How to change diff / differential oil on Mercedes SLK 200 R170 2.0 5 speed manual 1999

In this video I show you how to change the differential oil on a Mercedes SLK200 R170 5 speed manual naturally aspirated 4 pot.

It has been running fine to date (10k in addition) and as expected meets/exceed the MB norms.

Just bought a slk 200K, from 2001, so will be changing the diff oil aswell. Thing i will take a wire brush to all that debris sticking to the diff before completing the job.

yup, makes life a bit easier, after doing that I did add some clear anti rust coating after, so just a clear paint really.

I’ve never had the nerve to do car repairs on a crowded public street so I admire your true DIY spirit. The oil for the rear diff should meet the MB235.7 spec which your oil in the video does not. Probably not the end of the world and certainly any gear oil is going to be better than the sludgey old stuff that came out. How many kms on the car?

Hey, indeed, finding the MB235.7 is fairly hard to do [in my area]., or from online retailer that won't charge a fortune, i.e. MB. I went with the logic: as this rating is old, these newer oils should meet or exceed it easily. Also, all the other diff oils MB offers sit in the same rating range. Additives would be similar, after all its a diff, so it should be just fine indeed. No pain, no gain. Just hit 198K Kms.

just hit 243 k KMs, and the diff is still purring along, so it likes the oil just fine.

I used a wire brush and Purple Power liquid to clean the areas around the drain and fill plugs. Keeps debris from getting into the gearbox. Same thing for the diff. Nice fluid collection bucket. Where did you find that?

chances are that'd be the same on yours. I know its quite a bit different for the automatic boxes. Just dive under the car and you'll be able to see if the transmission has a drain and a fill plug.

@@OrionBroadcasting oh yeah no for sure mine has a differential just like yours but i cant seem to find a video on the transmission oil change, do manual transmissions not have oil?

@@Mitutumuch yeah they do, good chance it will look exactly the same like on mine. But indeed not a bunch of videos out there, which is really the reason why I made this one. Was a real struggle to get all the info together. Sometimes there's a filler hose to the back of the engine heatshield (typically automatics), only one way to know for sure, get under the car.
