Great video! FYI for RWD GS350 (2013) the oil filter is on the passenger side (not on the drivers side as shown in the video) and the oil filter is different as well (Part # 04152-YZZA3). The A1 filter that is used in the 4WD is a little longer and comes with the drain plug compared to the A1 filter that doesnt have a drain plug. Hope this helps for others with the RWD car.
@DIYDanCars8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The car in the video is an AWD version. The dealer told me the oil filters are interchangeable between RWD and AWD cars. I don't know how true that is so do your own due diligence on the matter, but there does seem to be some creditability in the statement. If you look at all the aftermarket oil filters that are available they don’t offer a specific AWD or a RWD filter, but rather a one part number fits both.
@GREATTECH16 жыл бұрын
The drain plug on the filter doesn't make much sense, and is MESSY, as we can see. I have the rear wheel drive version, and my cover doesn't have a drain plug..As stated, my oil filter is on the passenger side, so I was a bit confused when I saw this video. Otherwise, great instruction video...

Thanks for the video! I bought my wife the same car (dark grayish metallic, same interior color flaxen), and I am doing an oil change this weekend. One good thing you reminded me of that I need that oil filter wrench or a good quality one because I do believe this car was serviced by Lexus and they usually tighten that thing down ass tight. Toyota did the same on my Sequoia (among other things, like bending the metal removable plate under engine) so for that reason I have been doing all the maintenance. I have a cheapy cast tool but I have read some places that if that filter cap is really tight, you can split the tool in half. So I bought a billet aluminum one so I hope that does the trick.
@DIYDanCars8 жыл бұрын
No problem! Don't forget to check out my other video on how to service the rear differential -- its easier than a oil change! Yea, I have had similar problems to when the dealer works on my car. When the dealer did an oil change on my Dodge Ram they forgot to tighten the oil filter, boy did that make a mess! As the saying goes if you want it done right you gotta do it yourself!

For anyone who had a over tighter oil filter like me, I recommend the Motiv X Tools MX2320. I broke 3 of the cheap ones from auto zone/pepboys. They all snapped in half. The motiv one was able to break loose the filter. Definitely satisfying when you do it yourself and everything goes as planned.

I like that Toyota/Lexus actually thought about the oil filter housing and made a special tool with keyed 'teeth' so that you *have* to use it to remove the housing. I remember that my old Mazda 3's housing could be removed with a big adjustable wrench, which would often stress the plastic and cause it to crack and lead to catastrophic failure. I'm about to do my first oil change this weekend on my '19 IS350 AWD. I just need the filter (along with included o rings and the plastic spout tool), 7L of Toyota 0W-20 and a new drain bolt washer?

Did you use a regular jack or a low profile ? Should I get a 2 or 3 ton jack? I’m not sure to get a long reach low profile jack or regular?
@DIYDanCars7 ай бұрын
If it were me, I would purchase a low profile jack in case you purchase car in the future that sits low to the ground. As for the tonnage, that depends on how heavy your cars are. If you want to future proof yourself get the 3 ton jack.
@hallhouse50985 жыл бұрын
Being a mobile mechanic I cannot afford mistakes in the driveway so when I drain the oil I let the car off the jack to my low profile drain pan which levels the car and helps to drain more oil than when jacked up. I also do not put the filter plastic covering on until I refill the oil, start the engine and check to make sure the filter housing is not leaking. Then I button it all back up and recheck the dipstick and make any corrections. This is a very good video though. I also use a battery powered angle driver to remove the panel bolts, much faster than a ratchet and less fatigue.

Dan....have you thought about the “Race Ramos”. Drive on fairly simple to use and tilts the vehicle back about 15-2 degrees. I use them and not only saves jacking but allows more of a tilt and depending on where the drain pan bolt is, usually allows more of the old dirty oil to drain out. I want to say around $40-50 depending on vendor and what weight capacity you need. I have a SUV and car so the weight capacity of the SUV is well above the actual weight of either vehicle. Just a thought....... Your videos and seeing how reasonably simple some things can be makes me want to get a GS350.

After completing the oil and filter change, a couple of thoughts. I bought a 10 pack of oem filters. It didnt come with the extra little spout and small rubber O ring to drain off filter housing. I just carefully and slowly turned the whole housing and it drained neatly into my pan. Wiped down the excess oil off of the housing before install of the filter cartridge and large O ring, no problem. But the weird thing was how that housing re-installs. The filter element is spring loaded so it was difficult to get the threads started and when turning it it doesnt seem to get tighter as you turn it it just bottoms out and stops. No leaks. Is this the way it is supposed to be?
