How to Change Reverse/Back Up Lights or Tail Lights 2001 Toyota Camry

In this video I upgraded the reverse lights on my 2001 Toyota Camry with LED Bulbs. There isn't cut out points to easily access the bulbs so I show viewers what needs to be done in order to gain access. The same process will be done for 1997-2001 Camry's across all trim levels.
If you needed to replace the whole tail light assembly on the trunk you would need to remove more of the fabric trunk cover and remove the bolts holding the tail light assembly in place.

The procedure is clear, but I get a headache with the camera work.

There is nothing wrong with the bulb... LED bulbs that have one prong. They are reverse polarity. If one does not work.. insert the bulb in so the prong is in the opposite side of the socket. So, if the bulb prong is in the right side of the socket and does not work, plug the bulb in so the bulb prong is in the left side of the socket. This will work with any one prong LED bulb application where a two prong incandescent factory bulb was installed as OEM. Hope this helps someone. Take care and happy motoring.

Wrong information in the beginning. Those taillights are only found in the 2000 and 2001 model years. The 4.5 gen. 97-99 have slimmer light design.

The instructions apply to the Gen 4 97-99 and Gen 4.5 00-01 all the same. Albeit the Gen 4 has slimmer taillights the internals and pretty much the same.

@@counkev true. I'm just nitpicking as a Camry enthusiast. Hey, what do you recommend using to remove the carpet retaining clips other than a trim removal tool that most people don't own?

The polarity was reversed. With LEDs it looks the same on both ends, but it actually matters which side you put the LEDs in. So, if it doesn't come on flip it over and put it back in.

any special tool needed to take out those plastic clips?

EvendimataE No special tool needed. I just used a flat head screwdriver to pry it out slightly at the side, then when I got it started a bit I got a pair of long needle nose pliers through the clip and slowly pried it out. Make sure to do this during the day when it is warm, or use a heat gun/hair dryer to warm up the clips in a circular motion to lower the chance that the clips will crack or break.

If you use a screwdriver and turn the centre screw anticlockwise, it pops up and you can pull out the plastic holder easily. You really need to practice using your camera first!

Hi Bram. These are not regular philips body screws. They are a hook type, like I showed in the video. Yes, the camera work was not the best, but I needed two hands and did not not have a camera person. I

Are back up bulbs are T10 ?

T15/921. T10s would work too they just won't be as bright as they are shorter than T15s and have less LEDs

So strange that you took the time to make this video and you explained it well and then you ruin the whole thing by waving the camera all over the place so it's hard to even see what you are talking about...so ultimately no regard whatsoever for people that are going to watch it. +naamail Thank you for your input, keep in mind that I do not have a camera crew or any budget, nor do I make money from KZbin. I had to hold the trunk down at the right angle so it wouldn't go all the way up plus the sun was shinning down so there was an immense amount of glare. This video was for instructional purposes, and was meant as ONLY a guide. There were no other videos up on how to do this, and it seem like a difficult task to do since there was no access panel. Are you telling me that you go nothing from this video? My main point was that you need to take of the entire trunk lining to access the bolts and reach behind the steel supports.
