Damn, that's almost exactly the same as 2015 Prius oil change (I recently exchanged a 2015 Prius for a 2017 Prius). It uses the same oil filter removal tool and same paper oil filter insert. I'm not complaining (actually think its a good thing) but I find it a bit surprising they redesigned the whole car (2016 was model redesign) but kept the oil change almost exactly the same (right down to the specialized oil filter removal tool). Love Toyota engineers/designers, they keep it simple and don't make things unnecessarily complicated like some other car companies do.

2 questions. 1. Is there a specific reason why you use the Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil instead of the Mobil 1 extended life synthetic oil? 2. Would you consider switching oils a bad thing? I’ve taken my 2017 Prius to different locations that use house brand oil from the previous locations.
@RANDOMFIX6 жыл бұрын
Ab De Jesus, on you 2017 Toyota Prius I would just stick 0w-20 full synthetic not the extended mobil 1 as you are better off just saving your money and changing your oil no later than every 10k miles. With the Prius the oil will not look really dirty at 10k miles so make sure that don't make that mistake of going off your visual inspection of the engine oil.I have used house brands on my Prius and never had any issues. I currently I'm using the value oil amzn.to/2BNpAjAand don't notice a difference and I have 68k miles on 2016 Prius as I change my oil on time. Best of luck and if want to save some money try sucking the oil out every 7.5k miles through the oil dipstick (takes two minutes) and then changing your oil filter every 15k miles. I do it all the time on my 2010 Prius and it has 100k+ miles and still drives great. _RandomFix

I do recommend synthetic oil and I change my oil at 7500 miles. The Prius needs 0w-20 oil and that oil is impossible to find in a nonsynthetic form. Have you watched my video on just sucking the oil out of the Prius? hi, greetings from Italy. This footage is very well made, I kept watching it, but DIY is actually not allowed, otherwise the warranty will become not valid. And here they offer 10 years on traction batteries. Not to mention that if you calculate the cost of oil and filter and the hassle of a proper disposal of exhausted oil, the final cost of an authorized isn't too expensive

Stefano, are you saying you can't change your own oil in Italy? _Randomfix
@stefanobentivegna4 жыл бұрын
@@RANDOMFIX actually... yes. I mean, I have just purchased my 2020 Prius, but it will be delivered in March (I hope...). Toyota doesn't allow any unauthorized intervention until the warranty is valid. On the other hand, when the car will become old, very few people here have the facilities (like a garage) and the proper know how to solve some minor problems of their own cars, and the dumps in my city do not accept exhausted motor oil or worn tyres if you are not a registered mechanic. Besides, if you consider that the annual check at Toyota workshops isn't expensive...

Daniel, Lucky the Prius has dipstick you can just pull out and inspect the oil. However, given the past history of the vehicle (salvaged Auction purchase) I would just recommend changing the oil (less than $35 if you do it yourself) + you will get a chance to inspect the undercarriage of the Prius. If need any specific information about the Prius oil check amsoil.com for oil viscosity / amount of oil / oil filter torque specs.

What if you leave your Prius idling a lot with AC On etc. like for car camping. Should we change the oil even sooner? Go by the amount of hours of use instead of miles? This engine is technically a generator right? Don’t they change oil for generators by the amount of hours used? Also what other maintenance is required? Spark plugs? Transmission oil change? Coolant fluid changes? I’m trying to decide between a 2020 Chevy bolt or a 2020 Prius. Not sure I want to change oil anymore. Looks easy though.
@RANDOMFIX4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joel, I the prius is solid. If you run your ac a Lot while camping you should change the oil more often than the 10k miles. I only change the oil every 10k and the transmission fluid at 100k. I will do the spark plugs probably at 150k miles and the brakes are still at 70% at 100k on front. The prius is low maintenance and you will find a lot support of after market parts vs the volt.
@Catman17984 жыл бұрын
RANDOMFIX I mean the Chevy bolt the all electric one. Does the Prius go slow on the highway. Do you get tailgated a lot? I need power which is why the bolt appeals to me but toyota reliability is hard to overlook.
@RANDOMFIX4 жыл бұрын
The prius is not slow but if you want lots of power to run equipment while camping It will turn on every hour or so to recharge the ev battery and the 12v battery. The prius is a proven vehicle and while it's not a complete ev it's a great in between. A 30 dollar refill goes about 600 miles. Great resale value is an added perk.

I have committed to changing at a maximum 7,500 miles until I hit 70k and then I'll be at 5k intervals. I am still considering 5k intervals based on my next oil change and the condition of the used oil. Buying Costco 0W-20 (it is the same manufacturer as Amazon and Walmart, Warren Distribution) for under $2 a quart (on sale) plus OEM Toyota filters for less than $5 in multipacks on Amazon... Well... Definitely big savings over $75 at the dealership (but they do check other things) and $55 at Walmart where they ruin stuff... I was hoping to see a trolley or floor jack used. I have the Rhino Ramps but the Prius wind dam caused problems on my last change and I would prefer a straight lift. CHANGE YOUR FLUIDS EARLY - Federal government-imposed regulations dictate 10k miles between oil changes, it is NOT what a good, independent engineer would say. The unintended consequences of these regulations is that more cars will fail at younger ages/lower miles and create a whole mess of pollution through less efficiency as the car slowly breaks down or even worse, the loss of use of the vehicle.

