Trying to buy an aftermarket side marker, but I don’t have the arm you mentioned in the video. Would I need to purchase one of those to be able to install an aftermarket light?

You don't "need" it; as long as the connector is there it should work. Not sure if the arm is different across the pre/post facelift but this was done on a '17 US Spec BRZ.

They're not. The lights are on at all times, not tied with the harzards. You can get some that are but that's a lot of extra work.
