All I can say is "thank you." I went from grave concerns regarding 'codes' to actually changing out the battery. I didn't need to re-enter the panel information, but I did need to reset it by hitting "Off", then "Enter", and then "Auto". It all reset and then I started it through "Manual" to ensure it worked. All was perfect. Thanks for helping.

Just so you know, on a Generac, the battery is not charged from an alternator, when running, but rather from the Transfer Switch 120VAC through fuse F3 in the TS -- a trickle charge.
@glennarchdekin12792 жыл бұрын
Would you have a picture of this fuse in the transfer switch. I have a 22kw.
@mkowitz2 жыл бұрын
@@glennarchdekin1279 I do, but don't know how to attach it. Inside the (newer) Transfer Switches is the SACM (Smart Air Conditioner Module) that has three fuses, the rightmost one is labeled T1 (not F3, sorry). This is the one that feeds 120VAC to the battery charger in the controller in the generator. The SACM is black, plastic, with all of the control wires from the generator going to it, along with a Molex plug on the right-side, connecting various limit switches and sensor wires on the TS. Hope this helps you out.

In the generac, the battery charger is powered through the low voltage that is run to the controller, as the charger is integral to the controller. The Kohler controller is similar, with single low voltage. Cheaper to install (slightly) than similar sized Cummins or Briggs because fewer low voltage. However….if your charger goes bad in generac or Kohler….get ready to pay 800 to 1000 to replace the entire controller

#1 Unplug the molex connector under controller before touching battery. This disconnects the charger. You blow the charger, you replace the controller. #2 Always remove the negative battery cable from battery first. Then you can't short the positive to the enclosure, as it is no longer connected to the battery. When installing new battery, reverse procedure. #3 Opening the 2 pole breaker does nothing. It is only there to comply with codes and limit load on the generator output. Turn generator off from the controller and pull the fuse. I service many of these units yearly. Some models require dealer code to reset maintenance log. Look for a keypad hack on the web to get around knowing the dealer code.

First, when you tested the Generac, shouldn't the house main panel switch be off? and 2) can the battery be trickle charged and put back in or is it not worth it ant get a new one? Easiest way to tell is to check the voltage on the battery. If it is between 13.4 and 14, battery is good. If it is 14 or higher, change it. This is because as the battery ages, it builds up resistance inside and takes more voltage to keep it charged.

Get rid of it, if you ever really need it for any prolonged use it will probably break. I have a 22kw on my house it is about 6 months old and has no hours except for the weekly exercises. Well hurricane IDA hit and we ran it for 2-1/2 days and the gen-set has burned up we lost all the food in our refrigerators and are sleeping in 100-degree heat for the last 4 days. Last night I yanked that POS out and replaced it with a 20kw Trane unit and it runs like a Trane. I own an industrial supply house in New Orleans and we are a Generac distributor my brother-in-law purchased the same 22k unit from me and it has never been run. We installed it and it doesn't generate electricity. If you like a boat anchor in your yard to change the oil, air filter, and battery because you are bored buy a Generac, if you are looking for a generator that works, purchase a Kohler, Trane, or Onan and I have PLENTY of people who have this same problem but I don't want to make this comment any longer than it already is.