Exactly, I too would pay more but what I'm finding out is more car owners are doing minimal maintenance and instead trading their vehicles and enter greater debt and large loans. Why would you change the oil your oil yourself on a 2016 prius I would assume it would invalidate the five year warranty?
@RANDOMFIX6 жыл бұрын
Jason, Great Question. Yes, the Prius comes with a 5 year /60k miles powertrain warranty. However, changing your own oil will not void the warranty. I worked as a General manager at car dealerships for 18 years and never experienced an issue. But if your vehicle is gummed up with burnt oil / or has no oil in the motor the manufacturer may try to void the warranty because of neglect. I can change the motor oil in my Prius in about 10 minutes with a total cost of about $19-$20. It takes me longer to drive to repair shop/ check-in/ waiting for the mechanic to perform the oil change /pay the bill /then drive home. Also when I change my own oil I can make sure it is done correctly. We had a mechanic shop at the dealer and I can't tell you all the crazy stories. _RandomFix

Johnthan, most late model Toyotas use this paper filter that goes inside the black filter holder which threads into the motor. I'm not sure if I clearly understand the question. Let me know. _Randomfix
@iceymalka2095 жыл бұрын
@@RANDOMFIX No you got it. I was just under the assumption if I went and bought a different filter (non-toyota) that maybe it wouldnt be the paper filter that goes into the filter holder. It will actually be the filter but thats not the case after shopping for filters the other day. Thanks for the reply. Toyota had that filter on tighter than I can ever imagine.

Okay, thank you. there are other upgraded filter from k/n but I would stick the oem style.

@@iceymalka209 The element IS the filter. There may be a kit for converting to a spin on style filter but I know of no such animal for a Prius.

You have oil on your wrest, at 3:17, drain plug tool didn’t work 😜
@RANDOMFIX5 жыл бұрын
Good catch😄 however the tool works great I would rather have a little oil my wrist compared to being burnt.
@JessePike56 жыл бұрын
Helpful. But dam that oil is like new. Must have used that electric motor like 50 percent of the time. Don't think you needed to change it.

Jesse, the oil on these Priuses never seem to get that bad but it is still due, this is my 3rd personal Prius don't exceed the 10k service interval. _RandomFix

You need to invest in a torque wrench, for both the oil plug and filter. For the oil drain plig I recommend a drain valve.
@RANDOMFIX6 жыл бұрын
Eugen, thanks for the feedback. I've worked on cars for 26 years now and the only time I use a torque wrench is when I'm putting in Spark plugs, valve covers, and wheels but never on oil changes because I use a small 1/4 ratchet. _Randomfix

RANDOMFIX, 1, this is a teaching video. People trying to learn from this don’t have 25 yrs experience. 2, w/o a torque wrench, you don’t know how tight everything is and likely don’t have the information or haven’t looked into it. Different gaskets require different torque. Not enough, it leaks and too much will compress too much, difficult to remove, damaging threads, etc. I use a torque wrench even when tightening my wheels lugs. Differentials, engine oil, transfer cases - Toyota has very different torque specs. Good job on the video! I like to install quick drain valves on my cars and drive Subarus, who’s engine oil filters are under the hood :)

What size torque wrenches? I have 2016 Prius. I am new to diy car maintenance.
@stevensevek61514 жыл бұрын
@@RANDOMFIX Still some viewers will find the torque specs useful if they don't have your experience. Oil filter cap = 18 ft.lbs Oil pan drainplug = 20 ft.lbs.

I swear the tighten those filters on purpose

Yeah I hear. I’ve had filters so tight that I send the customer back to dealership that last did the oil change as it wouldn’t come off with a breaker bar. Mechanics use power tools to save time but they actually waster lots of other peoples time as well.

On all of the OEM Toyota oil filter cartridge box, there are filter canister (and filter canister oil drain plug) torque spec; also, I think you may have bent you filter canister reverse safety clip useless (probably why you had a real hard time loosen the filter canister at first!) so you didn't mention to pry open just a bit on that reverse safety clip in order to loosen the filter canister for the first couple of turns... You are misleading some of the viewers to overlook that clip, Shame on you!
@RANDOMFIX5 жыл бұрын
Rick, thank you for you feedback, its impossible to cover every aspect. However I keep in mind going forward. Fyi, This Prius doesn't come a canister drain plug unlike my Camry.
@stevensevek61514 жыл бұрын
Toyota has the instructions right on the OEM oil filter box. Why don't they mention it? By the way the spin-on filters are spin-on canister filters.
