HOW TO CHANGE THE BATTERY ON A BMW F20 F21 1 SERIES

Hello guys, I hope you are all well and safe in this horrid situation we are in. This video is about changing the battery over on the F20 F21 1 series. This video does not include the registration that you will need, if your fitting a new battery, it is just for the physical side of things. There are many ways to code the battery.

Do you know if this BMW has a second, auxiliary battery? I've changed the battery in mine but it seemed like there was still some electricity in the car after taking the battery out of it. For example, I didn't have to enter the codes for the radio after I installed the battery after charging.

Well done, Mr Woollard! It seems like BMWs have unnecessarily complicated battery locations as well as the removal and replacement compared with our MG3 and Seat Toledo, but it is at least consistent with other models in the range as well as newer Mercedes-Benz models.

Lloyd Vehicle Consulting thanks Joseph. I prefer the battery in the boot area, as it helps with the weight distribution, makes more room under the bonnet, and it’s also a cleaner area. I remember on my dads bmw e34 years back it was under the rear seat, so the boots pretty simple. Unfortunately these newer cars put a lot of strain the batteries these days with all their gizmos etc. This new tech, helps the car efficiently charge the battery up properly monitoring it all the time. The registering part is a pain thou, if you don’t have the tech, because it must be done or you could fry or explode the new battery lol :) thanks for watching as always Joseph. @@mattsbeamer, yes, my mother's E34 Touring also had the battery under the back seat. It was a pain.... As BMW have been doing this for years, there must be some logic to it, and of course old Minis also have a boot mounted battery, but I prefer them at the front for the sake of simplicity, and you don't have to take all the stuff out of the boot to change one. The battery on my Toledo is tiny as it has a 1.0 litre engine, but you are right that they are getting bigger in general. My mother's 2017 C Class has the battery in an even more inconvenient location, so clearly these premium brands think it is a good idea...

Lloyd Vehicle Consulting Apart from weight distribution I also believe it’s better in the back due to the heat in the engine bay. If it gets to warm it may decrease the life of the battery :)

Hey, it worked for me. I am still on my original battery (2012) I recommend buying a MXS5.0 CTEK charger. I would show it being charged on my car, but all the garages in my area lost their electricity, so usually carry the battery home. lol.

I wonder how your automatic gearbox operates in such low temperatures. When i start mine ZF8HP in around 0C it changes gears very poorly until getting warmed up.

Hey Matt! I never told my car when I recharged my old battery at the socket in the house. My battery is 11 years old. If you buy a new battery which is exactly the same it needs to be registered. If you buy a new battery with different characteristics, then it needs to be coded to the car. I hope that makes sense :) happy Christmas

Hey, yes if you put a new battery on, it needs to be registered. It is to let the car know a new battery is on the car, so it doesn’t charge up like it did the old battery :) I left a link in a description box of a video, of someone using a Carly to register it. If you have a different type of battery then it needs to be coded to the car.

Hey, the BMW radios don't need coding like in the old days. You will loose things like the settings, clock, presets etc. But it will all work again :) One thing I would do is what I discovered recently, is to let the car go into sleep modes before disconnecting the battery. I did do a video the other week, on that :)
