Thanks for the video. Had no idea that there was a wiring harness to disconnect the door. I was dreading having to cut that and resplice all the wires. TYVM. Way easier than what I assumed.

Thank you, replacing my door tomorrow this helps. My door sagged for so long the latch broke free of the door and now must replaced. Now I know to replace bushing when it starts to sag.

I know this is an old post but there are options of a OEM pin or another USA made pin (on eBay). The Dormans are known to fail after a year or two. Good vid tho!

Literally was just looking on ebay for door pins and came across a set that looked super beefy I may end up ordering

That is accurate if you've replaced the door pin previously. The factory pin has a flat head on BOTH sides of the pin, which will require you to grind off one of them to replace with the pin show in the video. Also, my old bushings did not just fall out, I had to pound them out. Good video, but doesn't reflect an OEM pin replacement with a new one.

Very helpful video. In reply to your remarks about the fracturing bushings, the Dorman pin and bushing kit, p/n 38422, is not the same design as the factory parts: OEM bushing each $6.50 each (Jeep p/n 55074591, four required per door) and Pin $13.06 each (Jeep p/n 55076192, two required per door). The factory bushing is a thin steel formed flange lined with what looks like bronze screen with the screen impregnated with some sort of dense black lubricant. I can see why a cast bushing would never stand up in this application - the wall thickness of the factory bushing is only about .0625 inches (1/16") as the thickness varied by several thousandths. The factory parts on my wife's 1996 daily driver with 153K miles lasted 19 years

Thanks for the video. This repair worked two years ago when I first had the problem but now I find that the hinges themselves are so misshaped that once one forces in the bushing of the top one, the pin will no longer go in because the shape of the bushing has changed. Forced to order from Jeep completely new hinges, totally some $148.61. Hopefully once they come in and I put the door back together, that will be the end of it for a while. Fingers crossed eternally driving a 20 year old truck.

One recommendation I have for anyone looking to do this repair: Get OEM pins and bushings from the dealership. Cost me $60 to do both hinges, American made, and the originals lasted 10-15 years...So will these.

Thanks, for the video, as I now have an idea on how to take the door off and why the door is sinking in the first place. Also, a common problem with JGC driver doors is the hinge system on the door itself: the frame surface cracks whereby the hinges are not held into place. For mine, I have it in place with various washers and bolts; without it the door doesn't even close because the fitting doesn't lock into place with the body. I used to have a sorta pulley system with rope to keep it shut.

The hinge is bent. Mine was the same way. You have to straighten the ear out making sure the bushings sit flush with the other half of the hinge. The bushings will fall apart within a couple days when they’re bound up like that.

Thanks for posting Geo.. I had the nonstop repeating problem with one of the bushings. After watching this vid at 7:30.. It looks like one ear is bent. One thing I did notice when I was fixing mine. If you look at the Pin and look at the Knurl groves. When you drive the pin in. The knurl contacts the brass bushing.(found this after the bushing cracked again. I could see the knurl sticking up) I decided to make a washer shim (aluminum siding material .0235 thickness for the pin ) to prevent the pin knurl from hitting the bushing. I think the pin and bushing part was a good but if it keeps happening. Time to look at it closer. It's one or the other :) Thanks guys

Nice work! I have done the whole door once, not doing that again...too hard to match custom paint. Just scooped up 2 #38422's for my rig. Be doing that tonight whilst I wait for my $150 door latch from Lithia. Ahhh, Jeeps. Got to love them. thanks again, especially for the part number, don't want to have to kick the Internets ass tonight!

As you mentioned, those are not the OEM pins. The OEM pins have to be cut and punched out. This is a huge pain in the ass. I started out with a chisel to try and get it freed up. Then I started trying to punch it out , the way u did w that body hammer. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO WHOEVER IS TAKING OUT THE OEM PINS: You have to cut the bottom of the pin off and drive it out w a punch. I broke a cpl screwdrivers and sacrificed an old chisel to this little job. The chisel exploded and took out my window

My local repair shop wants $190 to replace the top and bottom hinge bushings and pins. (1998 Grand Cherokee). I wanted to see if I could do this repair myself and took a look at both hinges. The pin that you removed in the video has a large head on both ends, so I don't see how I can remove it unless the bottom or top head screws off. There's a number "3457" stamped in both hinges and mine are painted white to match the body color. I think my bottom bushing on the bottom hinge is shot - I can lift the door up and feel the play in the bushing. I looked at your video again and see your top hinge pin has the head on both ends that I'm talking about. I'd sure like to replace the bottom hinge bushings without removing the door but can't figure out how.

