My experience is I've had to hammer the shock bolts out. Of course these cases were trucks that the shocks were probably on them for 30, 40 years or more. I don't usually mess with re-using the old shock bolts unless the nuts turn freely and there's no damage to the bolts. All that road salt is steel's worst enemy. 10 years or so of that and they are toast.

Good stuff. I have done this many times to several different vehicles. A little bit of penetrating oil goes a long way. Put some on and let it sit for 15 min. Personally I use Marvel Mystery Oil. Use what you like. Some people use heat. On old Chevy's many times the front shocks have a vertical stud instead of the bolt and nut. Look when you buy shocks. If this is the case you may need a special tool to remove the nut on top of the stud. The nut is odd shaped. The tool is a few dollars. Better to look before you get back home and have to go back to the auto parts store. My auto parts store is 25 miles one way. Sucks when I forget something. Years ago I came across a set of HELWIG Bolt On Leaf Spring Helpers and a HELWIG rear torsion bar. Both kits were about 150 a piece. I got mine for unloading a trailer and sorting stuff. Made my 1/2 ton truck ride like 3/4 ton. I still have the springs on my current truck but the torsion bar.

Shocks and U-joints. You're taking me down memory lane when I owned my first car... '68 CJ-5, lifted. Since you have a lot of experience with older vehicles, I'd love any advice you have on dealing with frozen bolts. That '97 CRV from the painting video I shared with you, is a bear to deal with. We seem to break a bolt every time we do any work on the chassis/suspension; including replacing the struts last Fall. If lucky we can remove the fragment ourselves. But, its a Franklin or 2 when we can't and I have to take it down to Lamb's. That's a lot to spend for a $50 fix to a $500 car. Another good video. Keep'em coming. Thanks.

@@cheapwheels9828 You know it was about 15 years ago, but if I remember right a portion of it had sort of rust welded itself to the retaining bracket or the shock, or both. I think it was a combination of a punch, ball peen hammer (I know), vice grips, penetrating oil, and choice words that finally did it. I’m pretty sure the choice words were the most effective element though.
@MapleMarmite3 жыл бұрын
A good reminder for me that I need to do that job on my ‘89 F150 - noticed they are not looking so great. I’m also wondering about the rear leaf springs - she squashes down under a not particularly heavy load. Undecided on new/upgraded springs or a set of spring assisters like the Timbren brand ones. I find the heavy duty springs can make the ride rough when unloaded, though. Maybe you could do a vid on the leaf springs and how to tell when they are bad etc? Thanks 👍🏻
