I never fixed guitar strings before. Yesterday, went to guitar shop, that guy looked into my eye and said $45 + strings. That stare made think is there something I can save? Googled, found your video. Voila, I replaced E and A strings. You made me more confident today. Million thanks!

Really enjoying your videos, thank you. For very slippery E,B and G strings I lightly rub 220 grit sandpaper on approximately 3 cm of the string before tying the knot. This makes an enormous difference. Thank you again.

Great video, thanks for posting it. I go back and review it every time I re string. I have an Alvarez which has 12 holes at the bridge. ☹️ Despite your excellent advice I’ve managed to over wind & break the B string on my last 2 attempts . I’m obviously doing something wrong. I struggle to get it tuned and consequently I over tighten it. Still with some perseverance I eventually works. Thanks Kris.

I heard once that you shouldn't untighten all strings together to prevent having the bridge without any tension but I don't know if it's really that important.
@gabeallen4869
@gabeallen4869 3 жыл бұрын
It's not super important but it does help. If your bridge comes off, you're going to have to hold it down while tightening the low E string. There's also a chance you would put your bridge back on the wrong way.

I've never had an issue with that. I recently had a 12-string acoustic without strings for more than a year, put on a new set and it still plays beautifully. May depend on the guitar, but if it's a well built semi-modern guitar I think the concern is overblown.

I like your videos, seen them and used the tips you share with us before. But I find it very confusing, when you advice to wind both E strings to the inside on a tuning post and other four strings to the outside (which some guitarists find as an incorrect way), and then on a test ride we can clearly see that E strings are wind up to the outside, and other strings to the inside, as one would expect. Kind of strange. :)

@@ThomannsGuitarsBassesNo no no, that makes no sense. Winding the outside string inwards and the inside strings outwards obviously makes the strings more likely to touch and is opposite how everyone else I've ever seen does it. Everyone else winds the e strings toward the outside and the rest of the strings toward the inside. And at the end of the video, the guitar you are playing clearly has the strings wound that way, opposite to how you showed in the video. Seriously, WTF?

From my experience with nylon strings it takes a good 2 or 3 days of stretching the strings every few hours and retuning before you will find some stability. This video is a bit old. I think it's about time to promote the use of string ties as it is easier and neater. It eliminates the risk of string slip which can break the heart of the owner, especially if it is an expensive guitar. Also, it will expose the ornate bridge plate.

Hey, thanks a lot! Yes, there's a reason for this technique. You can see at 2:50 how close the E string is to the headstock (between the tuner post and the nut). If you wind the E strings up facing the outside of the headstock they will rub against the wood and scratch the finish after a time. Especially the wound low E string. //cheers, Kris

Are they breaking at the same spot on the string or randomly? If same spot such as nut or saddle I would look for maybe a worn spot that is eating at the string. If not it could just be bad luck with strings. Sometimes strings companies just have bad batches and they fail. That is a frustrating problem. I have been there.

My lower E string goes out of tune after I strum it only a couple times, what do I do?
@ThomannsGuitarsBasses
@ThomannsGuitarsBasses 4 ай бұрын
Do you mean "lower" position wise or tone wise? If it's the wound low E (which sits on top if you have the guitar in playing position) it should sattle in after a few tunings when you change the strings. The high E (the plastic string that sits lowest on the guitar) needs a long time to stay in tune after changing the strings. You usually have to tune it dozens of times until it finally stays in pitch, so that's normal. Please check on the bridge, where the string knots are. It could also be, that the string slowly slides through the knot and becomes loose. Cheers //Kris
