As an aspiring mechanic, I love seeing and watching videos like this. One day I'll have a shop with a lift. Came across a 2009 Edge Sport AWD with just over 100k miles for $2k needing a PTU replacement. So I searched replacing one and came across this. I'm very familiar with vehicles, only being limited by not having access to a lift and my own shop. I love your attitude. Crappy job that takes some skill and a good attitude to accomplish. Kudos! Man that rust though.

yeah the rust up here in ontario with all the salt they pound on the roads in the winter just destroys these vehicles! but yeah just keep a positive attitude and always keep thinking about how to fix or deal with any issue that pops up and everything will be tickidy boo! 🤣 like my buddy always says...Man made it..Man can fix it! 🍻

I've watched a few videos of guys tackling this job and after watching you, I have the drive to replace the one my daughter's car may need. I was surprised you didn't remove the dogbone or the black crossbar and still was able to remove it. You're my kinda guy trying to see if it works out before taking loose a bunch of things. Super good video and explanation.

Glad it helped! there is a coupler in the rear end as well that can cause the diff to stay locked when it's not supposed to be...might have something goin on with that. I think they only sell it as an assembly though 🤔 im not 100 percent sure though hope that helps 🍻

Was the burnt fluid smell that gave mine away. Was the third mechanic that knew what it was just by the smell. The mechanic does the repairs on the state police vehicles, evidently the AWD Taurus has the same drive train and it is a common problem for the Taurus. Dealership had to replace a driveshaft seal when I purchased the vehicle, so I take it this unit could’ve went out due to the lack of diff fluid?

Thanks for the summer programming!! I got a 2013 Ford explorer sport with what I thought was a wheel hub assembly howl. Checked both front & rear and they are ok. Any ideas? Rear hubs were replaced at 100k checked both and no grinding like they felt when I did that job.
@rednecksdirtyhands
@rednecksdirtyhands Жыл бұрын
thank you! yeah usually a howl like that is a hub bearing but if they are just starting to dry out and make noise they can be hard to diagnose....you can try what I do and lift it in the air and spin each wheel by hand while you hold the suspension spring by that wheel at the same time.if that bearing is the one causing the noise you will be able to feel it resonate through the spring. it will feel smooth if it's not the one. giver a try and see, hopefully it helps ya find it! cheers 🍻

@@rednecksdirtyhands she had some oil in her but driving a dually like you stole it up and down the coast and back and forth from the mid west pulling a big horse trailer was insane. It smelled so back. The bearings was all blue. The housing was blue. The race was melted onto the pinion. It had a little oil in it but it was mostly mud and just burned to shit. I seen a few cooked before but this was above and beyond. I put it back together told him he was gonna probably be better off trying to get a used axle and changing it out. I didn't think I could get it apart without trashing the housing. Even if I could have the housing would have been the only thing left that wasn't trashed. I don't have a shop or anything. I was asked to give it a look at by a buddy of mine. I told him if he wanted to tackle it go ahead. I would do a axle swap but I ain't gonna even try to tear down that shit storm. The parts would be at least double what a used axle would cost. Maybe more plus the labor.

My wife's '11 started puking black, sludgey gear oil onto the driveway after long, hot summer drives. Crawled underneath to see evrything under the PTU drenched in oil. Funny thing is, both external seals are dry except maybe for a tiny drop at the bottom of the pinion seal. The little jiggly vent thing on top also feels completely dry... No fricken idea where ALL this fluid is leaking from, but its DEFINITELY gear oil. I tapped a drain plug into the bottom of the case, drained it, refilled with some Sea Foam Transmission stuff... drove a few K's to clean it up, then drained and refilled with Mobil 75-140. A few days later, it puked on the driveway again... And again, everything on the ptu seems dry besides the tiny drop at the bottom of the pinion seal. What are the chances the vent is plugged up with sludge and as the fluid heats, pressure builds until it briefly pops a seal, barfs some pressure off, and then retuens to normal?
@rednecksdirtyhands
@rednecksdirtyhands 4 ай бұрын
yeah seems weird eh! I mean it's possible the vent is plugged and it's pushing it out the seal..I guess I'd say check the vent and go from there..🍻

@JeffHorn-r1s
@JeffHorn-r1s 7 ай бұрын
If you should happen to try to replace or rebuild one, do yourself a favor and drill and tap a hole in the bottom of the PTU for a drain plug. FORD in their infinite wisdom only put a fill plug and breath hole in these units, setting them up eventual catastrophic failure. Living up to their name, Fix Or Repair Daily, I drilled and tapped mine at 125k like some others did on KZbin to avoid a $3,750 repair job. I'm no automotive engineer, but common sense says this is a poor design doomed and destine to seize up based on its location and the inability to add drain and replace the gear oil. My 09 Edge has a new lease on life and runs slicker than snail 🐌 snot.

Just did the job at the shop instead of dropping the sway bar and all that just wedge a block of wood between the subframe and motor then it gives you enough room to remove and install it from the bottom when the engine mount us removed the engine can swing out of the way lots don't squeeze it out of the transmission tunnel that's stupid
