How to Change Oil in a Jackson 6700 Tamper

Will show and tell you about the engine and hydraulic pumps on my
6700 tamper along with how I change oil in the tamper. I've taken very
good care of this tamper since I started operating it 18 years ago. Tampers
are very high maintenance machines as you can imagine.

I worked for a car dealership in the early 80's. We had a customer bring in a dead pickup and when I opened the hood, a little black and white kitten meowed at me. (Instantly named Carburetor) We called the customer, they didn't have cats. He was placed in a box on the parts counter and in less than an hour he had a new home.

So cool, Dave, "hanging-out" with you as you serviced the tamper. As a trucker of 33 years (and counting!!), it was neat getting an "inside look" at a Cummins industrial engine...so now I know what makes those ballast-grabbing tines vibrate and "do their thing"!! Dave you are the cat's meow! When they tore down shea stadium in NYC they found 37 😺 cats. They brought them to the new stadium. Hence no rodent problem.

Work day. Working the equipment or managing the maintenance. With all the electrical, I never wash under the hood. I may use an air hose. Good job Thumbs up 👍

Your right Clarence, when I did pressure wash the tamper, I always tried to stay away from all the electrical and limit switches on it. Way in the past we had limit switches fill up with water from pressure washing. Thanks so much for stopping by and may you have a very good day my friend.

The little Cummins B series. We ran those in a few sand and gravel equipment. Had a 4 cylinder on an 80 foot stacker driving a 30 inch wide belt. Hydraulically driven. The engine went 65.000 hours before needing an overhaul. That engine was amazing. Running full throttle for 12 hours a day. It outlasted several hydraulic pumps, radiators, and countless conveyor belts.

Had a Cummins mechanic do a bit of a repair job years ago on this engine and he told me pretty much the same thing Pete, that model of engines are extremely long lasting and tough to tear up, except when you run a regulator into one..... :-) Thanks so much for stopping by and may you have a very good day my friend.

I bet the company was happy with the guy that was running the regulator that hit the tamper. I managed to tear some equipment in the mines and the superintendent wasn't my biggest fan. I broke a scoop slick in 2 once at the center pivot and folded a brand new Mac 8 mantrip like a taco in my first year on a scoop. It's a thousand wonder's the boss didn't have a stroke or fire me one!

@@ccrx6700 I was one of those guys that got stuff done and didn't need someone holding my hand to do it. The mine foreman loved me to death for that. It didn't hurt I was greedy and volunteered for every hour overtime or holiday shift. I did however cause the superintendent to have high blood pressure from time to time when he had to write a big check to replace what I broke. I'd say the foreman and our miner man that had been underground for 35 years had a lot to do with me staying there. The miner man saved my tater several times in more ways then one!

You need to name the cat Coal. You should write the date and hours on the oil filter just so u dont forget. Most construction guys always write the info on the oil filter

Looks like momma cat has got to like you now and knows you like animals. Did cats go on the payroll on your railways, we had cats on ours their pay food and a safe place to sleep their work to get rid of vermin. Last one I knew lived in a box in the ticket office, there was one had a locomotive named after her not far from me and a facebook page. I think they got another cat now after that one died. Model update Great you showed the waste oil tank detail and a bit in the workshop, I am hoping to start on the other end of the line soon after having a new window fitted the other week and done some decorating.

Cat's and kittens are mint. I've got about 11 when they are all here. Most of them are quite feral. I only started with 1 then she had kittens then her kitten had some and the mother had another 2 lot's and took them up to 13👍❤️💛💚

Ran Cummins in my forestry gear both 6BT and 4BT, the 6 cylinder engines would run 9000 to 12000 hours in the tree harvesters at full throttle. They were inexpensive to replace or rebuild. The last 4 BT ran 19 years from new until I sold the machine, never replaced or rebuilt. Not sure of the hours, but one Rottne forwarder with a 4 cylinder Iveco engine had 34,000 hours on it when I sold it. The operator who put most of the hours on that machine was meticulous on maintenance. As always a great video, thanks!

