Changing diapers on a backpacking trip in bear country
1. Count daily diaper usage before trip-Determine the number of diapers your child uses and add a few extra to your pack just in case
2. Packing list-Diapers, wipes, dry bag/plastic bag, trowel, hand sanitizer/soap, diaper cream, bear can. You can opt to bring a changing pad, but we just use a coat or a towel.
3. Pack soiled diapers in your dry bag. Burying stool can help save space. Check local regulations before you leave. If allowed, it’s the same process you’d follow for yourself, 6” deep, 200+ feet from water. Do not bury any diapers or wipes, even if they are biodegradable. Pack it in, pack it out.
4. Store all soiled diapers, wipes, sanitizer, creams, and anything else you might pack with a scent in your bear can. Make sure to account for space in your bear can for used diapers.
5. Pack clothing that dries quickly in case you need to wash. We opt mostly for merino wool. A second pair of pjs/thermals is clutch to quickly manage a blow out at night.
