you

@@iskatecoach would you call the second bend a push? Like the same kind that starts the spin? In the video it doesn't look like your leg bends to my untrained eyes

It’s more a pressure into the ice to aid the edge tightening. I feel a seconds press down into the floor, I wouldn’t describe it as a push, more of a press…

Feel the heel on the left foot as you push off?

Yes pressure towards the back half of your blade will help it run on a smooth edge for longer

Hi! I'm new to this channel, so I'm not sure if this is a dumb question of sorts, but I was wondering if there were any off-ice ways to practice centering? I have a spin board and balance board, if necessary, but I'm only 5% sure of what to do with them and was wondering if there were any exercises/routines I could practice off-ice. 😅 Thank you very much for your help!

Hey 👋🏻 so with a spin board I’d do some pivoting actions to start with and to help you feel centered. So place your foot on the spinner and scoot with little steps round. The goal is to keep your weight over the spinner as you scoot so it stays relatively on the same spot as it turns.

@@iskatecoach Thanks for responding! I assumed that's one of the only exercises that can truly help with centering (as most of it takes issue in edges and the ice), I just wanted to see if there was anything else I could do off-ice 😅 I assume the same methods can be used to learn a back-spin.

I don't know if you still reply to comments but I hope you do. I've been struggling with upright spins even as i'm landing my doubles. my right arm seems to be higher than my left arm and I end up traveling and looking like a mess.. My coach couldn't figure out why my arms always stand like that but it's not a posture problem as it only happens during spins. How do I fix this???? 😭😭

Hiya thanks for the comment. Sometimes this can happen as a compensation for balance, sometimes it’s the way the skater is made, and sometimes skaters are co platelet unaware it’s happening so I guess as you’re aware it’s a good sign! In this scenario I would use either an elastic resistance band long enough to provide a small resistance between your arms at full length OR a sturdy pole like a hockey stick or broom handle! Having the two hands linked like this makes you super aware of where the “level” is. You can visually see if your arms are not parallel with the ice and level with each other. The other scenario is if it happens as you pull in. In this case I’d try to pull in with a more balanced arm position. Also the feeling that your body stays still as you pull-up your arms to it, sometimes skaters lean towards the pull of the arms as it gets harder to pull in. Hope that helps!

@@iskatecoach hey thanks for the answer! i'll try using an elastic band i had for a while. i've also recently started to struggle with my axel again.. it seems like i forgot how to pull my knee up as i jump and i keep throwing my whole body forwards and end up landing underrotated with an awful mid-air position.. :(
