An International Mobile station Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a series of numbers used to identify a device that utilizes terrestrial cellular networks, i.e., your mobile data network provider---each device should have its unique IMEI number. You can even go as far as saying that it is your device's calling card.
There are several uses of the IMEI number:
As the use of mobile devices increases, the statistics of stolen and lost devices have been increasing as well. Users can block stolen or lost devices for further usage if they know their IMEI number. All users need to call their network carrier and report that the device is stolen or lost. The carrier can block the specific device from running on their network and notify other carriers.
The 15-digit IMEI number indicates the origin and model of the device. The first eight digits indicate the device's origin and its model while the last six digits identify the device's manufacturer.
If you subscribe to a mobile tracking service, you can use the IMEI number to track the device---even if it uses a different SIM card.
Since its primary use is to identify a mobile device no matter where they are, many people are paranoid about secret societies watching over them. If you change IMEI Android numbers, many people believe that you will not have anyone spying on you.

Black view phones are having a major issue with large cell phone companies in USA rejecting the use of them. Black view released a code to enter in the phone to manually change your IMEI number to an old phone in your possession. It worked perfectly for me getting on the AT&T network after I was told my phone was not compatible. I used the IMEI number off my old AT&T Samsung Galaxy.

By any chance, do you have a video where you do the step by steps, or maybe show the process? Unlockmysim doesn't change your imei number. It just lets you change carrier. My LG device is blocked by At&t simply because they've decided to block LG devices from their network.

When a SIM card is inserted into an unsupported device and service gets activated or reactivated, it will send the IMEI number to the carrier. Depending on the carrier if they are strict, I believe T-Mobile is strict about it. They might say it's against TOS and your using too much bandwidth, but in reality they use that excuse in order to up sell you.

What if I assign an IMEI of a retired/dead device that has an acceptable IMEI to Verizon? I bought an android device from overseas and unfortunately, no network supports it. False. GSM works on a way that HLS servers use balck/white/grey listing on every new IMEI/IMSI connection and in case its not blacklisted (stolen, reported or unpaid etc) than if there is IMEI conflict it checks if the IMSI (SIM) is OK or not, if okay than the device gets accepted to the GSM network, so there are countless (illegal) devices witht he same IMEI on the global network but with "okay" SIM cards. Although, some providers may or may not filter for extremely bizarre IMEI/IMSI pair changes and may blacklist one by time. In Asia, IMEI change is legal...
