Aside from your generosity in sharing your expertise, I get a lovely warm feeling of complacency in knowing that I have, in my own small way, deprived a global corporate giant of my business. This is an incredibly helpful video and to a non-engineer like me, having changed a battery that was not designed to be changed, you made it simple and easy to follow. From one proud Englishman to another - Thank you; you are a gentleman.

During an extensive period of inactivity, I tried to restart my toothbrush - only to find out that nothing I knew to try helped. When I found this instructional video on how to dismantle relevant parts of the machine, I managed to replace the battery, recharge it and eventually get the toothbrush working again. I guess it needed a good contact with the soldered battery tabs, because only the second or third attempt was successful. But the principle on the video is sound and helpful. Thanks.

Very, very helpful. Picked up a battery on line which came to £4 with delivery, installed it no problems following along with the video. Thanks a lot!

nobbynoel - Thanks very much for posting this video. I've now replaced the battery with a 2700mAH Sanyo battery. Mine was A size, about 50mm length. I broke off one of the tags on the battery by accident but was eventually able to get some solder onto the battery terminal and solder the toothbrush tag onto it. The whole job was a bit messy but it's quite simple following your instructions.

My wife thought I was mad bothering to replace battery on old electric tooth brush. I was actually going to buy a new one but stumbled across this you tube session on how to change battery. The good news is the battery is changed and on charge. Yet to find out if this will fix problem and show my wife that its all worth while. Great video and very impressed how well explained! Thanks!!!!!

Great video, I have just disasembled and reassembled my toothbrush without a hitch and have ordered a replacement battery which I will fit as soon as it arrives. I have already started posting negative reviews of oral-b's brushes on various review sites. Maybe if enough people do it they will take notice and design a tooth brush that you do not have to throw away once the battery has worn out.

Thank you so much for this video. I bought a replacement battery on line and after spending a few minutes trying to get the base off the toothbrush without success, I googled for some advice and found this video. It took far less time than it would have otherwise. Fantastic. [Adelaide, South Australia]

Fantastic video, clear and easy to follow. However taking my Oral B toothbrush apart, actually had a longer battery(Full length AA battery size). However with no external markings on the battery, I still replaced with a 4/5 size one that you mention in your video. Toothbrush is working lovely. Cheers for such a helpful video.

Thanks for the video, changed battery for one the same size, works perfectly. Again, didn't solder just folded the tags for contact with the partial tag left in.

Ha ha! I did it! Thank you! Saving me over £100. Left a comment on your blog about the triangle on the charger not being robust enough to remove the bottom of the unit (it kept turning wearing the triangle away) couldn't work out how to get it off. Bit of research and melted a Bic biro pressing it against the triangle shaped recess. Left it to cool and it worked perfectly but only for one use.... Didn't bother to use solder.

Helpful guide. I'd only add that: 1. Soldering isn't necessary - you can just fold the solder tags on the new battery to maintain conduction and 2. With enough twisting to and fro the base will come off without mangling with a screwdriver.

Excellent tutorial!! I didn't get the same battery, but got a 1,2v 2500Mah (from televersum NL), which was slightly thinner than the original. But the spring is holding it just fine. My toothbrush is working fine again :)

Great video. Just did replace the battery based on it. Couple comments: 1) you can easily fit into the space a larger battery, I used 2700 mah 2) as somebody mentioned you do not need to solder the connectors, you can just fold them in such way that they touch the existing connectors. 3). When I finished and put the brush into a stand, the display was totally blank, so I was wondering if I put the battery the wrong way or messed up a brush. Don't panic, let it stand for a little while, the display will come to life after maybe 5-10 minutes.

Great guide Noel! Thanks for posting it :) It might be worth adding in the description that some Oral-B brushes that look identical to yours externally such as my 9900 Triumph have a slightly different battery size inside. Mine has a 50mm length battery (A size as opposed to 4/5A size (43mm length). I'm guessing that the spring inside will allow me to put the 4/5A but it would be worth people checking their existing battery before replacing. Can get A size from the same place you listed.

In response to everybody asking about battery specs... The only important thing is to get the voltage right. A high a capacity (mAh) as possible is beneficial, and the same size and type helps to make it fit right. The mAh rating is literally just how long the battery will last. Get the highest rating you can find. NiMh cells won't hold their charge for as long as NiCd ones if you don't use it regularly. The voltage is determined by the number of battery cells. Each cell is 1.2V

I simply replaced it by a standard Sanyo Eneloop (typ. 2000mAh, w/ the newest gen. up to 1500 cycles) and soldered it. Fits and works perfect, w/ the benefit of much less self-discharging than a standard NiMH accu.

Thanks. I would have probably destroyed the toothbrush trying to disassemble it if wasn't for this video. I used a plain AA NiMH rechargeable battery since I already have a whole set of those lying around and it fits. I had to cut the spring to accommodate the longer battery.

Thanks for this very clear video, but it isn't like changing a simple battery, it's quite a bit more complex. So, why do they provide the key to open it if it isn't possible to change it simply with the key and a screwdriver?

One down, one to go! I actually found it easier to remove the lcd, de-solder the battery and replace it that way, probably because I don't have the best tool kit though...

I thought this a better approach than unsoldering the tags from the board as shown in another vid. Did the 2000mAh battery perform much the same as the original? I seem to find that when replacing NiMHs, they only seem to come in larger sizes that tend to register as "low" sooner than lower capacities do. Like the input from junior...

Great work! I just have one question, how did u find out the specification of the battery? I mean you can only know the size of the original battery, but not the voltage and the mAh. How did u find that out? I am asking because that i have opend my braun shaver and the battery inside is the exact same size as one R6 (AA) battery. But i dont know anything about the voltage or mAh of tha battery. Thanks!

The battery I got from a local store is 2700mah and of the same size. I used this to replace the old battery, unfortunately it does not work. The first time I put the battery, LCD was flashing to be charged....once I charged for a while and pressed the button to see for the vibration, it does not and battery flashing is gone. Nobby do you have an idea what could have gone wrong. Thank you.

with a little bit of tweaking i can fix a 2.4v battery into a 1.2v oral b toothbrush. does this mean that i will get a higher motor speed thus better cleaning?
@nobblynoel

Please don't do that. You will kill the electronic control for the motor and it could burn your house down..LOL

Hi, I have unmounted my oral b. And I have tested my battery and it seems a Voltage of 1.38V... so I feel that the problem is the toothbrush, isn't it??

The LCD is held in by a very small allen key screw. iT is so small that a normal allen key set would not be small enough. I decided that other people. like me, would not have a 1mm allen key and it would be easier just to leave the LCD in place and solder onto the original tags..

Your battery is dieing from overcharging; After fully charging the battery the 1st than you should plug your toothbrush or driill battery into a wall timer than set the wall timer to turn on for minies a day.

How would they sell any of them if they would last for 20 years? So using cheap components will not only make the unit fail earlier but even during warranty. Not good. So the solution is to use irreplaceable nimh batteries with shorter lifespan than LI-ION.

I love my toothbrush, but for goodness sake it seems harder than it looks, first removing the battery! I know if not careful something could be broken and then, I'm saying unmentionable words. I'm female and pretty competent on most things, not sure about this. Also, what type of battery is this anyway?

Damn, my Triumph toothbrush is having the same battery issue! Braun, what the hell is wrong with your engineers? Why can't u just design a toothbrush so that you can just simply open the bottom cover, and replace an AA battery? you can easily get a 2700mAh now!
