Its finally time to change my jointer knives. I have been putting this off for quite some time. I made a simple magnetic jig to hold the knives at the proper height. It worked pretty well and now my jointer is ready to go and cutting great.

My little jointer or buzzer as we call them sometimes here in NZ, has little springs below the blade backer so need to be careful not losing them as they can easily fall out and get lost. I use magnets too but mine are rectangular magnets and simply bigger so they span the gap by themselves and reach both the infeed and outfeed tables. Still, even when the new blades are held up, when I tighten the nuts the jointer rotates a bit so it’s not perfect but with patience so far I have found this to work quite well. I double check with a board with two lines marked on it…first line is the edge of the outfeed table, push the board which rotates the blades and see if at top centre the position is at the second line.

Great video. Helped me change my knives much more easily than expected. My planer/jointer is 13 years old and like a couple of others, the three little springs are loose and need to be removed as each blade is removed. Thank you, thank you!

I have one w springs under the knifes too. Did you get rid of the springs? I want to make this jig and throw out the springs.

I like your homemade magnet jig. Point; as long as you have all three knives at the same height across the table all you have to do to illuminate that snipe was to adjust your outfeed table minutely until there was no snipe. Remember your knives have to be all the same height and parallel to the outfeed table. I’ve done that for over 50 years so I know it works. Best to you

super useful. using your build as template for building a similar jig and inspiration for not throwing (pushing) the machine out a window (into a corner). i know it's been four years since this video was posted but perhaps the next project should have been a woodworkers take on a DIY hands free overhead camera tripod/mount?

Great dedication, with it being that cold in your shop. Next project needs to be a heater.

I have a small one but when its single digit temps, it cant keep up. So then I freeze. Lol.

This is the best video I’ve seen so far on this topic. Thanks for posting. Update 2 years later. I made this jig and it works great. I almost wish I used slightly weaker magnets ( I guess I could have recessed them a bit deeper into the wood, next time). It could be different planers work differently ( I can’t imagine how though). In my experience the knives should always be level with the outfeed table ( as you mentioned).

That was a very good jig and fairy easy to make. My knives need to be changed, but always been a bit weary to do it because of the set up for the new knives. But after watching your vid, I'm gonna have a go at it. Thanks for a very informative vid. :)

Thank You. I wish I could install a wood stove. It would be great. The heater I have in there cant keep up when it is single digit temps. Spring is coming.

If you didn't snug those blades down or forgot to could one of those blades come flying off when you turn that on?
@homebuiltshop
@homebuiltshop 5 жыл бұрын
Well my friend, I suppose something bad would happen if you forgot to tighten them up. Hopefully you have the guard back on before you turn it on. I think something would become jammed up pretty quick. I hope I never do that.

I think the jig don't have to be that tall. The ones they sell are shorter in height. It would help with installing.

what is the size of the magnet?
@js3217
@js3217 Жыл бұрын
So why don't you just make the jig with a larger magnet, a larger block of wood, and clamp them in place so the head doesn't move at all while you're re-tightening the bolts?

You can. I am not going to sharpen these. There are too many nicks in them. I think I'll make a small knife or something from them.

Dude, wear your gloves for installation. I’m typing with my middle finger as I had to have 5 stitches on my index finger and cut a slice off my thumb. Tightening knife #2 of 3. Job isn’t finished yet as my hand needs to heal before I very hesitantly will tackle the job. Bummer!
