By loosening the frame mounted housing 3-4 turns BEFORE draining bowl, it will allow a check valve to close to prevent siphoning from the tank. Open drain valve and have a cup of coffee, or a brewskie depending on time of day, and you will have less of a mess. Just my 2 cents worth but other than that a very good video with excellent instructions.

I have seen adapters for sale that allow you to convert some chevy diesel trucks oil filters over to a CAT filter.

Using an 1 ½ inch wrench to remove the cap on the lower filter can cause the cap to break. I've had a couple of caps snap the bottom right out of them. In fact my Ford dealer stocks them because it happens quite often. I've started using a strap wrench with about a ½" wide strap around the body of the cap to install and remove the cap. It works great and could save you $30 bucks at the Ford dealer for a new one. If you don't have one they are common and cheap. I think I got mine at Ace hardware.

I agree. I had a garage install a new fuel filter once and they didn't get it back on correctly, it sucked air into the system and cranked on it until the battery died.

I failed to purge completely and my truck died after a few minutes. I re-purged and it then started and runs great with no issues, though I did have to clear the code it set due to the low pressure. What concerns me is that I attempted to crank it a couple times before figuring this out, is it likely that I damaged anything?

No I doubt you damaged anything. When I had a garage, change my filter they used a cheap part and it sucked air, killed my battery, but once I put a motocraft filter on everything was fine.

Since it sprung a leak coming home from camping this weekend, and I had to leave my vehicle on a nearby military base, which was nice and have a friend come get us. uhfdude3 make sure you get a good filter. I bought a cheap one at a local part store and it wouldn’t seal. Sucked air into the lines, caused a lot of cussing.

small, flat blade screwdriver is what I use. Just changed again yesterday. My truck now has 175k miles and still going strong!

Any reason why I can't put the fuel that drains from the bottom housing right back into the tank? Otherwise, how do you dispose of all that fuel?

Great detailed video!! I was afraid of changing my fuel filters coming from a 2004 Duramax. That thing was a nightmare to get re-primed. This looks super easy. Other than a big socket, no special tools needed. I’m doing mine tomorrow!!!