I'm very pleased with the engine in this tamper Zulu Bravo. Cummins mechanic was in here years ago for a small fuel problem and he went on about what a great engine these were and long lasting. He said the military uses them a lot cause the guys can't tear them up. Not much excitement in changing oil, but your right, it is a most critical of tasks that must be done if you want long life out of this engine. Captains log; Star date 2024; Changed oil and filter in tamper... While working in engineering, 3 furry tribbles were found playing and having fun..... LOL.. I'm thinking, those cats, the mother probably showed up their looking for a safe place to have the kittens trying to stay away from racoons and skunks. If you're people are putting food and water out, Id bring it in at night because the racoons will start showing up in ever increasing numbers eating up the food. Skunks too. I always bring the cat food in at night. I doubt the cats will do good if given a home if they are feral, at the least the momma cat, the kittens might if they get human contact but when winter comes its going to be hard on them. I hate to see them find their way into a locomotive or some other machinery and have something bad happen to them. I also don't recommend calling the county animal control because they might gather them up then put them to sleep. We have had issues with our animal control here doing that and they have done a good job of making the public hate them. Cats have a real hard life on the streets. They get cat HIV, lung infections and tooth rot in addition to fighting other animals. I have to keep blackie away from the other house cats because he has cat HIV, is very unfriendly to other cars and his lungs are severely damaged. He cant even hiss right anymore. In about 6 months I have to take him in and have his teeth removed. People really have no idea why its important to keep their house cats inside. Cats get lost, become strays and then if they aren't fixed they give birth to cats that are then totally feral. House cats being allowed to roam the neighborhood is still not a good idea because even though they might come back, if they get into a fight with a feral cat, the house cat then catches cat HIV and whatever other diseases the feral cats have. I don't mean to preach, this is a really sensitive subject with me as you might know already. All of my cats are rescues. Of the 2 feral cats I was taking care, blackie and Ms Limpet, blackie is sick and Ms Limpet has disappeared. She's been gone for months now and I suspect she was killed. Miss Limpet is the grey long hair in my video a cats tail. D

Your absolutely right about leaving the food out David, we had a bunch of cats here years ago and the skunks and coons came and were so bad had to get a professional trapper to come in and eliminate them. Wife feeds the birds here, coons starting coming knocking down her bird feeders every night. I trapped or shot 10 coons. She asked me why they kept coming every night, I said cause you feed them every night. Started bringing in the feeders at night and the coons left. Your right that mom cat just showed up one day and the guys started feeding her. At least they will be able to get in the warm shop during the winter, but before long there will be an over abundance of cats and kittens here. Interesting how you do maintenance on your equipment, i would venture to say that most of the big roads dont do that! And if they do, its out of necessity than anything else.

Good to see you have some "Mousers" :-) If you ever see Puss give you a 'Slow Blink,' give her a slow blink back! This is cat language for 'Hi, I'm a Friend and I want to be friendly.' Exchanging slow blinks is a bit like shaking Hands for people, if you slow blink at her, she will probably reply! Another thing, if you happen to have an animal charity not to far away, it might be an idea to see if they will neuter her, then release her back. That way she will not end up having litter after litter of kittens, year after year but can still live where she is used to. She looks quite young herself.

It’s really in those cats best interest to call animal control to trap them and neuter them and possibly adopt them out. If left in the wild they will just breed and breed and lead very difficult and short lives. I love all your videos and you apparently are a very kind and caring man, please consider this. it is good to keep up on P.M. work on the units you run, on top of that just by sound you can tell when something is a miss. that was neat the 5-gallon pail of oil added all at once! yes it would be nice to clean off the build up on your tamper! did that fool that put the anti freeze in the heater get disciplined? the oil burners do work well, but putting ethylene glycol in will make a mess and it does not readily burn like used oil.

Thank you Chris. All in a days work. Hydraulic oil hardly ever gets changed but the filters in the hydraulic system get changed about every 1500 hours. Appreciate your checking out the video my friend.
