How to change Toyota RAV4 oil and filter 2013-2018. This is how to change the engine oil and oil filter in your 2013-2018 Toyota Rav4. The process is the same for all 2.5L (gasoline) Rav4's (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018).
It's a straight forward process. Very easy to DO IT YOURSELF!
Filters I used: amzn.to/2ybNrw7
Oil for this project: amzn.to/2sOxUx0
It's a bit lengthy, but I break down in detail the how's and why's in regard to the way that I like to get the RAV4's oil changed.
For this video I chose to use Mobil 1's 0W-20 synthetic engine oil. I'm not brand loyal (it's what was on sale).
Please PLEASE, do the responsible thing and dispose of old motor oil in accordance with your local recycling/waste programs, laws, etc.
If you think there is something I should change or that you would like to have clarified, please let me know in the comments below.
Thanks for your time. Get your hands dirty, be safe and enjoy the process!
This video was shot using:
Camera used - amzn.to/2sR3CcQ
My go-to zoom lens - amzn.to/2t3sXjk
The Wiiiide lens - amzn.to/2sNCIme
My favorite photography lens - amzn.to/2JtbYSm
My camera bag - amzn.to/2MgKPji
The tripod for in the garage - amzn.to/2y59QLq
The tripod for on the run - amzn.to/2sQsrpn
The head for the on the run tripod - amzn.to/2sPlhBE
The shotgun mic - amzn.to/2xZ0K2J
My voiceover mic - amzn.to/2JCqpiU
Voice recorder - amzn.to/2Jt6XcG
Polarizer Filter - amzn.to/2xY5K7E

I believe most cars just use a whole filter cartridge that contains all these parts. Toyota made it so that you only replace the filter itself and some O rings. Perhaps it's to reduce waste. But it really complicates it.

I bought a 2018 Rav 4 from the stealership three months ago. A few days ago I changed the oil. They say every 10,000 miles. Forget that. I do 5,000. It's not like it's their problem once it leaves the lot. Anyway, when I got the cartridge off and the filter, the bottom o-ring was missing. And these guys are supposed to be the experts? I skipped the free oil change due to Covid 19, but I won't be going back, regardless.

This is by far, the best oil change instruction for this series Rav4 on KZbin! My 2014 is a daily driver and I commute about 500 miles per week, so I do a lot of oil changes on it, I come back and watch this video prior to heading out to the garage every time! It serves as great instruction and reminds me of the order of operations and the torque values. Many thanks for sharing this one Mike!

Great video. I've watch about 15 video's and this was the only video showing Torque specification. I purchased the Haynes manual and I was confused on oil torques, clearly a misprint, oil filter plug 110 ft pounds. You state 9, I'm guessing the book should have stated 10, not 110. So I am very thankful for your video.

Excellent video. I just finished my first oil & filter change on my '014 RAV4. This was by far the best how-to video I found. Unlike the demise of points & condensers and carburetors, I'm not a fan of that of the old canister-type filter. But the extra hassle with the cartridge & housing design is not a huge deal. Anyway, the other videos are probably okay but the guys mumble and use ambiguous phrases like "this thing." This one is a keeper. Thank you very much.

A couple of other tips are it's always better to do a hot oil change to get out most of that residual oil and if you're really meticulous about the internal parts of your motor, it would never hurt to run a litre of cheap oil through again to flush out the residual oil in the pan especially if you're propping your car up on an angle, like he did. And to be even more meticulous some people have been known to use magnetic drain plugs to catch the metal parts throughout your oil. And this also extends the life of your oil filter dramatically and also helps in the first few engine flushes of a brand new motor.

My oil change went exactly like your video said including draining the entire oil jug . Even though it's my first time on a RAV4 it's still went easier than both of my Ford trucks 03 and 13, that like to piss oil everywhere on a oil change. I have a 2010 Corolla so the paper cartridge is not new to me . Thanks

Great video. Yes, you should wait 10-20 minutes for the oil to make its way down to the pan and get a good deep stick reading. This goes back decades, still applies today. even though the oil being used has the viscosity of water, the engine tolerances are much tighter. And as others have mentioned, do open your garage when you turn the engine on.

I was going to do that myself. Then I read about how some folks have had problems with the aluminum filter caps as well. I decided to get the original plastic oil filter cap. Either one is fine. It's only a problem if you let someone else change your oil and/or if you don't torque the parts to the specified torque. Also some folks use the wrong wrench. They use one that is meant for the smaller oil filter cap on a Corolla which will fit the top but is not the correct tool. Also use a socket that fits the hex head on the oil filter cap wrench instead of just using a ⅜ inch extension to remove the housing.

Quick question: how long do you need to run the engine after adding new oil and before checking the level? I love your video by the way and I've watched it through probably 8 times so far in preparation for doing my first oil change.

BTW I notice that your oil filter cap wrench is made for the 1.8 liter engine and the slots on it do not engage with the tabs on the oil filter cap. Next time you do an oil change take a close look when your oil filter cap is off and you'll see what I mean. I know it still works even though it's only part way on. That's because both of the two different caps are 64 mm and 14 flutes at the top but if you had the correct wrench it would fit even better. The two different sizes can be seen here... (You want the larger one that fits all engines 2.0 liters and up including 4, 6 or 8 cylinders) www.amazon.com/Motivx-Tools-Filter-Wrench-Vehicles/dp/B078RHZP9M/ref=sr_1_12?dchild=1&keywords=motivx+oil+filter+wrench&qid=1601674153&sr=8-12

Ouuut= Canadian? That silver oil filter plug screwed out fairly easy for me, but that little plastic drain tube (the thing adapter you called it) that you snapped in, didn't snap in for me! When I pushed up to try and snap it in, it wouldn't snap in and hold! A lot of oil came gushing out (way more than what your video showed) on my palm and all the way down my arm... a real mess it caused! Why Toyota developed this type of filter baffles me! Most likely in Toyota's mind, people who experienced what I did, would probably take their vehicle to the dealership for their entire vehicles life oil changes! By the time I got done, I had a garbage can full of oil soaked paper towels!

Sorry to hear about the mess! I've had a couple of those plastic filter drain "adapters" not go in correctly and you're right... It's a pain in the ass!