If the holes that the bushings go into are egged out even slightly you will burn through bushings alot. If you have access to a welder, build up the hole. If not, fill with JB weld then put the bushing in, that will help. without support behind the cast bronze bushing, it will crack.

Thanks for the video, I really appreciate you taking the time to make a quality post. My 1998 has the exact problem but it also has the metal that has the three bolts going through on the side of the door that has completely destroyed itself. I'm somehow going to have to either fabricate or weld some new metal to attach to the door. Have you had to do any work on the side of the door? Has it fatigued and caused it to crack because of the hinge pins?

Did you ever fix the wet floor on the Jeep. I had the same issue and there was a rust hole near the wheel well under the steering wheel. put sheet metal and rivets with some silicone and fixed the wet issue. If its not fixed everything on the floor starts to rust and it will become Flintstones car. Pull carpet off to make sure there are no holes on floor .

Mike... did they break again after you did this vid ? After reading Geo Stanley post.. It looked like one ear was bent a little..had to play and stop the vid to see the angle of the ear. vid at 7:30. Thanks Tony Just remembered, after installing the bushes.. I used a 3/8 to drill out the bushings because when you slide in the pin. It has a tendency to bind. I did this before sliding in the repaired hinge and pounding the pin in.

Howdy! nice work, I wanted to ask you, is your jeep a 1993 by chance? I have a 1993 grand laredo with the same danging problem and I would rather not send it to a shop to have a whole new hinge welded on. I have heard that the 38422 as well as the 38423 pins and bushings (the 38423 has a C clip:?) will work on 1993's but I am trying to verify this 100%.

The floor of both passenger side and driver side of my 1998 JGC Laredo 4.0L are soaked. The passenger side I think is mainly a clogged water cowl in which I need to drill a hole in the tube that runs inside in order to unclog it, as it mainly gets wet with AC on. The driver side must be damaged weather stripping along with a door that is worse than yours, as it only gets wet when it rains. I am going to a parts yard to get a door and associated factory bushings and weather stripping.

From the bottom it looks like there's a line where the pin comes through the bushing out the bottom of the hinge. It is a cap that's pressed on. Cut it off or you will be screwing it up and wasting time tools and a boatload of aggrivation.

Just so people know IF the pins and bushings haven't been replaced and are factory then they are peened over on the bottom and cant be just punched/chiseled out. The tips of the factory pins need to be ground down flush then punched out,, BE CAREFUL GRINDING Just a tip, spend the EXTRA $$$$ and get the QUALITY SS pins and bushing for 56.00 from Ebay and do the job ONCE, I did mine Today, way too much work to keep doing over and over to save a few bucks initially

pin didn't fit right because the top part of the hinge was bent. the pin was following a crooked hole. probably why you're burning out bushings.

Your top door pin is the STOCK door pin, you have to cut the pin in half if you want to change the original pins. I used a Dremel with a cut off wheel TO CUT IT IN HALF. The original pins came with steel bushings not brass like after market they crack, very heavy door. Your bottom one you changed already or somebody did ? Those you show how to change in this vid. You should have greased the bushings at the least oil ? Cleaned up the wheels on the door & oiled or greased them ? NO WONDER IT KEEPS BREAKING, YOU'RE RUNNING HER DRY, NOBODY LIKES IT WHEN YOU INSERT ANYTHING DRY ? I bet it makes a HELL OF A NOISE LIKE DEANS IMPALA ON SUPERNATURAL. Never understood that ? Dean cared so much for his BABY 67 502 INCH BIG BLOCK IMPALA BUT HE COULD'NT ADD OIL OR GREASE THE DAMN DOOR HINGE PINS ? IT DROVE ME KRAZY WHEN HE GOT IN OR OUT OF HIS BABY BIG BLOCK IMPALA , SQUUUUUEEEEEEEKKKKKK, COME ON GREASE THE HINGE DEAN, DAMN.
