Having tried both ways of changing the insert, I think the only safe way of doing it is to remove the fasteners. Applying far too much pressure around a potentially razor sharp inset otherwise. Would be nice it you guys could include a little cheap T8 driver with the kit. Other than how the inserts change, it's a real sleek piece of kit.

With you there. Had to remove the screws as well. Wish I'd researched a bit more before buying. Also wish I went with the brushed titanium instead of black. But I'm happy to have such a small multitool that can take utility blades though, so for now I'll try running it in my EDC.

Did you slice your finger to? If I didn’t have superglue? I’d be going to the hospital for about 6 stitches. I’m sorry, but this is bullshit. I have the tag gear version and it smokes this little piece of junk. This is very dangerous. I don’t recommend anybody buy one of these. I guarantee you you will cut yourself 100% and more than once. You would not believe what just happened as I’m typing this up my tattoo artist comes walking up to me, and he’s bleeding everywhere he tried to take the blade out. Boy get ready for some lawsuits. Type of warning and put it inside the box. If you’re going to make something that doesn’t work good or easy to change, you really gotta bust your ass to open this little thing up. No way I’ll throw it in the fucking garbage.

Changing blade very frustrating. I think the minute profile for changing is not done properly. It is also very dangerous and risk of cutting yourself twisting and pushing with razor sharp blade.

*****TIP****So I struggled with getting the blade out and pretty much resorted to removing the fasteners. Used NYOGEL 760G today to lube the insides and viola- blades slide in and out easily. Hope this helps.

Had mine for a couple hours and i am very pleased. The design is simple and seems like it would be reliable because of this. Took me a bit of practice and changing blade is no problem. The comments here complaining about that shouldve used the included safety inserts to practice with a few times. Its really not that hard at all once you figure it out.

I received mine today after anxiously waiting for it. I own the first generation also, but I like the new design with a deployment button and the pocket clip. Unfortunately I am having a very difficult time trying to remove the inserts/ replacement baldes. My left thumb fingerprints are gone and my fingernail is already separating from my skin from trying this. I wish the deployment mechanism was smoother .

The most common thing we find for folks having issues/difficulties opening up the tool for swapping inserts is they are "push down" on the button instead of using the edge of the button to slide it up onto the internal ramp. Feel free to send a quick clip of how you are doing it over at contact@bigidesign.com and we will be happy to help see what's going on as well.

Just received mine today. Very frustrated. I can't resort to 3rd option...I mean who has a T6 torx bit? The slide doesn't slide that well. and just for the life of me can't get the insert out! Mine also looks different from the one on the video. The closer I look at this TPT it looks used...Ugh just lost $80. Highly recommend not to buy this.

I prefer the last method myself. Too easy to cut yourself when you have a utility blade in doing the other two. Kind of a weird design chocie imo. "Ok for safety reasons, stick the blade fully out, grab it with your fingers, hope it's not too rusty, now twist and crank it until you can pop the Titanium apart enough to get it out."

I’m sorry but this is a deal breaker design flaw for a utility knife. This is the perfect utility knife in every other aspect. But it has to be safe to change out the blades. I want to like it so badly because it fits my needs in every other way. I hope you can fix this in the next design and you will 100% have me back as a customer.

Sorry im just not seeing your comment! We designed it this way so that it does not easy come out. it is definitely one of those things that once you find the best way to do it for you it is very simple. I can't do it just by pushing it. However, what I wound up doing is removing the back top fastener permanently. Only then can I push it wide enough to get the blades in and out easily. It still seems secure without that fastener, slides back and forth like normal

Three things you won't know till you have it in your hand: 1. The blade change technique is horrible (and dangerous). I can barely type right now my thumbs hurt so bad from trying to get the blade out. I don't want to have to disassemble the thing either because apparently-according to other comments-there is a tiny pin that you can lose from the belt clip. 2. The action is NOT smooth (on the black one anyway). The blade doesn't "fall" into it's detents. Probably because you're pushing down on the button and are "passing" the detents as you're unable to feel them unless there is adequate back pressure. You have to vary how much pressure you push with for it to find the detents. Oh, and the "full out" detent? It's even more finicky because you can push it past that detent, and must, to change the blade. Which, reminder, I have not been able to do. I'm an aeronautical engineer… a failed aeronautical engineer. This tool has stolen my dignity. 3. The ergonomics, especially when deploying, require you to cramp your hand on the spline. It works. But it's uncomfortable af. TL;DR: This does NOT feel like a $90+ dollar tool. It _looks_ like one. But I bought this to use it. Not stare at it. (Well, ok, I _was_ planning to stare at it quite a bit because I'm lonely.)

Ok, so I Love this 1.2 oz lightweight, compact titanium design, but Hate the dangerous blade changing technique. Love/Hate. I own 2 of these. Here is what finally worked... you have to REALLY twist the blade to open up the body halves, and to clear the catch internally, allowing the blade to slide out (and back in). Suggest holding the blade with a rag or paper towel (double or quadruple folded) to lower risk of a nasty cut while twisting and pulling a razor blade, or wear some fitted gloves. If you choose to disassemble, watch closely, maybe work over a tray or uncluttered rubber work mat. The pocket clip uses a tiny diameter pin that is not retained, and is easy to drop and lose in carpet, and the slide is not bidirectional (not symmetrical). It's fiddly and time consuming to replace the blade by opening up with Torx T6. Use quality T6 bits (e.g. Wiha), else you'll strip the T6 heads. Utility blades are not stainless. If you get the blade dirty, and allow it to corrode while closed, it'll freeze this mechanism shut, and tight, necessitating the disassembly. Ask me how I know... Clearly there are opportunities to make the the next design version much safer and less infuriating, which would pose much less risk for Big I Design and your user-base.

I just recieved mine today. I got it in black. What is the coating on it? Thanks for the video. I had trouble removing the insert but was able to get it eventually after watching this a few times. I used the first method. Do you recommend any oil for the slide mechanism? I was thinking about putting some nano oil on it. Also I wish the pocket clip was on the other side. I have to flip it in my hand to use it.
@bigidesign
@bigidesign 5 жыл бұрын
Shaun Harrison - The black coating is a DLC coating similar to how high-end watches are coated. You can use a high quality clear silicone like NyoGel or a white lithium grease on the mechanism track if you’d like also, glad the video helped out!
