Just got back from the Mitsubishi dealer here in Japan with a bit of information you all might find helpful. Although it's cheaper and pretty straight forward draining and filling the CVT fluid yourself, almost half of the fluid remains in the transmission when you do it that way. At my dealer(I'm guessing all Mitsubishi dealers) when they change the CVT fluid, they change all the fluid using a machine they have there which comes out to about 8 litres of dirty fluid pushed out. So although more expensive your CVT fluid will be completely changed, instead of a only a bit more than half if you do it yourself. Which makes me wonder if your CVT change interval suggested by Mitsubishi at 30,000km for severe use, will technically drop down to 15,000km if your only doing it yourself and leaving almost half the dirty fluid left inside. Personally, I choose the dealer for regular CVT fluid changes as I want completely clean fluid. But for changing the cooler and pan filters, I say do it yourself to save money.

If you have a high mileage car or plan on keeping the car a long time, don't forget the CVT paper filter located underneath the battery, and also another filter located inside the CVT fluid pan. Longer job but probably should do it every 100000 miles or so, even if you follow the severe CVT fluid change interval.

Quan, I gotta ask: How does your Lancer have CVT and what appears to be factory turbo-boosted engine? I thought Lancer came in either: Evo, Ralliart (smaller turbo, still based on 4B11T, but transmission should be a dual clutch SST, not a CVT), GTS --> Stepping down from the Evo, this is the first model where CVT is available, but this does not have turbo. SE/DE/etc --> these do not have turbo. I think after 2012/etc CVT is available on these models. Did you add the turbo yourself? I have a 2010 GTS CVT (2.4 Liter engine, based on 4B12, cylinders not sleeved). Considering to put a Ralliart turbo into it, is why I am asking.

And why the suggestion to not bother w boosting this car (GTS/CVT)? Mine is also the Sportsback. In hindsight, I would have loved to get the RA sportsback, but didn't realize that model was available. I like my current vehicle, duly loaded. Just would like a boost of roughly 30~50hp.

@qdao167 жыл бұрын
BJ Johnston don't overfill. Just fill as much as you take out. Keep in mind to check the fluid when it is hot. It should be exactly at the top notch. I recommend driving around for 10 mins after filling to about 4.5 quarts then top it off while the engine is hot and running.
@bjjohnston28687 жыл бұрын
Quan Dao thanks for the timely reply. Man you should see our transmission pan. It's so rusty... Must be the winter's up here in Canada. I ended up calling Mitsubishi. And they said that you can get anywhere from 4.8-5.2 quarts depending how long you let your pan drain and the incline angle of your car on stands etc... We bought five because that's what they suggested. We put 4.5 in and topped up and put the whole fifth quart in. It comes to the middle line on the dipstick. My dipstick has three notches on it. It's at the middle notch when hot. But when I was disposing of all the old fluid I filled all the five quarts up and still had a couple hundred ml in the oil pan. I don't want to buy another quart of 20$ fluid if it's within specs. Hoping someone has the same dipstick as me. Thanks alot for the video aswell. I was going to do a video for the sway bar end links and sway bushings but it's getting colder up here. Not a lot of videos on these cars so thankyou.

Its light green when it is new. After a couple runs it will mix with the remaining transmission fluid inside the unit since you aren't flushing it. It will then be light brown. Once it is past 30,000 it's dark brown and the transmission will start overheating and whining means you need to change it.

@jack765ful6 жыл бұрын
Nvision, if you're experiencing slip, STOP driving the car immediately. Call/ask the last place you had the fluid changed - inquire if they used CVT fluid, or if they mistakenly put ATF into your CVT hardware. ATF fluid into CVT hardware will ruin your CVT. One fluid is meant to slip, the other fluid is meant to assist with grip.

Juan Zamudio well here is my story. I changed my cvt at 50k miles from oem to valvoline. I didn't have any problems with oem fluids at all @ 50k miles. Reason why I decided to change out the fluid was because you're suppose to change the fluid for our cars at 30k interval. So after the new fluid change I drove the valvoline to 20k miles (70k miles) then I started to hear whinning noise. So I changed my car fluid again to valvoline because it's the cheapest option. Again I start to hear whinning noise at 90k miles. This time I decided to listen to everyone on the forums and use only eneos or oem fluid. As of right now my car hasn't been as silent since stock fluids. I get noticeably better gas mileage as well. Like +3 miles per gallon.

Once I go over 80 mph on mine within 10 min it starts making a whining noise and if I keep going for another 5 minutes and I come to a stop and I press down on the gas all the way it won’t accelerate at all and I get the slow down message ,does this mean I need a new transmission or just change the cvt fluid? Badass ending btw 😂
@qdao166 жыл бұрын
Marcos Maya that's normal. Change your fluid. Use OEM only

Marcos and Carlos, This means your spirited driving has put your CVT into overheat. TCM is trying to save the transmission by forcing you into a kind of limp-home mode, so you cannot put so much power through it. Known long-term solutions include changing to a bigger transmission fluid cooler, or even going with one that has a fan attached to it. Take a look at Hayden's model 526. The factory cooler is installed just in front of the left (USA driver side) front wheel fender guard. That location in the engine bay is too far from the grill, does NOT get any ram air, so the cooling efficiency is horrible. In my journey to turbo my GTS CVT, my first stop is to do exactly that - improve CVT fluid cooling.
