This video is a quick and easy Fuel Filter Change on the VW Passat 2.0l TDI.
Don't take it too the dealer Do it yourself it's very simple to do. watch the video and see how easy it is.. Cost less than $30 Canadian and maybe 10 Minutes of your time.
Tools needed
T20 Torx Bit
Screw driver
Paper towels
Power drill if you want too.
New Filter of your choice.
That's all ya need.

Had some work done on my TDI that I could not do on my own. In addition, they suggested I change the fuel filter. They quoted $220 and $150 for the cabin air filter. You just saved me at least $175 on the fuel filter.

All these comments about "priming" it the proper way, so not to run the HPFP dry. I didn't know this before swapping mine out, and when I went to bump it a couple times before starting it the engine started right up then shut off a few seconds after. I bumped it a few more times, then tried to crank it, it wouldn't start for about 8 seconds of cranking but fired right up. I let it run for about 8 minutes while I checked for any leaks. No problems, shut it down, and started it up a few more times to make sure all was well, and it cranks up immediately with no issues. So my question is this, if it's so bad to have done it this way, did I dodge a bullet? Or is the thought that there was some degree of damage that may rear it's head later? None of this makes any sense to me, if it's so bad, what about if someone had run out of fuel for whatever reason, the fuel filter reservoir would be empty anyway, and once they refueled they would go through the same scenario minus having added a new fuel filter. I can't imagine the design sucks so bad that even that would have the potential of ruining their HPFP. And if the thought is the HPFP needs lubricated, it's not like it's a brand new pump that's not covered in diesel already.

You do need to prime your fuel system, the cp4 pump that is in this car is very touchy and can be destroyed by the air you're pumping through it when not priming the system after having it open.

That's what bumping the Key does. You bump it a few times and then start it. Have done this with my diesel trucks too with no Issues.

@@doserdiesel a diesel truck has no CP4 pump from VAG... that cranking was to long. Ouch

I did this method also, but instead I cycled key on/off without crank about 20 times. It started straight away with less cranking than this but I think next time I will just prefill the cannister with diesel.

If you don't have a VAGCOM to prime the fuel system, try pressing the "start" button without having your foot on the brake to turn on the fuel lift pump, but not turn the engine over. Not sure if that works the same as moving a key start vehicle to "on" without engaging the starter. The point here is you need the fuel lift pump to fill the empty fuel filter canister w/o activating the high pressure fuel pump. VAGCOM is the normal way to run the lift pump according to VW. Yes, proper priming is important.

I have 2013 Passat TDI and would like to check if this procedure will work in my case, without having to buy a code device. I have a key (or dongle) start. So I leave my foot off the brake, and push the key in all the way as would normally start the car, correct? Then just listen for the fuel lift pump under the back seat. If I can hear it, then I can prime purge the air with a few cycles like that, correct? What are the risks if air remains in the line?

I don't think so, not sure where the Fuel filter is on thoes engines. I have never owned the Gas version of these cars.

make sure to fill the cannister up to the brim with diesel then put top back on if you have no vcds , cuts out cranking when starting , that was to long to kick in bad for car

Shop Vac sucked it all out! When you go to start the car again Bump the key a few times so it will fill the canister back up before starting the engine.

It is very good but it is better to put the diesel in yourself because if you do not have experience, if you purge all the lines you will have a big problem.
