I watched your tutorial last year and it gave me the confidence to do it in the autozone parking lot- but after 30 min in the freezing cold, I couldn't get the bulb to actually "lock" into place, but it was *good enough* for a year. The other bulb (passenger side) went a few days back. I couldn't figure out how to easily access it, so ended up have a mechanic drop the bumper to get at 'em- I installed some LED low and high beams just in case- so hopefully won't have to do this again. anyway- thanks for buying me a year- great vid - super helpful.

Well done vid & informative. Found this vid shortly after my mother's 2009 Malibu right low beam need replacement. Just got done about an hour ago changing that "well engineered but no love for techs" head light. Was determined to try w/out pulling bumper/bumper cover. Accomplished my goal, two hrs+ later. Loosen wheel well housing & underbody panels to about center. My hands aren't huge but was it a challenge. Bout ready to call quits, the wiring is short, sheet metal walls is tight all around, & the biggest issue was trying to get the orientation correct w/two fingers & a push w/a screwdriver did the trick. So looking up under there, wiring harness should be seen. Engineers w/no hands on experience or real world application, pisses me off. Sure this was done on purpose on many levels($$$). Anyway, just wanted to let some know it can be done on right side w/out bumper removal but it may test your patience... Remember those tabs on those bulbs, largest is up top tilted a few degrees then insert, & twist slightly...

We changed the driver side low beam bulb but remove the right side bumper but next time if it happens I'll try your method. It was too late I installed of my lightbulb before I watch your video. Thank you and God bless

There is like a dozen or so videos on KZbin now regarding replacing the headlights of Chevy Malibus from the 2009 to 2012 models. There are hundreds of people online who have stated their frustrations with this design flaw and deep anger towards the engineers and executives at Chevy, too. It will literally cost you around $200 to have a mechanic replace the bulbs due to the hour or so labor. The only issue with this method is that it requires nimble hands and/or small hands. If you got big hands, this doesn't work. However, in the other videos mentioned, you can remove just a few things on the car and get access to the bulbs. If you got the basic tools and skill, you can do this replacement.

This is one of the dumbest thing for any carmaker to do, much less one that's struggling and wanting people to buy a Chevy! This is super helpful, but holy shit it is IMPOSSIBLE to get the headlight twisted into place once it’s in the housing. I know that I have it lined up properly but I can’t get the leverage to twist it and lock it into place, I’ve spent 4 hours and countless cuts and bruises trying to get this stupid bulb locked in. Whoever designed this car is going to be haunteddddd when I die.

You may want to add a very thin layer of lubricant on the bulb rubber to minimize friction while turning the bulb for installation.

This worked fine, but I'm not sure it's any easier than taking the bumper off! On my 2010 model I had to disconnect a couple wires to get my hand in but that was easy; the chunky plastic cube with wires coming out unclips by hand, and for the thinner one held in place by a nut, I just unscrewed the nut. This left me a lot more room.

Piss off to Chevy for making a typical simple DIY a major pain in the ass. It's Sunday head headlight went out on Friday the other one on Saturday I had time to check the fuses today Sunday fuses are good I don't have time to pull the bumper off so tomorrow I have to drive to work in the morning with no lights. Unless you have the hands of a 6 year old this technique WILL NOT WORK. So drop the bumper. I'm 5-11 180 lb and for 30 minutes just loosened the bulb I couldn't pull it out so I can only imagine trying to put it back in with the proper alignment this video was highly edited so anything can look easy after editing. Even the video of the 7 yr old taking the bumper off was edited it's not easy so thank you General Motors

Well today mu husband had to change the low beam drivers side head light! He tried your way, couldn't do it, his hands wouldn't fit! So what he did was just lower the left side number only. The headlight was done with 30 minutes. yeah!

worst car ive owned. found out it had no spare after blowing a tire on the highway. came with a pump/fix a flat combo thing that plugs into the cigarette lighter. chevy is trying to eliminate the "backyard mechanic" buying a "bailout era" GM car was a big mistake. 6 payments left and its back to a ford fusion. sorry for ramblin but this car is horrible.

Drivers side? YES,possible. Passenger side? NO WAY: pull the entire bumper off. The 2 10 mm bolts inside of the inner fender are difficult. I stuffed a 2X4 in there to gain access.

The is no access to the engine compartment to behind the passenger headlights. If you change one side, the other side is not far behind.
