How To Change Mac Address In Kali Linux | Macchanger

MAC address spoofing is a technique for temporarily changing your Media Access Control (MAC) address on a network device. A MAC Address is a unique and hardcoded address programmed into network devices which cannot be changed permanently. The MAC address is in the 2nd OSI layer and should be seen as the physical address of your interface. Macchanger is a tool that is included with any version of Kali Linux including the 2016 rolling edition and can change the MAC address to any desired address until the next reboot. In this tutorial we will be spoofing the MAC address of our wireless adapter with a random MAC address generated by Macchanger on Kali Linux.

You "briefly" mentioned that this specific mac spoofing is most effective for only LAN or wifi networks (home, school, etc.) But it's really not practical for hacking over the internet. I believe you should do a follow up video (maybe a part 2?) explaining the importance of this! From the looks of some of the comments... Newbies don't understand the difference and they really need to!!! If your Mac address didn't change first you have to put your wifi or ethernet adapter down and then change the Mac address it definitely works and don't forget to up the adapters

its because you are not login as owner (root) (kali linux 2020.1b) So use sudo macchanger -a eth0

You have to shutdown down your interface card before trying to change its mac address , not changing it directly , to do that type the following command *Ifconfig wlan0 down* *macchanger -a wlan0* or whatever your option is *ifconfig wlan0 up* Note : in my case my nic is named wlan0 , yours can be different To check it , type : *ifconfig | grep HWaddr* Hope this helped :D

so what i know about mac addresses is that its how people can kick you out of their wifi network connection. so with the spoofing or changing idea i want to know is it possible to clone mac address of the admin of the wifi network you are connecting to? to the point where they cant disconnect you or cant tell you are connected because your mac address is exactly the same as theirs. im referring to an xfinitywifi hotspot type of wifi connection. also how do i find the network admin's mac address

Sigh...i wish people would share solutions more in this channel but... The one you used for example: macchanger -a "the one you used" is currently active or "busy" (as the error message states) To fix this: Ifconfig "the one you used" down Example: Ifconfig wlan0 down This should fix the problem

Maybe its some kind of hardware incompatibility... ive seen lot of people having the same problem on wlan adapters and i havent spoted any resolution yet.

Macchanger does not work anymore on Linux. You can change address but the same time you get disconnected from network. When you reconnect to network the original mac address comes back. The best option is to buy few USB wireless cards and use them as they are needed.

I should have written it does apply to Ubuntu 16.04. I tried some changes as others described on internet to that problem and those solutions did not work. Mac changer still works on Kali Linux. I think Ubuntu is going gradually to toilet as windows OS.

@@georgewashington90 Well Ubuntu was made to be more noob friendly to new Linux users. Kali Linux was purposely designed as pen testing OS. I think the reason why Ubuntu sometimes does not want to function correctly is probably because it's configurations weren't set correctly

Also to add on, when you state that macchanger does not work on Linux anymore, you're reffering to all Linux OS's which is incorrect. Each one is designed differently from each other (i.e. Kali and Ubuntu). Macchanger currently works for me using Kali Linux.
